    📚Description: Today we are reviewing Gibson USAs latest Slash Collection guitar. This is based on one of Slash's most heavily toured guitars - Jessica. It is a late 80s Les Paul standard so Gibson paid tribute to some of their quirky specs like a plain 3-piece top. At the same price as the 2 piece flame top models, it is hard to justify this model unless you're a big fan of this particular guitar. It certainly isn't for everyone, but I enjoyed it! There aren't many "plain top" Les Paul Standard options produced today

      7:05 I'm pretty sure the metal alloy used in the ABR-1 is different than the Nashville bridge.
      Additionally, the material makeup of the bridge saddles are also different between the two bridges.
      And yes, the 3-Piece top is indeed an acquired taste. 😉

    THIS is the LP that first made me want an LP when I was a kid. Slash just astounded me. I've been wanting them to make one for years, so I'm exactly the demo they're looking for and I'm thrilled it exists. Now I just need to save up for another LP. Shouldn't take me more than ten or twenty years.

    Crazy days when people are willing to pay a premium for something we all considered the worst thing about the Les Pauls from that era. Why anyone would choose one of these over a regular Standard with a two piece figured top is cray cray. If you like Slash, buy one of his AAA top models for the same price and if you like the 80's vibe, buy a used original for the same or less. They're great players for sure.

    • @Trog

      People are asking A LOT for late 80s standards nowadays.

    • @Darth.Shredder
      @Darth.Shredder Pƙed 28 dny +8

      @@Trog Fair enough... Some people may be asking a lot ... but anyone who pays more than $3200 for a plain-jane, late 80's Standard isn't looking very hard. Even if they did pay more, the real thing is so much better than a no frills, quasi signature model.

    • @Aspkkr
      @Aspkkr Pƙed 28 dny +4

      What if you already have the flame top Slash guitars? It's not a matter of choosing this above a nicer top Les Paul, its a matter of wanting this to add to your collection. Doesnt need to be a choice. I have quilt tops, flame tops, one piece tops and so on. It's what I like. Also $3200 these days isnt a lot for a guitar, I saw an Ibanez that was 5 times that much. Customs are all more than that. $3000 is the price for the USA range, not even high end guitars.

    • @guttedEwok01
      @guttedEwok01 Pƙed 28 dny +5

      I can’t stand flame maple tops, just too gaudy and loud. I wish they would make more guitars with plain maple tops. Each to their own but I much rather prefer very plain wood grain with very subtle bursts.

    • @Darth.Shredder
      @Darth.Shredder Pƙed 28 dny +3

      @@Aspkkr Yes, it is about a choice, otherwise Gibson is solely relying on Slash fanboys and collectors to be repeat buyers. Most players will buy one or the other. I never said $3200 was too expensive or that people shouldn't spend that much on a guitar... i said there were much better options for $3200 and less. That applies to anyone, not just Slash fanboys. If you want to put on a tophat and pretend you're in the jungle, that's your prerogative.

  • @paulketchupwitheverything767

    I like the three piece top and the lack of flame. I think it makes it more of a 'working' instrument and less ornamental and less for show. Matched tops can be a bit formulaic. It also makes me think of players in the past who stripped a single color finish that they didn't like to reveal the maple underneath.

    • @Darth.Shredder
      @Darth.Shredder Pƙed 28 dny +2

      The only problem with that logic is that if it's a "working" instrument it shouldn't cost the same as the ornamental one "for show". Three piece tops were used in the 80's to save money - it was never a positive attribute. It's not $3200 because it has a 3 piece top, it's $3200 because it has Slash's name on it. The Les Paul "Classic" would make more sense as a "working" instrument... it comes in the same finish and costs $1,000 less... plus it has the 2 piece top and fret nibs that cost more to produce. In essence, you're paying more for less with the Jessica.

    I'm not a fan of the 3-piece top that Gibson puts out with any of their LP's. I'm sure it's used in the Studio and other solid finishes. But for a burst it just falls short of my expectations in a wood-grain top. I won't complain about the frets without the "nibs". The binding over the frets, to me, looks like they are cutting corners. That Slash model actually sounds great with those pickups. Even though the finish is more like a lemon burst I'd be completely happy with it. Great video, Trog. Well done!

    On this guitar is the bridge grounded? I don't see the grounding lead hole in the electronics bay. I say this because virtually all modern pickup manufacturers show wiring diagrams that include the bridge ground connection.

    • @Darth.Shredder
      @Darth.Shredder Pƙed 28 dny +3

      Why not just buy the Classic in honeyburst? It's the same finish, it's a plain top, it's weight relieved and has a natural back for $1,000 less than the Jessica. There's absolutely no advantage to having a 3 piece top. It was a cost cutting measure for Gibson back then. When they went to 2 piece tops it was considered an upgrade.

    • @PaulCooksStuff
      @PaulCooksStuff Pƙed 28 dny

      @@charlesbolton8471 I don't even know who the first LP Sig would be. A couple of articles suggest Joe Perry 96 and Ace Frehley 97. Custom shop clones rather than full USA production. If we apply the same Austin criteria (every model, colour, aging) the models and numbers for Les himself quickly proliferate (standard, custom, junior, special, sg, deluxe, pro, recording, the paul, studio etc), but whether its higher than Slash by 96, I don't know all the variants. Maybe Austin will chip in.
      Though funnily enough I've just learned Hetfield has 80+ signature ESP's. Maybe Gibson/Slash want that record. Should be there by mid 2026 at this rate.

    Trogly is massively improving as a guitar player. He is well on his way to having good feel, rhythm, touch and tone. His improvement in the past year is remarkable. He could be a guitar hero in a few years.
