Thanks for the video Scotty!
I have question for you about and old car!
Thank you. Great information. Scotty since you don’t favor those Interstate what type do you favor?
Thank you I truly love all your information on vehicles.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Scotty, where can I buy the battery and alternator check?
Scotty, should I buy a 2021 4Runner former rental that is certified w/55k miles or a 2018 Lexus RX350 w/38k miles? The 4Runner seems way more useful.
Battery, huh? A dishonest mechanic might've taken advantage of the owner because of their assessment, so thanks for being a stand-up man Scotty.
Scotty always tells it like it is. 😉 Been his sub for years and years Im also a shade tree mechanic also sold high end luxury cars for 20 years. Loved our service department and the guys that worked there! 😉
This is exactly what I was thinking!
Seen it a thousand times ☝🏻
Had the battery in my 2013 Altima replaced last week and noticed an immediate improvement in the performance of the transmission. I figured that during the time that power was disconnected, the transmission control module reset to the original specs.
U r right 👍🏻
That's why we need to know at least basic things about our car.
I had a check engine light. It has MAP error, high idle sensor error and others. Different check engine light every other day. Find out battery was corroded so bad, after I cleaned it’s alright. Right time Scotty!
Scotty's advice is always worth his weight in gold and then some. Thanks for your wisdom helping people every day!👍🏻
Interstate batteries are garbage. That's been my experience. Been running DEKA batteries for a few decades with zero issues.
This happens all the time in my shop.
A lot of modern cars have problems caused by a weak battery. In any car that always the first thing I check before anything else because of the battery is dead it can screw up almost anything.
I have a Honda Accord too and the battery died within 3 years. When I went in to replace it, I saw the smaller battery on mine too. After doing some research, I found out you can actually put in a bigger battery (and the platform supports it too). I went with a bigger battery and am happy with it.
Scotty is one of those people that should live forever. Anyone who WANTS to continue to learn and grow and better themselves and who can admit they don't know everything should be given the choice to live forever. Forever mastering everything there is to "master".
hell live on yt indefinitely 🙏
@@jonnyz5772 Truth!
Another reason not to think about automatic transmission. A bad battery will make it run incorrect.
I must say that scotty is so much happier since he left Houston the dual homestead stay is certainly agreeing with him, a happy scotty means we get plenty of good content
I have been watching & learning valuable car information from this guy for years now & it has served me well. Scotty is the guru of cars & he is so honest & forthcoming that he is the rose among thorns in his industry. Thanks for your honesty, integrity & sharing of knowledge, Scotty Kilmer. All the best in 2023.
I bought a Launch scan tool and it works great for me. Already paid for itself by keeping me out of the shop.
Always appreciate your great content !
How much was it? Where did you buy it from?
Following and I'm interested too.
The first tool he uses to scan the car is a $5k-ish Thinktool Platinum S20, the 2nd he uses to reset it appears to be a Launch Millennium Max, couldn't find a price for it.
@@golfnz34me if you find it pls post a link for us thanks
@@bille199 Scotty has made several videos where he uses a different scan tool to reset the codes. I remember one video about the alternator and battery where he said the same thing about insuring you reset something if you buy a new battery in a newer video. Is it just the (all) error codes on the computer or is there a specific code or error that must be rest to insure the alternator does not over charge a new battery?
Exactly I have a 2010 Dodge journey SXT bought it before I found this channel, the battery will make you think everything is wrong... Just replaced the battery and issues go away , bought a battery tester just because of Scotty 4 years ago and seems to be the culprit every time 290K and still my everyday driver...
Literally having the same issue with my 2019 honda civic sport for the past month driving me up the wall! You're a life saver scotty!
What issue exactly because all Scotty was saying was to change the battery.
@@MineFullStop the jolt /shudder issue on hondas.
Scotty: Look how much bigger mine is than his!
I suggest picking up a good multimeter. If you charge a battery, and the battery reads under 9.6 volts the battery is bad. To check the condition of the alternator do the following: while the engine is running, place your multimeter leads on the battery terminals, if you see any voltage less than 14.6 volts, your alternator is bad. On the older cars you could pull off the battery terminals, and if the engine stopped, the alternator was bad. Might even want to purchase a digital voltage meter to install in your car. You can purchase one from Summit racing, Paws or even your local auto store. Just two wires to hook it up, and then find a convenient place to mount the gage. Then when you start your car, you will always know the condition of the battery.
Great video Scotty. 🎄 Merry Christmas
Been watching your videos for a while. Very informative. You've been saying from time to time find a mechanic with a scan tool to do this or that. Easier said than done. Scotty you are an anomaly. Good honest mechanics are very hard to find. Keep doing what you do.
I've seen this alot of times , low voltage can cause screwy things to happen to cars made after 2000 . Hard on alternators too . Batteries are cheaper than alternators .
My dad has a cheap scan tool, it isn't always very clear on explaining codes but it does reset and it certainly helps relieve the stress any warning light coming on brings.
Great Video Scottie, Thank you for your Honesty Sir!
Great videos Scotty. Always interesting stuff. Thanks.
It would be a real blessing to be sit down with you & talk abt mechanical sht. Idk much anything abt cars, but I can listen to you talk engines all day. I learn so much from you. Thank you for teaching me everything. You're a God send.
A Honda transmission shudder at low speed or when shifting into overdrive is generally caused by worn out friction modifiers in the transmission fluid. Changing the fluid with a drain and fill of Honda DW-1 fluid typically eliminates the shudder. I have a 2004 Acura TSX and a 2011 Honda CRV. Both transmissions shuddered. A fluid drain and fill eliminated the shudder in both cars.
Yeah but for how long? I thought he said if your car is high mileage it’s a bad idea to change the transmission fluid??
@@CHAISOICY I have never completely changed the tranny fluid. This is not recommended by Honda. Simply drain the fluid by removing the drain plug. This will remove about 3.5 quarts of the 7.4 quarts in the tranny. I have carried out this procedure every 60K miles. The shudder tends to show up after about that many miles.
@@CHAISOICY BTW, each of my cars have been driven about 175K miles.
Drain and refill. Don't flush. That's when the problem starts
@@CHAISOICY never ever flush tranny
Scotty, just the movement of your hands charged the car 😳😛😉

Merry Christmas to you and your family thanks for all you do for us..
Scotty I wish I had half your energy. Love it man. Great video.
EXCELLENT...
THANK YOU SCOTTY. 👍
Scotty doesn't really understand the difference between voltage and current. If your alternator is working properly, a weak battery that can still start the car will make no difference once the engine is running. A weak battery will definitely not cause above normal alternator charging voltages. The output of the alternator is always voltage regulated. I have an electrical engineering degree.
You are awesome ! A well of car info. Deep well !
Thank GOD for Scott, who expose the truth in auto repair and mechanics
Great diagnostic I appreciate that
Excellent video. Have learned a lot from Scotty.
Thank you Mr Scottie!
Just love watching you, make me laugh every time and I learn something every time, your a great wealth of knowledge and gift to a blue collar guy that works on his own vehicles, and if have to go to shop I already have Scotty’s diagnosis
Civic's have small batteries. Honda Insight has even smaller $149+ ' motorcycle ' battery with very low cranking amps. Cold weather further lowers it's ability to start. The headlamps and radio on puts an immense drain on this dinky battery. Been stranded 10+ times needing a jump. Macgyvered an 18v Ryobi battery to jump it several times. Kept a spare battery to jump it.Low battery can also fail a smog test becoz the ECU and monitor sensors are not getting enough voltage. Be careful if your car is near smog due, and u disconnect the battery bcoz u will have to reset the drive cycle/ readiness monitors. Bought a $54 slightly bigger battery with way more cranking amps & was able to fit it in after removing the plastic battery tray. Question: is there a mid priced scan tool that can reset the drive cycle? Readiness monitors? Also I saw a YT vid where a mechanic shows that when u power on a Honda 1st on position, but don't turn on the ignition or start car...the check engine light on dash will light up for ~20 secs...it blinks OFF...means Drive Cycle monitors (sensors) are good to go. If after ~20 secs...check engine light blinks 5 times: Drive Cycle Readiness monitors not ready.
Scotty, your videos are the best. We need you in Florida.
i wish i had even half of your energy!!!
Scotty my uncle used to be a mechanic. He passed away. I asked him how did you get so good. And he said “I watch this cool American guy called scotty Kilmer. He loves Japanese cars too”
Who would have thought Scotty is just about complaining. Love your channel. Thank you.
Scotty, I found that the Honda Accord ( I forget the year ? ) was ledgendary for ghost problems that had every engine symptom you could think of only once in a while but ran fine most of the time. Long story short... it turned out i discovered it was voltage drop through a 15 amp breaker on the feild coil of the alternator that was shareed with the fuel pump. Changing the fuse from 15 amp to 20 solved all the temperamental ghost problems at once permanently. I was getting relay fluttering from voltatge drop.
I like your hand and arm
Communication-assist Scotty...built-in cardio never hurts!
Good point Scotty my old Auto shop teacher said on most Vehicles need a minimum of 10,5 volts to operate the accessories DC electrical stuff won't work right under that voltage!!!
Modern cars need a lot more than 10.5v. They need at least 12.25v (which is 50% charged). Below 12v a battery is flat, and won't start or run a car.
Great work Scotty. The videos you upload are really good for us "down under" in New Zealand and Australia.... because many of the import cars we have here, are the same or similar to the cars you show in the USA.
... except they're upside down...
Greetings from up over

You are a good man Scotty !!!!!!
Merry Christmas, Scotty
Thanks Scotty for sharing your time and talent. I'm an older guy and appreciate the information especially when the weather is getting colder and batteries are not as strong in the winter. I usually take my wife's car a 2016 Hyundai to the dealer for service but I don't think they ever put a scan tool on it. They check the tires, brake pads and cabin filter and change the oil. Do you have a video about taking the vehicle to the dealer? What should we expect from a service checkup?

Hi Scotty! Love your vids! I just bought the Launch CRP 919. Probably overkill for me, but it does the job ok. What is your opinion of it? Maybe do a vid of it? Cheers!
Thank you, Scotty! Watching your videos ALL THE TIME !!! My car is a 2010 BMW 535 xdrive. Runs perfectly (225000 km ) Which scan tool do you recommend ( for under $200}? Is this Launch any good ? I value your opinion! Hope you have time and will respond !!! Michael, Toronto
Appreciate u letting us know who doesnt want us to know so we know who to look for .
what model battery tester are you using in this video?
A friend lost the pinion in her differential. It was howling when she took into her mechanic and gave him her warranty company information, which cost her $2400 for the year. They gave the insurance company the diagnosis and the company informed them, and my friend, that since the car was driveable when it came to the shop it was NOT broken, and not covered under her warranty. It cost her $2500 to repair the differential. I worked at a auto parts store and could have done it wth a complete differential for much less, bur she would not let me replace the entire rearend assembly.
We love you Scotty ‼️
In the dealer they would prob. change the trany and the battery to charge couple of thousands
Mr. Kilmer, I know You will save me money on one of these. I hope You are on here until they declare me unfit to drive. Not too long to wait for You. Thank You Sir! Happy New Year to You and Yours!
Good video.
Your info has helped me!
Wish U were my Mecanic!
People knock on all the computers but when you see them scan tools in action is pretty awesome.
Make sure you plug in a memory saver when you change the battery or crazy things will happen on newer cars!
My cousin used to tease me because my 1992 civic battery was the same one he used in his lawn mower!
Scotty, be careful with your strings for your hoodie was very close to the belts when you bent over order the hood….you were more concerned with the cameras shot……
Hey Scotty, can you just use a cheapo scan tool to reset the codes in this case or do you typically need a more expensive "fancy" scan tool to reset codes for the battery / charging system recall work?
Scotty, What is a good scan tool? Cost ?
Great and informative video..
I drive toyotas so no issues with them...never had a check engine light in 15 years of owning toyotas.
I have 3 of them as well as my entire family 9 total..lol

Ah! But have you revved up helicopter arms?
You should be careful about those strings hanging off your hoodie. Watch they don't get grabbed by the belt
@scotty_kilmer671 Talk about what?

Hey Scotty! What do you think of periodically charging a battery?.. I always charge my battery every 6 mo. On a 2amp charger..
Another thing.. I was working for the tow company today.. just doing jump starts and I had two 2019 vehicles.. so I checked the battery and they were both original to the car.. I wish everyone watched your videos..
I bought a blem Interstate for my F150 two years ago. After this weeks deep freeze and sub zero temperatures, it decided to stop working. My truck is outside all the time, not garaged. Removed the battery this morning, -11 degrees, and brought it inside. Once it is at room temp, I will put the charger on and see if it will come back to life. I have a 120v, 80 watt battery heater wrap that will be delivered next week that should help in early morning starts. I already have 2 oil pan heating pads on it that work well. Hoping it will make it the rest of the winter. If not, new battery time. My last Oreilly's Superstart battery never had issues starting on sub zero days. Stay away from Interstate blem batteries if you live in the arctic zone, or any blem discounted battery for that matter.
I have one I use in the UK it plugs in the USB socket normally found in the glove box in the car. Been great for resetting .it was cheap.
Small batteries is a trend to almost most of small and medium size japanese cars. In Tanzania Africa we buy a lot of used japanese cars with small batteries
That was a good one Scotty..... "winning number... maybe play that in the lottery...I don't know...."🤣😂😆
Great job, Scotty! My Honda civic is having trouble starting. No dashboard nor engine lights are on and starter was checked and no issues. The EGR was cleaned and a valve adjustment was performed and car is still having issues. First thing in the morning it turns on but then throughout the day is when the it starts not turning on at the first try. I also smell exhaust when I turn on the car, and it seems to be more of an issue when the gas is at, or below mid-way; when full, or near full it seems to turn on with no issue. Can anyone think what else the issue may be? I've taken the car to two mechanics with no answers. Many Thanks, and Merry Christmas.
Fuel pump may be the issue, pressure regulator......maybe an intermitent problem with the crank sensor
Hi joe here have your map sensor checked ?? it could also be a fuel sensor??🤗😏
Great video and Merry Christmas Scotty. Things that infuriate me - mechanics that don't reset codes when they have done their work should have their licenses revoked but I have had piss poor work done by "reputable" BMW dealerships. I recoomend to anyone who want to save $ - buy a $150-250 scan tool as it will at least point you in the right direction with respect to problem . . . I even have a very basic $50 scan tool that was adequate to diagnose a faulty crankshaft speed sensor on our 2007 VW Rabbit. . . .simple job to replace the part and the car now works fine. The money you can save by doing stuff yourself is significant. I don't think a lot of people realize how many issues can be caused on modern cars by a bad battery.
Great video Scotty. You're a wiz with those scan tools. Plan to get me one based on your other videos.
Yeah but when you disconnect the battery to replace it ...the computer goes blank....the you have to drive maybe 100 miles so all the information codes are in the computer...maybe hook up a second battery with test clips while changing the primary battery...
He's so correct. My battery was going bad... All kinds of wierd crap going on
Hehe 😁 sir I love your good spirit 👍🏻👍🏻 great info anyway.. thanks
Which battery/alternator/electrical scan tool is he using? Good content as always.
I don’t smoke weed…but if I did..I’d smoke it with this guy🤣💯
I know in my 2013 Honda fit
When I was on the highway it failed to go into 5th automatic gear and I didn’t notice any drive issue at the time beside the Drive light (D) was flashing which then I noticed the tack was a 4k rpm should’ve been at 2 1/2 at 70mph
I got home unplugged the battery and connected it and the D lite never flashed again.
But according to Honda if there’s any transmission issues it will throw a check engine on and D light to flash continuously.
Excellent video excellent content
Scotty....woow, this is good.
I love your videos.
Please organise a diagnostic machine for me. Will pay for it and the postage.
The problem my 2 civics ('92 & '94) had were that the mufflers heat shield would rattle horribly when accelerating.
Those thin aluminum heat shields will break loose near the bolts that hold them on .
Buy a couple of large stainless steel aircraft type clamps and
wrap them around the Catalytic converter and heat shield and re-secure them and youll be all set .
What tool is that for testing battery and alternator?
What is a good battery?
Does Scotty make a recommendation for car battery brands?
Good movie bro 👌
I had it down to a battery before you lifted the bonnet. ❤🇬🇧
A few weeks ago I jumped started someone in 2018 Honda accord Outside a Chick-fil-A in Goodyear Arizona the battery inside of it was about the size of a Samsung Galaxy tab A it was tiny I told them to Maybe ditch led acid batteries and get an AGM battery because that battery is stupid tiny and if you've got electronics plugged in to the vehicle charging off of the battery while you're driving or out and about I can see it dying while he's going in a Chick-fil-A to get his food I jumped there battery let them go on his way and told him to look into it.
Toyota Matrix Battery was Also Small, the camera didn't sit still enough to notice, Thanks Scotty
I REMEMBER WHEN I HAD ISSUES WITH MY HONDA AND STUCK A TRUCK BATTERY IN IT IT WAS FINE. Put my own custom sound system in it and it included a second battery with a few other trinkets and that thing ran like a beast.
Just asking how or around how much was that reader you have..my son 2013 chevy malibu is showing low power it will run for a few then shut off and make like a leaking huss then is goings off we just changed mass air flow sensor should we do the battery next
What are some good scan tools do you recommend and where to buy them
It's posted in EVERY video, in this video as well. The link, item description.
Are there any good extended warranties ?
After a while a lot of car-owners replace their battery ( when going bad) by some cheaper model . And this usually comes by a lower Ah , say original 500Ah replaced by a 400Ah ( saves you 50d) . After1-2 year most of these cars happens to have some ' electrical- electronic troubles' .
Can you make a show on what you think on a 2008 Miata Touring ?
U the man Scotty.😉
