But that mother couldn't even sue the Chinese company even if there was the manufacturer's name and address on the item, as China doesn't have a shared law contingent with the US, hence why they can get away with so many copyright infringing knock offs, and why a lot of Chinese box art is stolen from Deviant Art.

Have you ever checked out Alibaba (dot) com? It's an entire Chinese site dedicated to these knock offs. It would be a gold mine for your bootleg zone series!!! You can even request free samples! Fascinating site. From USB sticks to arcade machines!
But the suing thing is funny, so very American, try and profit from simply being offended, rather than it be used honestly to reimburse you for lost revenue and injury.

I've looked around Alibaba as it's been a good spot to at least see the names of some of these bootlegs. Never got anything just cause of the buy in bulk thing. I didn't know about the free samples though, I'll have to check into that!

In the mother's defense, she probably just assumed it featured the same image on the package and didn't feel she had to check it, and assumed the name was just because it was a cheap dollar store toy and didn't see it at first. There was also a tab, that you had to remove before you could operate it.
I came across one of these at a dollar store in Michigan a couple years ago. I was working for a inventory counting company and we did alot of dollar stores and such types. Family Dollar, Dollar General, Dollar Tree, Dollar Party. I saw one at a Dollar Tree. Didn't see what it did because as you say it has a tab, and my job was to count the toys, not play with them. So I never thought anything of it, other than the fact that it was called Evilstick of all the weird names out there. Seeing what alot of them turned out to be because of Phelous's review here it really does unsettle oneself knowing that those really were bought for kids without the idea that it could harbor something that disturbing. It really does go to show just how easy it is to corrupt even the most innocent things like toys and children in today's society. It's sad really. Although Phelous really makes it funny.

***** It was meant to be a toy for Halloween. Like a girl dresses up like a evil princess, and then the "Evil Stick" is an accessory to that effect. Although the age recommendation is way too low IMO it makes way more sense in the context of being for Halloween.

Don't feel bad about having spent that much money for it. Dollar store toys made by these fly-by-night overseas companies exist for such a short time that you need to grab them while they exist. In another ten years, they'll be _extremely_ rare since the kids who bought them will have thrown them out. Then you'll have a very cool vintage conversation piece. And if you have grandkids or little nephews or neices and they see this video, they'll want to see the evilstick for themselves and it'll be cool to show them.

yes, even though the cardcaptor sakura anime is my favorite anime.
I think the biggest issue of this is that nowhere on the packaging does it say it’s a surprise toy where you don’t know if you’ll get a good image or a bad image. It’s a pretty cool gimmick idea, but you should know about it before buying it. It just says that you’ll get beautiful music and fairy stuff, nowhere does it say you might get a good image or a bad image.
Also they’re straight up stealing images they don’t own and making a profit out of it.

Wow I remember seeing these things in a 99 cent store before the store went under. I remember the store had a hole stack of these things and they all had the evil cackle. Funny enough they all had the demon girl picture and one or two of the zombies, at least I think so. I was like 7 or maybe 9 at the oldest when I saw these things and I just remember seeing the demon girl and hearing the cackle while thinking "This sounds like every Halloween decoration we own." I thought it was too stupid and just walked away from them and picked up some bootleg dolls or plastic animals for my zoo playset. When they hit the news years later I remember looking at it like "Hey that's that stupid wand thing" before I went back to my homework or something.

My little girl wanted a fairy wand for her birthday so I got her the evil stick, I thought nothing of it at the time, the next morning I got up and saw she was playing with it and pretending to talk to someone who must of been the villain of her pretend game, as she wasn't happy with them when she talked to her, I asked who she was talking to and she said the girl with the red eyes and at that moment the evil stick lit the sducidal little girl picture and then my daughter dropped it and screamed as it laughed and as it laughed it bursted into blue flames and from that day since I get my kids Disney toys instead

You know, you could make it into a cosplay accessory. Just remove the batteries, ttry and cover up the original picture, paint some extra details and it'll look fairly alright.
Wanted to give you a bit of an update from the Hoosier state.
There is a candy store downtown that is now selling, get this, MAGIC STICKS. What is so special about this? It's the same damn 'company' putting out an updated version of the Evil Stick. It even has the same packaging of using an anime magical girl character (though in this case, I don't know who it is. I know it wasn't Sakura) who has been badly photoshopped into holding the MAGIC STICK. It has the same gimmick but this time I think it has a sort of roto-scope effect where it spins and the picture and sound are projected through the movement.
I say I THINK because unlike the original Evil Sticks, all batteries have been removed so you can't even test the product in stores to see what it does or looks like. There is a whole chest full of these things when you enter the store and I instantly thought of Bootleg Zones when I saw them. The thing that I find so weird though is while this store does sell nostalgia and really off-the wall stuff, something like this is really odd and it makes me wonder where the hell they got these things from.
