  • Iconic daytime show Countdown is set to welcome a string of new faces to the presenter’s chair for a month long run of special episodes. To mark Channel 4’s 40th anniversary, four eminent broadcasters and Countdown fans, Baroness Floella Benjamin, Sir Trevor McDonald, Reverend Richard Coles and Moira Stuart will join the show as host.
The guest presenters will each take on a weeklong hosting stint, joining lexicographer Susie Dent and arithmetical whizz Rachel Riley on the show. Joining Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner will be criminal barrister and broadcaster Rob Rinder, newsreader and presenter Dan Walker, maths genius and writer Bobby Seagull and actor and presenter Christopher Biggins.
Oct 31st to Nov 4th: Baroness Floella Benjamin
    Dictionary Corner Guest: Rob Rinder
7th Nov to 11th Nov: Richard Coles
    Dictionary Corner Guest: Dan Walker
14th Nov to 18th Nov: Sir Trevor McDonald
    Dictionary Corner Guest: Bobby Seagull
21st Nov to 25th Nov: Moira Stuart
    Dictionary Corner Guest: Christopher Biggins
    Background:
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the numbers round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). DCDL debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 50th anniversary.
    Spin-off:
"8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations ten years ago.

Btw, I missed Richard Whiteley very much when I watched his first countdown appearance in today show's archive. He was very funny.
For the first round, it is easy to be noticed that 776 = 800 - 24 = 8 x 97. Therefore, the easy way for the first round is:
    100 - 3 = 97
    97 x 8 = 776
For the second round, I get the same as Rachel's solution as it is easy to get 73 and 10.
For the third round, a one-away solution (I guess it is the one in Rachel's mind) is:
    100 + 3 = 103
    10 - 1 = 9
    103 x 9 = 927
    927 - 6 = 921
For the final round, it is also an easy round. Another solution is:
    100 + 25 = 125
    125 x 2 = 250
    8 / 8 = 1
    3 - 1 = 2
    250 + 2 = 252

The actual day of the anniversary, as you've pointed out, is of course tomorrow. In case you're referring to the date in the title (31 October 2022) though, Channel 4 will have a total of 20 such anniversary episodes over the next four weeks; during their anniversary month.

I can't believe they didn't just do this:
    100 - 3 = 97
    97 x 8 = 776
If you want to use all the numbers, you can do this:
    100 x 2 = 200
    200 + 75 = 275
    275 - 8 = 267
    267 x 3 = 801
    801 - 25 = 776
However, the more complex solution is pointless since it's still based on the same idea as (100 - 3) x 8.
This second round is also easy, but there's only one solution.
The third round is impossible, but there's an easy way to one away using Lewis' starting point:
    10 - 1 = 9
    100 - 6 = 94
    94 x 9 = 846
    846 + 75 = 921
The other way I saw was:
    100 - 1 = 99
    99 x 10 = 990
    990 + 6 = 996
    996 - 75 = 921
The final round was also easy:
    100 - 8 - 8 = 84
    84 x 3 = 252
And a more interesting solution using all the numbers is:
    25 + 3 = 28
    28 - 8 = 20
    100 x 20 = 2000
    2000 / 8 = 250
    250 + 2 = 252
I got this idea from the four-large technique of multiplying 100 x 50 and dividing by 8 for 625.

Ah yes, the 94 times tables, of course

    • @bjoern.gumboldt
      @bjoern.gumboldt  Před rokem +2

Has nothing to do with the 94x table actually. You got 921 with a digit sum of 9+2+1=12 and you subtract 75 with a digit sum of 7+5=12 from it, so your answer (i.e., 846) will be divisible by 9 and 846/9=94. Then you just have to figure out how to get the 94; however, it's an intermediate result and there's no need to know the 94x table to make use of it.

    • @rodrigomarinho1807
      @rodrigomarinho1807 Před rokem +2

For the 921 - in which I got stuck before Rachel said it was impossible - I did
      10-1 = 9
      100 + 75/25 = 103
      103*9 = 927
      927 - 6 = 921

    • @Nullifidian
      @Nullifidian Před rokem +1

@@kingofrunescapepking Actually, I got it from the 9 times tables. Specifically, 9 x 6, and being able to tell that the difference between 75 and 54 is 21. So, if you subtract 6 from 100 before multiplying by 9, you get a number that when you add 75 to it becomes 921.
