This is the song that made me fall in love with my Norman when I was 5 years old, (he was my brothers friend) but he was 10 and could care less... until I was older... married him 40 yrs ago this year! Love my Norman still!!!! MY LOVE
dodd69, my oldest son is 34 & loves this era music since it is all I played when he was small. Rather like how my parents played Hank Williams when I was little and I still love that OLD country music so much.
Carl The Brit in The Philippines .... Have to agree all the way. We called her the Gorgeous Granny when I started in Radio in Australia in the mid 60s. Murray...Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Ok, this is my song ha ha. When I was in junoir high school the girls would always sing this song to me and at the time was embarassing. that was in 1961 and guess what for three weeks it was the number one hit. For the year it was the No. 3 song of the year. I have not listened to this song for at least 40 years. great to listen and Reminisce and laugh at a song that for a while made me embarassed..Love it now!!! thanks for posting it.
My name is Norman and I was in 6th grade when this song came out. All the girls sang it to me in school; and I was really shy and embarrased. So what do my parents do, then run out and buy the song on a 45 record and give it to me as a gift! I have never forgot this song; I love it now; I played it to my grandkids and they got a kick out of it!
Cute circle dance tune, early 60's, from cutie pie Sue Thompson. Blonde bombshell lovin' Norman. Also liked her song, Paper Tiger. Saw her do it on Lloyd Thaxton show. Great memories. Vive les rock and retro freaks...
I remember this song from the radio many years ago. I always assumed it was British as it sounds like a Music Hall "sing-along" song. Suprised to find out it was American. Still a great tune that has stood the test of time!
I was 13 when I saw Sue Thompson perform this on "Hollywood A Go Go." I developed a minor crush on her even though I figured she was about eight or nine years older than me. It really blew me away when I discovered a few decades later that she was actually older than my parents. You wouldn't know from this clip from "Hollywood A Go Go" that she was pushing 40. Rest In Peace, Sue!
On this day in 1962 {February 18th} "Norman" by Sue Thompson peaked at #3 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Top 100* chart... Eight days earlier on February 10th "Norman" peaked at #4 {for 2 weeks} on the Australian Kent Music Report chart... I still have her album, "Meet Sue Thompson" and it's been played a zillion times. Thanks Sue, for all the enjoyment you have given us fans who love you!
Remember going skating on an outdoor skating rink when I was about ten, and hearing this, when I went into a shack with a wood stove to get warm. Boy am I old.
This is "Hollywood A-Go-Go", which is why The Gazzari Dancers, in the background, are go-go dancing. This appearance was several years after "Norman" had been a hit. Sue Thompson performed at a supper club in Honolulu not long after the popularity of "Norman" and did a radio commercial for a used-car dealer, sung to the same music: "Diamond / The place to buy your ca-ah-ah-ah-ar / Diamond / Where all the bargains ah-ah-ah-ah-are / Diamond, Diamond Used Cars!"
Although I was only 9 years old at the time, I remember this tune!! My Brother Dave, was a high school senior, and played his radio while getting ready for school. I can remember lying in bed thinking... "She sounds like a cartoon!!" (I was in LOVE!)
A top talent and a beautiful lady as well..even my 20 year old son agrees there's no one like her today..Sue is still performing..you cant keep a top talent down!! Thanks for the posting..this is a gem!!
there was a hockey player back in the late fifties early sixtiesnamed norman that whenever the team came to new haven to play the blades the whole crowd would sing the song when he came out onto the ice.
Another Top 5 hit for Sue Thompson in January 1962. Sadly, this and Sad Movies would be her only big hits. Sue would not be the breakout act of the 1960's.
everytime i heard this song, i laugh a lot... i remember my grammy playing it with her old phonograph.. while she sing this song to me, she look at me and i cover up my lips to avoid laughing... so in the other time, she play it again, and i cannot carry it anymore... i laugh and laugh.. and my grammy said, OKAY, YOU LAUGH AT MY FAVOURITE SONG!!!!!!!!! DONT GET ME WRONG, YOUR HUSBAND IN THE FUTURE, NORMAN IS HIS NAME!!! i said, fuck up grand!!! stop playing that song! let's do the nae nae!!! and twerk!!
I used to go with a guy named Norman, way back in 1973. Oh gosh how I think of him when I hear this song. By the way, those girls are dancing "The Pony".
My mom's old boyfriend made her a mixtape with a bunch of old songs on it and this was one of them. We used to sing all of these together when I was little. good stuff!
On this day in 1965 {February 13th} Sue Thompson performed "Norman" on late Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand'... Four years earlier on December 4th, 1961 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #3 and spent 16 weeks on the Top 100... In 1962 British singer Carol Deene covered it; her version reached #24 in the U.K. R.I.P. Mr. Clark {1929 - 2012} and Ms. Thompson will celebrate her 88th birthday in six months on July 19th...
FYI, Sue is alive and well and lives in Pahrump, NV (me too). Pahrump is about 50 miles west of Las Vegas. Sue will occasionally do a show in Vegas as well as personal appearance at events here in Pahurmp.
After watching "Psycho" yesterday afternoon (5/10) (The 1960 black & white classic, not the cheapo 1998 remake.) I thought they should play the intro to this hit during the shower scene as well as when Bates murdered the private investigator, and then toward the end when he went after Vera Miles in the fruit cellar. When I googled to see who the singer was geez Louise there was a 0:27 clip of the song being played along with a few scenes from this 1960 thriller. Obviously the shower scene was in it. I'm glad I'm not the only one with a "Psycho" sense of humor. Incidentally, in the shower scene where the blood was going down the drain I've thought for a long time that this would've been a great advertisement for Roto Rooter. "Call Roto Rooter, that's the name and you'll wash your troubles down the drain! Roto Rooter!" How's that sound?
@Ezdduf4kuZ , I think I meant to say I met Norman when I was 5 and he was 10. that would be crazy. thanks for bring that to my attention. it was great to hear the song again, but my Norman doesn't really like the song,LOL I was 16 when we married. actually I just turned 16, my parents really didn't like the idea but I was very persistent. we wanted to get married when I was 15 but they weren't hearing it. thanks Nora oh did I tell you my name was Nora LOL
She was thought to be 19 at this time (actually 39)... she never corrected their error. LOL! She did a great duets album with Don Everly of the Everly Brothers too!
@mamaclucker That`s an incredible story, you were 5 & hewas 10 & that was 40 years ago in 1971, That means you`d of been no older than 9 wen you got married as this was a hit in 1964 I believe. If you were 45 in 1964 then you were 9 in 1971 which was 40 years ago today. Do the math...I did & your 49 yrs young now but 40 years ago you were 9 & this song was played as a top 40 song when u were 5 yrs old,. isn`t that right! You were 5 & you married 40 yrs ago in 1971 at 9 yrs old.WOW
@LadyOfMaine Hi LadyofMaine, This guy Norman who I am talking about lives in a town here in Massachusetts, in the next town over from me. Blessings, guinnevere100
T would sing this song to my student Norman, or at least parts of it, as he quietly came into class and sat down at his desk. He & his best friend Charles, were great students in one of my grade 6 core classes @ Darcel Senior Public School, Malton, ON Canada, many years ago. I usually began English 101 with a spelling class in the afternoon Core classes. It was fun to teach there. 1151A 9.13.13 Hope u and yours are doing fine. Love Eleanor
Anyone know who the musicians are on this. Think this is Hollywood A-go go t.v. show. Band guys are killin' me...too cool! I would think this is about '63-'64 around in there. Sue Thompson is now about 87 years old. Unbelieveable! Wonder if she is still this cute?
I love this song! This type of song comes from a more innocent time, before the Kennedy assasination, the Vietnam War, and the rise of the 1960's counterculture. By the way, does anyone know the name of the dance those girls are doing at 1:17? It sort of reminds me of the way the Peanuts kids are dancing on "A Charlie Brown Christmas". LOL.
