Good video - one of the other mistakes is leg position - some people spread their legs apart on the first part of the stroke. I never had problems with technique since I have been rowing since I was a child. Just the same - good video. When I row I do 10,000 meters in roughly 30-31 minutes. I am along distance kayak racer.

I rowed at Oxford last century and I’ve got one improvement you can make - you drop your hands too low when taking the stroke - keep them higher so there is a straight line between the cog on the machine and your shoulder socket. Otherwise you will be losing power just straightening the linkage of all these elements - the chain and your arms need to act as one long uninterrupted rail.

Finally after a month got the rowing stroke right I still can't do it without the foot straps though. I was rowing all wrong for about three weeks but I still hot exhausted and I still lost a lot of belly fat sooo I'm guessing it was working my core somehow. I have tried every single piece of gym equipment. Treadmill was amazing for weight loss but it left me skinny with a huge belly believe it or not. Rowing has got rid of that and I'm starting to see the start of abdominal muscles FINALLY

I started rowing for fitness about a year and a half ago, and this video has made all the difference. I always do the two minute pick drill at the start of every rowing session. I worked really hard the first six months on my form and slowly increasing my length of rowing time. What’s amazing is that focusing on these basics has allowed me to row injury and pain free (and I have two bum knees and lower back). I can row longer and stronger than other people half my age (I’m almost the big 5-0). My current PR is 5000 meters in distance, and I can row about 23 minutes non-stop. I got there little by little. Started only able to row 5 minutes and slowly add a bit more time. Rowing has become my favorite!

Thank you so much, Austin! I have owned a rowing machine for over 10 years and been rowing on and off for over 30 years. All this time, I've been guilty of all three mistakes, most especially relying on the foot straps. So much so that I always ended up dragging the rowing machine back about 6 feet across the floor for every 10 minutes of rowing!
As a guy in his forties with back problems, your video has helped me immensely. I can really feel the core working now which will strengthen the whole area and should help alleviate some of my back pain. Thanks again, dude.

Three suggestions for a good stroke:
    1) relax your shoulders - you should feel the power between your scapula
    2) don't grip the bar, just loosely hold it
    3) at the catch, put masking tape one inch below and above where the chain is. You should be in that range throughout your stroke

Long time weight lifter…just got my concept 2 setup today. Your example of knee bounce in a deadlift was a great visualization for me…comparing the rowing stroke to proper form with a deadlift-finishing with the power at lockout at the top of the lift. That clicks for me thank you thank you! First row today…I might have looked like a melting chocolate bar on the machine when I got tired 😂 😅

Your video was so helpful. I’m heading out to pick up my rower today and I have never even sat on one before. Now I know how to start using it properly and get most out of it before it’s even in my house. I also very much appreciated the why and how to fix the bad habits. Thanks so much! I will be checking out more of your videos.

Those are the most basic things you always have to think about, big thumbs up. When I was rowing for my School years ago we did this as warming up with those exercises, a kind of mental drilling focus and movement all those energy you transfer needs to be on point and timing. Besides you eliminate a lot of injuries even we rowing 5 days a week we starting with this, after 30 yrs my muscles are still remember the flow of the drive the core the pause after the cycle and before the cycle with the breathing.

Great video, Austin! I am new to rowing and just purchased a Concept2. I want to develop good habits from the get go, and I would love for you to make a follow along video incorporating these drills more in depth. It would be extremely helpful.

I coach a Ladies U25 squad and still have to remind myself of good technique when I am on a machine, even after doing it for years, it is easy to slip out of it without being aware. Great tips Training Tall.

I recently started working as a housekeeper at a local gym and decided to try out the rowing machine last night for my first time. With the exception of the knee bounce, I think I made both of the other mistakes you mentioned. Thanks for putting me on the right track.
