Very pleased to announce the release of my new eBook, 'Row Your Fat Off!'. If you have just began using the rowing machine or recently purchased a machine for yourself, THIS is the ultimate guide to get you started in the right direction towards your fat loss goals! You can check it out from the link in the description box above! THANK YOU for all of your support!!
Good video - one of the other mistakes is leg position - some people spread their legs apart on the first part of the stroke. I never had problems with technique since I have been rowing since I was a child. Just the same - good video. When I row I do 10,000 meters in roughly 30-31 minutes. I am along distance kayak racer.
I bought a rowing machine to gain muscle. And you mentioned the no strap drill, I personally prefer it, better workout. Much more challenging. Yes more drill vids would be great.
TT- I love the tips on rowing, but I gotta give a shout out for those socks you have on!;)
I can't find your book!
Ok
S
I think the thing I appreciate the most about this channel, is that you don't pull the usual CZcams move of BSing for 12 mins at the beginning of your videos. Just straight to the topic that brought us here. Thank you so much for not wasting my time!
I spend 15 minutes, 3 times a week doing all three mistakes 😳😳😳
At least now you know!!! Now you can start making good changes!
🤣
Yes giving birth hurts a lot more for a lot longer time.
Laura S Anecdotally, kidney stones in male patients supposedly come close:-)
Did you lose weight?
I rowed at Oxford last century and I’ve got one improvement you can make - you drop your hands too low when taking the stroke - keep them higher so there is a straight line between the cog on the machine and your shoulder socket. Otherwise you will be losing power just straightening the linkage of all these elements - the chain and your arms need to act as one long uninterrupted rail.
I noticed he did that too, up and over his knees
It is a bit insane how such a short simple video can be so helpful. I really can't thank you enough Austin Sir.
Right??? 👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
The deadlift comparison had me laughing.😂 this video was extremely helpful; thank you so much!
Yup!!! 👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
Oh my, I thought I was looking so hot on the rowing machine today but now I know I was doing it wrong lmao thanks for this info!
It's all about learning! I hope this helps you out for the future!
Same
SAMEEEEE.... I probably look like a full at row house. They do teach all these drills but during the workout when I get lost I start looking like a full!
Finally after a month got the rowing stroke right I still can't do it without the foot straps though. I was rowing all wrong for about three weeks but I still hot exhausted and I still lost a lot of belly fat sooo I'm guessing it was working my core somehow. I have tried every single piece of gym equipment. Treadmill was amazing for weight loss but it left me skinny with a huge belly believe it or not. Rowing has got rid of that and I'm starting to see the start of abdominal muscles FINALLY
Omg same 🙈🙈🙈 kinda always check before doing things lol
I started rowing for fitness about a year and a half ago, and this video has made all the difference. I always do the two minute pick drill at the start of every rowing session. I worked really hard the first six months on my form and slowly increasing my length of rowing time. What’s amazing is that focusing on these basics has allowed me to row injury and pain free (and I have two bum knees and lower back). I can row longer and stronger than other people half my age (I’m almost the big 5-0). My current PR is 5000 meters in distance, and I can row about 23 minutes non-stop. I got there little by little. Started only able to row 5 minutes and slowly add a bit more time. Rowing has become my favorite!
I watched this as I was on the rower right now! It helped me fix what I’ve been doing incorrectly for the last few years! I also love that you don’t have a looooong ol’ 500 minute spiel before finally getting to the important content! I am now a subscriber! Thank you for your help, Tall Guy! Jennifer
Eleven years ago, when I retired, was the first time that I walked into a gym. I saw all these beautiful machines with pictures on them. I had no clue how to use them. After viewing this video apparently that hasn't changed. In my opinion this is an outstanding instructional video I know that I will reach better gains because of it. Thank you Austin.
Thank you Joe!
Sir as a national rower if your looking for gains I don’t think rowing is the way to go, it is an extreme cardio and is great for toning up but not for gains
Just bought a home rowing machine. This video was so helpful for tips on how to start learning proper technique! This is an example of the GOOD use of youtube. Thanks for providing useful info!
Thanks for watching Zach! Happy rowing!
Wow. I haven't been in a gym in 25 years and decided I needed the rowing machine in my workouts..
Started using it twice in 2 days.
GREAT that I could at least get 15 minutes out each session.
BUT !!! ALL WRONG.
I'm really happy that I looked and looked and
Found you mate
From tomorrow .it's trying to do it the correct way.
Just great demonstration from you
Thank you 🙂🦘🦘🦘🦘
I’m guilty of bad habits, but I’m just getting started, so I’m gonna work to fix them!
Super useful! Exactly what I needed to know.
Just went to the gym to try the tips in this video and it’s a damn game changer, thanks so much
Woo!! That's what I like to hear! Rock on.. keep up the great work!
Haven't had my first class yet but this was most helpful.
Great video brotha. Thank you!
Thank you so much, Austin! I have owned a rowing machine for over 10 years and been rowing on and off for over 30 years. All this time, I've been guilty of all three mistakes, most especially relying on the foot straps. So much so that I always ended up dragging the rowing machine back about 6 feet across the floor for every 10 minutes of rowing!
As a guy in his forties with back problems, your video has helped me immensely. I can really feel the core working now which will strengthen the whole area and should help alleviate some of my back pain. Thanks again, dude.
I’ve been in love with rowing and I’ve just recently discovered it at age 48/49 years old and I’m rocking it . I have 24lbs to go out of 40lbs I needed to lose and I’ll have lost them by July 2019 : my word ...
Thanks for the tips ... I mean it
Rock on!! Way to go!! Keep up the amazing work and there is nothing you can't accomplish.
It's July 2019!! How are you getting on!
!!!
How is it going?? :)
Nice! Never too late, 👍🏾👊🏾✌🏾🇳🇬🇺🇸
Superb summary. Thank you.
Great video! Thanks!
It’s easier to learn proper technique than fix faulty learning. Great tips. Thank you.
You'v got that right!
As a person who has been rowing for 4 years, his advice is amazing. There is nothing i could critique him for
I see so many people doing it incorrectly (and trying to correct me for actually doing things like the catch even when using the machine when youre supposed to)
Thanks for explaining it like a rower, not a person who knows nothing about it
Great video. I needed this advice.
Super helpful, thank you!!
I’m new to rowing. So glad I checked out your breakdown video so I can develop great habits from the start! Thank you so much.
Really needed this and would love to see a video with all the drills. I realized I was a complete "melt" but thought I was being efficient. 😳
Fantastic tips!!!
Good tips! Thanks!
Bro thank you so much for this!! Now I can right my wrongs ☺️👍
Three suggestions for a good stroke:
1) relax your shoulders - you should feel the power between your scapula
2) don't grip the bar, just loosely hold it
3) at the catch, put masking tape one inch below and above where the chain is. You should be in that range throughout your stroke
Love these tips! Thanks for sharing!!
Great video! Thank you
love this....super fun!
Your instruction is so great. THANK YOU!
Thanks man, that is kind of you to say! Glad you liked the video!
Long time weight lifter…just got my concept 2 setup today. Your example of knee bounce in a deadlift was a great visualization for me…comparing the rowing stroke to proper form with a deadlift-finishing with the power at lockout at the top of the lift. That clicks for me thank you thank you! First row today…I might have looked like a melting chocolate bar on the machine when I got tired 😂 😅
Thank you. Great video.
Great video!
Yes on drills!!! It’s easier to connect to your videos. I still use the Concept 2 workout of the day.
Sincerely these are insanely helpful Thank you so much for this!!!!
I am so glad you like the vid, Despized! Hope rowing goes well for you!

Are you still rowing?
@@dailaholder7326 I read this as "are you still growing" first and laughed. How are ya doing, OP?
This is brilliant! I do crossfit and wanted to know how to improve my technique on the rower, next time I work out I'll see which of those mistakes I make and then practice the drills. Legend!
I hope that you can find these drills helpful! :)

Excellent tutorial on the basics, and yes, I’ve been making those mistakes too. But not any longer! Flying off the back of the seat as I did yesterday is painful and embarrassing. Cheers!
Excellent, Nigel! One day at a time and with practice, you will become an outstanding rower!
Great and informative video, thank you!
Thanks for sharing this video 😊😀😄. Useful tips posted.
That was absolutely fantastic and as someone brand new to rowing with a new Hydrow machine, I really want to be sure that I am developing good habits from the very beginning! The format of pointing out the top mistakes that people make was really super helpful! Thank you so much for making such an awesome video

Thanks for banging this video together. 👍👍👏
Thank you for sharing your experience. I just got my first machine to learn how to row and develop fitness! Will try what you suggested.
Your video was so helpful. I’m heading out to pick up my rower today and I have never even sat on one before. Now I know how to start using it properly and get most out of it before it’s even in my house. I also very much appreciated the why and how to fix the bad habits. Thanks so much! I will be checking out more of your videos.
Nice!! Happy rowing to you, Amanda!!
Those are the most basic things you always have to think about, big thumbs up. When I was rowing for my School years ago we did this as warming up with those exercises, a kind of mental drilling focus and movement all those energy you transfer needs to be on point and timing. Besides you eliminate a lot of injuries even we rowing 5 days a week we starting with this, after 30 yrs my muscles are still remember the flow of the drive the core the pause after the cycle and before the cycle with the breathing.
Rock on, Mishell! Thanks for sharing!
Very well described. I subbed. Thanks bro
Thank you these tips. I have ordered my machine and can't wait apply towards my workout.
tx!! everyone seems to have its own technique honestly
Thank you very much for this video. It really helps seeing these things explained. I admit i did all 3 wrong. I promise to do better from now on :)
You are very welcome! It takes a lot to admit when you're doing things wrong - but you have the right attitude to go about things and fix those issues! Keep up the hard work and there is nothing stopping you!
Love this channel. Just started rowing at a rowing studio here in NYC.
I appreciate how you get right to the point and Immediately start explaining. You explain very fast and simple. Truly appreciate this video. You have motivated me follow you and watch your videos for further fitness knowledge. Thanks.
Great video, Austin! I am new to rowing and just purchased a Concept2. I want to develop good habits from the get go, and I would love for you to make a follow along video incorporating these drills more in depth. It would be extremely helpful.
How awesome, Kat! How are things going so far with your new machine?
I coach a Ladies U25 squad and still have to remind myself of good technique when I am on a machine, even after doing it for years, it is easy to slip out of it without being aware. Great tips Training Tall.
We all need the reminders! Thanks, Dave! I appreciate you watching!
Thank you for this! Very helpful. ☺️
Absolutely sensationally helpful video!
I recently started working as a housekeeper at a local gym and decided to try out the rowing machine last night for my first time. With the exception of the knee bounce, I think I made both of the other mistakes you mentioned. Thanks for putting me on the right track.
Thanks, man! Happy to help!
Yesterday was my first time using the machine at the gym, I really dislike gym machines but I think I’ll love this one been eyeing it for years. After watching your video I’ll be able to correct my melting and strap dependence mistakes! Much appreciated!!
