Couple weeks back I as a patient was diagnosed with a significant cholesteatoma it is quite rare 13 people per 100,000 a GP will see one case every 5-8 years depending on patient size
Take the entire population of Bristol 61 people out of that entire town will have a cholesteatoma in a lifetime
2 Med students were present when this was picked up with a video and photo otoscope when the medic who picked it up saw it he explained it’s very rare and would like the med students to see it and remember it so more cases are picked up early before patients become deaf to which I agreed he went around the clinic and showed the med students the picture and they all came to look in my ear. They were excited and one said to me “what it like to have it” I was like “I had grommets my ears never been right so it just feels like the pain in the ass it’s always been infection after infection relentlessly for my whole life. Had they not come in they wouldn’t have seen something “really cool” as one remarked…. They were more excited than me. I now await ENT and possible surgery. I’m not excited but they got to see something they may never see if they don’t go on the GP or ENT route…. And I rocked up after 6pm so most would’ve gone home already but for the few that remained they got to see my “super cool” ear. Hahahahha
Now had it not been my ear and had I been the student/doctor I’d probably have found it cool too.
