- Today I am playing with upcycled aluminum cans, an embossing tool, and some alcohol ink. I am working on a cover for my Art Journal but this technique could be used to make all kinds of beautiful metal crafts.

Welcome to the Upcycle Design Lab. I craft with recycled, repurposed, and unwanted materials. There is a lot of experimenting with trash and recyclables to make them "new" again. If you enjoy reusing repairing and re-imagining old items, I hope you will stick around and check out some of my other Upcycling tutorials and join those of us who are rethinking the things we throw away.

I use stencils to add designs to my flat tin pieces. Then doodle in to cover all.
So ingenious!! Love recycling, especially if it can be adapted to creative otherwise pricier items !!
Thanks for watching Sharon.
When you drip the alcohol inks on and rub them ~ spray them with alcohol ink blending solution ~ it will help to spread ink and blend the colours better!
Thanks for the tip 🙂
You might try making embossers using sticks of wood with different shaped ends.
Hi Stanley - thanks for watching and sharing your ideas.
Love the reuse of the aluminum cans. Very neat project!
Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂
Wow!!! Your covers are gorgeous!!! TFS!
Thanks so much Kathy. Hope you are well.
Beautiful
Thanks Barb 🙂
Love it and the design you made, would love to see you make that design in a stamp and stencil
Hi thanks for watching and for the idea. 😊
I loved the silver embossing, but not the alcohol inks. Each to her own.
Hi Allison, Thanks for watching and commenting. I don't have a lot of experience working with alcohol ink but some folks get really beautiful results. 🙂
That is really pretty..cannot wait to see the finished product. Hope you are safe and well.
Thanks so much Deby. Hope you are good as well.
@@UpcycleDesignLab Cleaning and reorganizing my craft room...good Lord its insanity.
@@deby7821 Good for you. I could use some of your motivation. 🙂
@@UpcycleDesignLab Have to..it's all clogging my inventive space in my head...,
@@deby7821 lol I know that feeling 🙂
For alcohol ink:You should just use permanent markers. They're filled with alcohol ink.
Hi Adrienne - I have used old markers to make alcohol ink. czcams.com/video/Z9HO2ehoIuA/video.html
Thanks for watching.
The thing with using markers ( even Sharpie permanent) is that the colors do fade over time. Maybe if ya sprayed varnish over the markers?
Love this! I’d love to know if u have a video on how you attach these to your journal as covers 😍
Hi thanks so much for watching. Here is the link to part two of the project.

@@UpcycleDesignLab thanks so much! 🙌🏼
I just can’t work from the back freehand. I can’t see what I’m doing through the printed tin cans! I have to use a stencil or print my design onto a paper sized to the can size & lay it over the printed cans.
That's a good idea. Thanks for sharing. I agree it can be hard to see the design on the printed side. Thanks for watching 😊
Have you tried placing the sheet in A4 embossing folder and passing through a A4 big shot plus machine!
I haven't tried that. I don't have a big shot machine but it is on my wishlist.
How do you get the can sheets to stay flat?
Hi Lisa - thanks for watching and commenting. Here is a video I made on three ways to flatten the aluminum cans.

How sturdy is this? I'm pretty rough on my sketchbooks, and I'm worried I would ruin it quickly
Hi I am sorry but I can't give you a good answer. I have mine on display so it doesn't get much wear and tear. Having said that I believe the embossing would hold up well but I don't know about the alcohol ink. Thanks for watching. I hope that helps.
@@UpcycleDesignLab okay, got ya! Thanks so much for the great video and fast reply!
@@wickart4118 of course thanks again for watching.
Perhaps they can be varnished to increase durability.
