      Me too. The whole reason I have a drone in my 50's is that we are traveling the country in various campsite. I simply float it up above the site we are staying (following all permissions and laws by each entity) and spin around to get a 360 scenery view of where we are staying, and then bring it back down. Not interested in putting it over cities and zooming it around structures.

    Another ridiculous argument is when public places ban drones on their property "for the safety and privacy of their customers" but have no problem letting everyone walk around filming everyone with their phones or action cameras in 4K with AUDIO... but its the drones that are a concern that film from 100 feet away with no audio. 🤦‍♂

    1. We aren't DJI's "biggest customer".
    2. Because of Skydio's government contacts/contracts, including hiring former gov't officials, they do have immense influence. Of course, it helps that they also have the support of other US based drones companies.
    3. This isn't about security, per se', is about getting the average Joe Smoe's cameras out of the sky. Some believe it's to pave the way for drone delivery, but I also wonder if it isn't to lessen the number of prying eyes out there. Police departments and other gov't agencies are already concerned with smartphone cameras documenting their every move. Now include flying cameras in the hands of hundreds of "1st amendment auditors"... American made drones well cost significantly more than comparable DJI products, lessening their proliferation amongst the common people.
    4. DJI has been investigated and cleared several times of these same allegations. It's just amazing that this keeps coming up. Especially from idiots that are most likely carrying around a Chinese manufactured phone in their pockets as they traverse the corridors of the federal government and sit through committee meetings. Even if they don't have them on them in the gov't buildings, they certainly do 90% of the rest of the time. Not to mention whatever Google or Alexa products they might have at home.
    This is all so idiotic and blatantly disingenuous that it genuinely turns my stomach to think we are governed by such buffoons!

    Complicated topic. However, speaking as someone who works in a very technical field (data/communications related), and has dealt with data security related issues I have ZERO doubt the Chinese government collects data on foreign adversaries and their citizens. Saying that, you also have to realize there isn't a comprehensive federal law in the United States that explicitly prohibits companies from selling customer data to third parties that might ultimately end up in the hands of foreign adversaries like China. Trust me, you have no idea where your personal data ends up today. It gets collected domestically, bought/sold to various other companies (foreign and domestic), and you have no idea ultimately where that data ends up. Let's take the example of even our own US government's surveillance activities were not widely known to the public until revealed by whistleblowers. Most notable, disclosure by Edward Snowden and NSA surveillance programs.

    The only concern I have with this take is that it comes from a position of free market thought. No, I’m sure the leadership of DJI wouldn’t want to risk losing their market share in America. But the Chinese government has a record of requiring compliance at the point of a gun.
    I agree with you that the data capture isn’t actually occurring. I also think this is political grandstanding by uninformed politicians on the right (uninformed as it relates to drones). Unfortunately, uninformed politicians make bad decisions on both sides all too often.

I agree with Russ, there is more than one single company and plenty of politics and fear-mongering here. It is worth pointing out that the recently hired Director of Federal Policy for Skydio is Joe Bartlett, coming directly from his job as National Security Advisor to Elise Stefanik, the very same Representative from NY who is drafting and pushing the bills we are talking about. I have 3 questions on the subject matter you discussed on this video ‘DJI Drone Ban-Why I’m Not Worried.” First, while we know DJI drones connect to various satellites where you fly, how do you know if the data your DJI drones exchange with those satellites isn’t also transmitting your footage back to the Chinese government (via their connections with DJI)? One might as well ban toasters as they collect about the same volume of data as does one of my several DJI Drones. If it comes to data - what collects more than a cell phone (most of which have components from China). Overhead info?? Google Earth provides more than any drone. And how about the 800 Chinese satellites that we know about. One should be more concerned with the data that our own government wants to collect.

      @@WW5RM Yes, Your are correct that it should not have gotten this far, but this is not new. My Mooney plane had most parts supply “frozen” because a Chinese company purchased Mooney. Eventually the Chinese company sold because it could not survive without US sales. However, Mooney now sits in “no business limbo” in part because of US federal regulators. The FAA has changed from the regulators that we knew in 80’s & 90’s. They have opened up to foreign aircraft and engines (where most innovation is coming from), and the LSA’s change are beyond anything that we could have expected. One must distinguish between the law makers (Congress) who are mostly ignorant of what the real world is doing and the regulators (FAA) who is living the real world every day and is and has been very supportive of drones - working hard to get to BVLOS.

    Russ, I guess my thought was always that "If there was a full DJI ban" we could fly with Mavin or another 3rd Party App. I believe that if a Ban comes that it will be in the FCC side banning DJI's "apps" and not their hardware.. But again there are other apps we can fly with that will not be banned. I would love to see DJI come out with a U.S. version of the App DJIFly (I have suggested that to DJI but never heard back). It seems to me that having a U.S. based and certified client would totally eliminate any threat of spying or any type of data mining. Just my opinion.. Thanks

These are insane times when it comes to government actions, (even and including ) the Supreme Court. One other thought: If DJI gets banned, what could China do to retaliate? How about stop building proucts sold in the USA for US companies? They could also stop selling components to the US. That would pretty much cripple the entire US economy. The real issue here (and you covered it perfectly) is whether the company is actually doing anything they’re being accused of. I doubt it. And they’ve complied with every rule the US has put down, including RFID and no-flight zone requirements.

    SO nicely said Russ!! Completely banning DJI drones would be both catastrophic and just plain 'impossible' to accomplish I believe. I just bought the Air 3 (Awesome bird BTW), but hesitated buying it for months because of this whole 'ban DJI' crap.. But after doing some of my own research, I decided (exactly what you mentioned in this video) that it is completely illogical to even 'try' to ban literally millions of drones.. 🤦 and if such a thing did happen, you'd probably start seeing all kinds of black market 'drone hacks' popping up.. 😂 Great video Russ, Always appreciate your professional opinion 👍👍

    My concern would be more about the app's permissions and what it could get from certain users or clients, particularly government agencies. Those data breach capable firmware/app software loads wouldn't be updated and utilized until the last moment. As far as your pics and videos, he's right, those are fairly useless and quite common knowledge. Google Earth has that covered. Your local police data, your senator who flies drones phone data, or access to microphone listening- that is where shit gets messy. Chinese companies unfortunately have little choice but to comply if and when the CCP rolls into thier office. Might sound crazy, but it is possible. Google is constantly monitoring voice for targeted ads. We have to be vigilant with every possible threat. This same concern is why TikTok is getting pushed against.

    • @HanTheProphet
      @HanTheProphet Před měsícem

      I agree 100%. Most people who use drones or tiktok cant wrap their head around this because its easier to believe that the government is corrupt than consider sacrificing some dopamine. I just think its the competent thing to do, China does it to their people and I see it as competent cybersecurity policy. I have chinese security cameras in my house and they're firewalled from the rest of my devices and ever talking back home to servers. most people arguing against these bans have a wifi password that you can crack in 15 minutes, they really should be glad that other people care about this shit
      perhaps a 100% ban is overboard, but people need to be more security conscious. most people assuming this is all about money without knowing the first thing about technology is disappointing. if china overtakes the US, this kind of general stupidity will be why.

    Google has sent cars with camera to systematically map every single US road (and surrounding infrastructure) with high resolution images and frequent updates. I think that combined with any Chinese spy satellites would be far better for intelligence gathering than hoping a random drone pilot happens to fly by a point of interest.

    I worked my a@@ off to finally afford my DJI Matrice 30T and I’m working hard to make a profit with it and pay it off! If my $13,000 drone becomes a paperweight because a bunch of inferior drone companies don’t want to compete on an even playing field there will be lawsuits levied at the Commercial Drone Alliance and their partners! How dare they!! what new and up-and-coming company is going to replace my M 30 T with a Drone they performs equally well and gives me back the money I’ve lost?
    what you’re saying does give me some comfort Russ, it’s just the idea that these companies and their politicians would have the gall to do something like this really ticks me off!

    • @markkempton4579
      @markkempton4579 Před měsícem

      It won't be a paperweight. The FCC isn't going to block the communication spectrum if they actually withdraw the license from DJI. Your drone will continue to work, especially if you keep it offline.

    I believe some of the bans were related to FCC indicating that no DJI drone could utilise communication frequencies to operate. So that would make it illegal for people to use DJI drones. I agree though, the ban doesn't make sense. Just political posturing... The political posturing goes away if they actually follow through.

    Another great video! Thanks for the info. Just for information sake, what if the ban succeeds? Would drone operators have to surrender their drones? If so the government needs to work out some kind of reimbursement option as I personally have quite a bit of money tied up in my drone and other DJI equipment.

    Russ, you are starting to talk me out of any level of concern. But, from a commercial standpoint, where do the images for photogrammetry or LiDAR get processed, on DJI servers. DJI Terra is on DJI servers and if the Chinese government "needs" copies, guess what, they get copies. I usually use Autel for commercial work and never login to the Autel servers, not required to fly, but I heard a recent post that Autel servers are in the US, not confirmed. I only own a P4P v2 DJI drone these days, but I think I was forced to login to the DJI server before I could take off, so I don't think casual or recreational DJI flyers are excluded. Maybe, the solution is to cut any connection to DJI servers for any DJI products and use North American based solutions only, similar to what Anzu has done. Not sure if DJI drones can fly without an internet connection. Good job on your video.

    Hi Russ! I think it's great that you are having a rational approach to that issue, and help to calm down some of your viewers! However, that drone ban frenzy, is not evidence based, it's purely political motivated xenophobia and financial interest, and actual technology has nothing to do with it.
    *People that are in a state of irrational fear, are rarely open to fact based information,* and that's the biggest danger to our industry!
    Heck, even CapCut has been mentioned by lawmakers for the chopping block, because they are owned by TikTok's parent company!

    Totally unrelated, Russ, but I have question I hope you or one of our other flyers can answer. I have a MavicAir 2, my second, actually. I just got it back from a maintenanace issue from DJI. I had a "module' issue with the RTH command. They sent me a different drone, which I discovered after checking S/N. It would not connect to controller so I called tech support. They (she) got me back in 'control' after a series of commands that I made on the controller. All is good in that area now. But, while on the line with her I asked if any future firmware updates for the Air2 would include RID. She said it was included in my replacement drone. Is that possible? How do I check for RID compliance with this drone?

    I firmly believe that near real time collection* of IP, router and other device ID, communications and grid data DOES take place to extent required by the source country. The size of the DJI market IS a huge part of the the concern. In fact, the CCP would be very foolish (they are not) just ignore DJI, no? HOWEVER, the "white listed" solutions you mentioned are very promising for any realtime collection. That said, it is what it is, and it is a wee bit late to fully address it, so you are probably right not to worry.
    * Collection is very possible anytime/every time you do firmware update of the apk - by technical necessity, it is up- and down-loading (you are indeed connecting to the "mothership").
