I was Atheist, big WASP fan, joined the military got out of music fighting a lot of battles, not overseas but here in America. Hardest one I am still fighting, what I was about to do to these people this song came on and brought me to my knees. it saved me, moreover saved those corrupt people, when you have nothing left to lose salvation comes to you in the most unlikely ways never even thought W.A.S.P (We are Saving People) would be the one to save me

If you like the passion in the vocals and solo guitar in this you are going to love The Crimson Idol by WASP! This track could almost be on that concept album.

    • @BlackieNuff
      @BlackieNuff Před 3 lety +2

There's definitely a lot of "cross-pollenation" of concepts between Idol and Golgotha (Miss You re-appeared on the new "Re-Idolized" recording of Crimson Idol). There's also a lot of of the same relativity between Idol and Still Not Black Enough.
Idol was based on Lawless' personal experiences, wrapped in (or hidden behind, Lawless might say) a conceptual story.
SNBE was the same collection of personal experiences of Lawless, but no pretense of a "concept album" just raw Lawless (rawless?).
Golgotha (and perhaps even some of Babylon) is more about Lawless' "return to religion", which is just more personal stuff.
That's why all the content sounds so interchangeable... cos it is, lol.

W.A.S.P. has been around since about 1982(?). They began as a very aggressive "shock rock" metal act, with lots of elements of violence, blood, gore, and sexualization in their live shows and especially their lyrical content. They got a little more commercial in 1986 while still maintaining their "obscene" content, so much so that Tipper Gore went after them (and other rock acts like them) that "glorified" sex and violence to such gratuitous degrees. The catalyst for her vendetta came after she heard her own daughter playing W.A.S.P.'s first single ANIMAL (released in 1983 ahead of the eponymous debut album released in September of 1984), a song whose tagline now infamous and notorious tagline was "I FUCK LIKE A BEAST!"... Her aim to abolish this kind of music failed but she managed to get albums containing "explicit content" to have their covers marred by a warning sticker ; the now-famous black & white "Parental Advisory : Explicit Content" sticker.
After 3 studio albums (1984's W.A.S.P., 1985's THE LAST COMMAND, 1986's INSIDE THE ELCTRIC CIRCUS) and a live effort (1987's LIVE... IN THE RAW), 1989 saw the band get a little more serious and somewhat political ; no more sawblade gauntlets and codpieces with exploding sparks, no more raw meat & blood thrown into the audience, no more "drinking" blood from a skull, no more "sacrificing" naked women shackled to a torture rack... Lawless & Co had evolved to more relevant topics, and the music was better for it.
THE HEADLESS CHILDREN in 1989, then a concept album in 1992 called THE CRIMSON IDOL (an almost autobiographical tale of the rise and fall of a rock idol), with a compilation album churned out in 1993, FIRST BLOOD... LAST CUTS, a title which suggested perhaps the band was on the decline and the way out... but no... 1995's STILL NOT BLACK ENOUGH made a quiet appearance, and this album was much more of a personal introspect of Lawless, which had many thematic ties and callbacks to THE CRIMSON IDOL. If TCI was an unofficial bio album, then SNBE was sort of an unofficial non-conceptual "sequel". I personally felt the band was at its absolute peak and it could only get better...
Until 1997... the release of KFD (KILL, FUCK, DIE) saw a complete (albeit temporary) return to all the blood and gore and assorted shock rock elements from their origins - and then some... They went MUCH darker. KFD actually disturbed my psyche so much I literally lost sleep for several nights (but I soon came to terms with it and now it;s one of my favorite albums - one of the best "anger soundtracks" you will ever find). Sadly, if the follow-up record (1999's HELLDORADO) was any indication, the band also returned to their debaucherous ways of drug use, as well. I should mention that a double-live album was released in between, 1998's DOUBLE LIVE ASSASSINS was a 2-disc, 100 minute live effort. Where LITR had the highlight of Lawless ripping on Tipper Gore and her "Washington Wives" to intro one of two previously unreleased songs (HARDER FASTER and THE MANIMAL), and an entertaining bit of "audience participation: during I Wanna Be Somebody, DLA had similar highlights, with Lawless sharing an anecdote about guitarist and "Mean Man" Chris Holmes getting arrested by the LAPD, and another amusing interlude during I Wanna Be Somebody, which Lawless called "confession", where he lashed out against all oppressors and general assholes of society, those people who try to keep you down and try to tell you what to do, with your life and in general.
The next live effort was in 2000, a "live webcast" of a performance in Los Angeles, which was recorded and released as both a DVD and a live album (deluxe CDs containing the bonus DVD), underwhelmingly and painfully obviously called, THE STING.
Then two of their BEST albums since THC, TCI, and SNBE were proffered : 2001's UNHOLY TERROR, and 2002's DYING FOR THE WORLD. I consider these albums two parts of a whole, cos the material is absolutely amazing. Back to their "current events and political commentary" focus, they covered more topics that most were too timid to do.
These were in fact followed by a two-part concept, THE NEON GOD, Part I was "THE RISE" and Part II was "THE DEMISE". Not nearly as good as the previous albums between 1989 and 2002, but not bad. This was perhaps the time Lawless began returning to his religious roots, as there is a lot of references and elements of God and religion in his liner notes, while the music tells of the corruption and perversion that goes on in the name of God (cults and cult leaders, abusive nuns, etc).
A couple of "minimalist" albums came out after, 2007's DOMINATOR and 2009's BABYLON. I call them "minimalist: cos these are the first albums since the early days that barely clocked in at 45 minutes of music, maybe closer to 40. A little disappointing considering the 50/60/70+ minute efforts since 1989. But still decent albums. DOMINATOR had more political themes, while BABYLON focused more on the religious and spiritual. Like UT and DFTW, I consider these two albums like 2 parts of a whole as well.
This was around the time Lawless' "return to his faith" started resulting in many popular songs being permanently CUT form the setlists of all live shows, including ANIMAL and CHAINSAW CHARLIE (and many others). The last time you will hear either of those on a live album is on THE STING. I am not sure what year/tour they were officially cut from the live shows that followed? At any rate, they were OUT.
Lawless explained in articles, and his own personal notes on the official website (W.A.S.P. Nation), at length his reasons for doing that. (I am personally disgusted and disappointed, and have but one more reason to hate and resent religion!)
And then came GOLGOTHA in 2015... the whole album is practically a concept album of Lawless' return to faith.
Not a bad album, musically anyway. But I suppose if I can "ignore" or "take with a grain of salt" all the deeply satanic and blasphemous lyrics of bands like Venom, I can do the same for W.A.S.P. new "religious rock" a la Stryper... just focus on the music. I consider this an extension of the previous two albums due to all the "similar" content.
2017 saw THE CRIMSON IDOL get a makeover, in the form of RE-IDOLIZED, which saw the original album completely re-recorded, with some tracks (like CHAINSAW CHARLIE) having their more crude lyrics altered (WEAK!!), some new songs added (including MISS YOU form the previous album GOLGOTHA), and an accompanying DVD. Lawless claims this is the way he "always wanted to do it".
And to my knowledge, that brings us to date.
By now you have probably already learned much of this yourself in your pursuit of W.A.S.P.'s past works, but if you have not yet explored too far, or at all, then I hope this diatribe of mine above is of help to you.
    :-)

I'm a lifelong musician and metalhead since about the late 70s and I was lost to alcohol, drugs and you name it. I've been a fan of WASP since before Blackie Lawless converted to Christianity. I am now a believer too. I've given all those things up. I hope I can live the rest of my life getting over my former self and forgiven by my Lord who died for me. I cry like a baby every time I hear this. I wish more bands would write this kind of material. We need it.
I've read my Bible. I honestly think that we have no real idea of the atrocities they committed on Him. We know about the scourging. The crown of thorns. The beatings with the reeds and rods. The slapping and spitting in His face. The lies they told on him. The crucifixion.
But I think it was all a hundred times worse than what we could ever imagine.
Please God, forgive my sins that helped to crucify Your blessed Son.
    Save me, I'm lost somehow.

Check out "My Godless Run" by WASP, It is about redemption. You will weep. This is not a religious rock band by far. They were the most outragious bands when they started but Blackie Lawless's song writing and recording techniques matured later, and his later songs really had depth. Check out the masterpiece "The Crimson Idol". "The Idol, The great misconception of me." The album is a rock opera about a rock star that finds out fame is an illusion. Autobiographical? Maybe

In the 80's and 90's they were a different band. They sang of sex and other worldly things. They have always been one of my favorite bands. Blackie's voice is very authentic and memorable. No one has a voice like his. 80's song should be Inside the Electric Circus. 90's is basically anything from The Idol or Headless Children. Those are the two most amazing albums from WASP in my opinion. You are about to journey down a rabbit hole you won't want to crawl out of with this band

This whole album as blackie put it to n the linear notes is to make you think as a Christian. Gologotha means place of the skull where Christ was crucified, I am sure blackie hopes this song and album brings people to Christ,

Music has always been important to me, to the point that I tend to either love it or hate it. One of the things that's bugged me to almost no end is the weak, easy, overly simplistic music that's associated with Christianity and Christian worship.
This song stands out as none of those things. I really wish music like this, music that not only has something deep and thoughtful to say, but that says it powerfully, was the rule instead of the unfortunate exception.

Yes, Golgotha is in the bible!! That's where Jesus was crucified at!! After Blackie's past, he supposedly was born again & chose to share this in his music!! I think it's cool, but it isn't the WASP I remember!!

in my thoughts, blackie has the most powerful and mostbeautiful voice on theplanet, you are a believer? say it loud and proud, i am unsure but, i have always said, if this so called holy wars that has been spoke about for many years comes to reality, even tho i have been called a devil worshiper, if the wars came true ,i would be by the big guys side if it was all true, the devil is a loser and he is my bitch, a wise man once said that and i think the same way too, i dont worship losers, i dont worship the big guy either but, if things came true, i know where i would be, so, if you have thoughts and beliefs, say them loud and proud and live by them, if anyone says anything different, then they are idiots, its about what makes yu happy and whole ,remember that
