It's not even funny how much I love this podcast! I think i have rewatched all the episodes at least once because it is so watchable!
Same!!!!
Thank you so much!! That makes my day!
That speckled yarn does not do justice to your pattern!
Agreed!
Totally agree! You just can't see it at all!
Agreed
Finally - someone else who does not enjoy musicals. I would rather have a root canal than sit through a musical. My friends all love them and get frustrated that I will not join in their excitement.
Thanks again for another great podcast.
Same!!! I just can do it!
I agree with your gut instinct on the marl... GORGEOUS fabric, but you lose the beauty of those mock cables. Perhaps a less-speckly marl, like two tones of the same color? Knitting the fingering version now and LOVING them- so addictive.
Right? You totally lose the pattern, but the fabric would be great on vanilla!
How could you not love the musical “The Music Man”?
Thank you for doing these podcasts. The knitting and sock content is awesome, but I appreciate your stories, tangents, and just overall presence the most. ❤️
Thank you so much!
Another great episode Summer! For that heavily speckled sock: I would say that if I could not see the cabled pattern in real life (doesn't matter to me for photos), then I wouldn't use that yarn. You're making me dream of getting some good solids so I can have a play! Right now I am working with those odd minis and random skeins in my stash (I mean, yarn collection 😉)...but still enjoying the process and working on the "right" fit for me (and my teen boys's..at least I can wear them after they outgrow them if they aren't manky 😂)
My "musical for people who don't like musicals" suggestion is The guy Who Didn't Like Musicals lol it's as sci-fi horror comedy that's super fun and I've gotten several people into musicals that way, and it's free to watch on youtube! highly recommend if you'd like to get into them but haven't enjoyed the ones you've seen so far
I just got your book and now that I’ve seen your tutorial on these socks I can’t wait to knit them!!
I’m like you, Summer. I don’t like musicals. My family thinks I’m weird, but I find them boring. I just purchased your Hibernal DK socks pattern and have never knit DK socks before. Also, really looking forward to receiving your book next week (Amazon)!!
Thankfully no one in my family likes musicals either, so they never try to make me get on board! 😂
I quit store bought socks completely in favor of wearing my vanilla hand knit socks. I wouldn’t shy away from wearing your hand knit socks a ton! They’re really not as fragile as we tend to think.
Summer - my customers are loving your book. They are telling me it’s like a master’s class on making socks..plus more! Looking forward to your Fiberside Chat!
Oh this makes my whole day!! That's exactly what I was going for with the book, so I'm relieved that customers are loving it!!! Thank you so much for this feedback!
I will say it again, I love to watch your vlogs! I broadcast to my TV and I let them run so while I am doing things you voice is chit chatting in the background, thanks to HD OLED I am familiar with with your pores and eyelashes 😂
I am telling there isn’t a video where I don’t relate or experience the exact same things like being bored with musicals and becoming emotionally exhausted when I have a double event day, ( a trip to the store counts as an event ) haha so I am done sounding like a crazee lady imagining we could be like sisters or at least besties agreeing with each other all day knitting socks and petting dogs, or in my case a chicken ..🤔 I guess that would be if you lived in NC or I in OK. 😂
I wish I had a sock yarn collection like yours. 😍 have a good week.
Totally agree on musicals. They were actually got a very high attention and popularity during depression time (1920s) as an easy to follow alternative to opera performances, as well as a great distraction from the very horrible economic conditions and overall life
When I Marl yarns for a DK knit, I tend to use a Vanilla unspeckled yarn with a speckled yarn, , that way the Speckles are not drowned out by the other yarn, unfortunately you are loosing the pattern and stitch definition with both of the speckled yarns you have used. Love the pattern it’s Gorgeous ❤
Love your Channel Summer, I totally feel you :D easily distracted, the need of adult bracelets, hating musicals and the over exitement of wool and color combos. 😅Looking forward to every new video which will come
I'm with you regarding musicals. That said, there are a few that I really, really do like. My number one favorite ever is "Across the Universe." "The Sound of Music" and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" round out the top three. I'm pretty sure there is no number 4. And if it's in black & white, I really won't sit for that. lol
Excellent podcast! Enjoy your book tour! Funny about the musicals. I’m not a huge fan, but I don’t actively dislike them. I feel like I’m the only knitter who does not enjoy gardening!
Always enjoy your podcasts! I agree with you - I'm not a fan of musicals in general. There are a few exceptions (Grease!) and I love music and dance, but most musicals just seem jarring when they suddenly break out in song and dance in the middle of a conversation! Love your new book - knitting my scrappy socks now!
So glad I heard about you, your podcast and your patterns. I really enjoyed my first episode and laughed out loud about your musicals quandary. I grew up singing and dancing and have also come to believe that musicals are first and foremost for the performers (and maybe their parents). I never go out of my way to see one and sometimes go out of my way not to, which I feel a bit bad about, if I know the performers. Enjoyed your energy and humor and appreciate your guidance. I look forward to resuming my sock knitting habit with you.
Oh my goodness - I really dislike musicals and Valentine's Day too! You are not alone! ❤
I would love to see you demo how you weave in ends as you go. On page 71 of your book, it looks like you have ends woven in both the old yarn and the new yarn. I think I know how to weave in the NEW yarn when you first pick it up , but the old yarn is the one I can't wrap my head around. Thank you in advance!
I only wear hand knit socks. Find commercial socks make my feet feel icky.
Love all your patterns.
I can't do commercial socks that aren't cotton! They make my feet feel icky too. But cotton ones I can stand for some reason.
Same no-thanks on musicals. A friend dragged me to Les Mis and I must have crossed and re-crossed my legs a hundred times. I could feel my Uber app empathizing in my bag.
Ok I'm going to start by saying that I love musicals. So I thought I would also be on board with opera. Wow was I wrong! Talk about all the singing interrupting the story 😅 and much as I love musicals, I totally get that they aren't everyone's brand of kitsch.
I was a kid, w/my mother we saw "Oklahoma". When Curley was riding his horse through the wheat fields signing away, I couldn't stop laughing over the obscurity of it. But really I love musicals, they're relaxing and lovely to listen to. This was a stellar podcast, again took notes! I agree w/you, be your own designer!
I am so excited to see an episode on DK socks! I am a huge fan of DK socks and I love that you created a pattern & showed a few different yarn options. These are all I knit for gifts especially! Great episode and P.S I don't like musicals either 🙃
Not sure if you have seen any newer musicals besides Hamilton but I just saw &Juliet and it was full of fun 90s/00s pop music. Hope they come out with a video of it eventually.
Love your podcasts, Summer. I really enjoy the great content and getting to know you a bit. Thank you!
Right there with you. I cannot sit through a musical. Friends think I am strange for not appreciating the art form but I don’t!
I'm so glad there are more of us!!
Thank you. I have been wanting to do a sock with Mohair and fingerweight yarn. The yarns are waiting in my stash.
Musicals - I like them but ‘Oklahoma!’ Is my least fav (moved to OKC 30 years ago from CA & felt like I had to hide my dirty little secret 😂). Bummed I’ll miss your book signing at Full Circle (RVing in AZ) but can’t wait to get your book when I get home. Just purchased your Knit Stars class!! Love your podcast & so glad you are back. You being you is the best ever - thank you for teaching me how to knit socks on CZcams, forever grateful ❤
I love your speckled yarn but it’s not doing your pattern justice, it’s a lovely pattern, I have a cardigan pattern with the mock cables up the fronts and down the sleeves. Thanks for another fab video 😊😊😊
Love the mock cable socks. And love the idea of using the mohair. I love the little space that you are filming in. Would you ever give us a bigger peek? I'm trying to find a small space to work in and yours is so fresh and cheerful.
Musicals….yeah, I like them! Chiming in on the marled yarn for Hibernal socks, that would be a NO from me. You can’t really see that gorgeous pattern. And I’m loving your videos, I look forward to Fridays!!! And most of important of all, I will get your book this week - eeek! Can’t wait to read it 😊
Question for the podcast: tell us the story behind your children’s names! I love unique names for children, my daughter has one!
I love that you do tutorials. I just bought your book on my Kindle and I can't wait to knit some of your patterns :)
You are so right about knitting socks and the reasons for knitting socks. I have made so many socks that I can do them almost in my sleep - I have socks on needles on my desk all the time and pick them up during long meetings to help me concentrate on the meeting. Knitting socks helps me focus! Also just downloaded your new pattern and can’t wait to start my dk socks!
I know what you mean about musicals … and I’m a musician! My daughter was telling me how windy it was in Tulsa on Thursday!
Summer, I also like long socks. My ankles get cold under my work desk & if I scrunch them down, I stay warm 😊 I just purchased 3 of your patterns, thanks for the coupon! 😀👍
Absolutely loving your podcasts. It's like having a friend without having to have a friend! The joys of being an introvert. I have pre-ordered your book and I'm impatiently waiting for it to be released in the UK! P. S. I don't enjoy musicals either. I love films and I love songs, but when they're combined it just jars my teeth 😂
I adore your podcast. You are so authentic and relatable. I cannot wait For the book to come. Your space is so happy, like all your socks.
Thank you so much!🥹🥹
I hope you have more podcasts as I have really enjoyed them! I love your new book!
I'm with you on musicals. I cringe when people spontaneously burst into song. I love this podcast and seeing all your fabulous socks!
Oh that's the WORST! I had a date spontaneously burst into song at a What-a-burger 24 years ago and I've never recovered from it 😂
I love the store bought vs hand knit socks convo. Maybe a future topic could be about adding elastic thread to socks. Have you tried it? Would you recommend etc. thanks!
Oh i am just starting knitting socks. I did two vanilla socks and i want to knit fun patterns... but now i learned that ita better to knit more basic socks😂...
I am so enjoying your podcasts! I had decided I wanted to try to become a sock knitter this year, and your tip to start by knitting lots of vanilla socks is so encouraging! Thanks so much!
New viewer here from Nova Scotia, Canada! I’m seeing a lot of people asking how they can make their sock toes more rounded instead of the usual sort of squared off Kitchener stitch toe. Also how to eliminate that dog ear at the end of the Kitchener stitching. Just an idea for future videos! Love your channel … keep on keepin’ on!
Just found your podcast as a result of the hype around your book. Such great reviews. I'm being good and putting it on my birthday list although I want to buy it now! Fabulous podcast. You are incredibly generous with information - how to do your rib stitch here and all the info about book publishing in your episode on that.
I 'm with you, I loathe musicals and Valentine's Day! I don't mind the individual songs; some of them are really goof. It's the format. You're following the story and then instead of the usual dialogue - like IRL - it's interrupted by singing and dancing. It's so false and unreal. I got tricked into going to a musical because I was told it was a play. It was a really horrible 90 mins. Pre-smart phone so nothing to do but sit and bear it😊b
I like a few musicals, like movie musicals. Wizard of Oz, Sound of Music, Mary Poppins, Willie Wonka. That is about it. Most of them grate on my nerves. I definitely couldn’t sit through a broadway musical.
I think any cabled pattern definitely pops with a light colored yarn. I have the Japanese cable pattern books and have done every one I have tried in white.
Have you watched the musical “Sweeny Todd”? Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter… it’s gruesomely brilliant! Tim Burton brilliance xx give it a go xx
You are right to be conflicted about the 2 marled skeins together. The second I looked at them, I felt sick at my stomach. Too much work to not see your beautiful stitch pattern. I say, FROG!
Summer, you’ve got to watch The Greatest Show on Earth…..the music is so beautiful.
Love the Hibernal pattern! I love that you did the tutorial for the mock cable! Thank you! ❤
Thank you very much Summer. This was such an interesting podcast. I can't wait to receive your book!
I go to musicals with friends that like them, but I've never really been in to them. That being said, I really liked Tina the Musical. That was good. Even though i dont care for Broadway musicals I do love Gilbert & Sullivan operattas!
Love the two yarns marled together but think that the beautiful pattern gets lost. Question.....what are your favorite shoes to wear with your socks? I've been knitting for over 15 years, but am just diving into the world of socks.
Summer I love your channel. I am so excited for your book next week. All your socks are so happy. I love your tips for sock knitting. It took awhile for me to know what really fits and what didn’t. Have fun with your book tour. How exciting ❤ safe travels
Thank you so much!❤
No I don’t like musicals; maybe for a few moments but my mind will wander and the musical interrupts my mind script….. also , a packed theater is very anxiety provoking to me …… I better be sitting in the aisle ; I will have pee maybe several times….. I will be very visually disturbing getting up and down and knowing no one else is doing this ; this will give me more anxiety……..two hours is too much sitting and my ADD will go into overdrive ; mind aerobics can be fatal sometimes. You are fantastic! We would be definitely be friends if we lived in the same area. Thanks for making me feel like I’m not alone in my uniqueness.
Elizabeth
Musicals would be fine if they’d cut the sound. I tried to watch Cats once and turned it off within 10 minutes. But…I do love your socks and podcasts and can’t wait for your book to be delivered on Wednesday.
J’adore ce podcast Summer ❤ thank you for being so clear. And now I will never be ashamed of knitting mere Vanilla socks! But will try DK with your new pattern as well (thanks for the coupon code on Ravelry!)
Hi Summer, I don't like musicals either. I agree with you that the speckled yarn over powers the pattern. Since I came across your sock patterns I've been dreaming socks! Can't wait to knit them from your patterns. From Bernadette
Haha, I love musicals, BUT, only in theaters! Any theater production, high school, community, Broadway… is better than a movie musical. Because of course in real life nobody bursts out into song and dance. But on a stage with a set and costumes it makes sense. In a movie they don’t usually use a set and you expect a degree of realism so there's a weird disconnect. My opinion only of course! 😊
Love your videos. Also definitely not a musical fan, so you are not alone.
Lmao!!! Surrey with the fringe on top.......😂😂😂😂😂😂 I am a non-musical person too!
Great podcast!!! I so enjoy your podcasts and LOVE the DK Hibernal socks!! I appreciate all sock knitting tips and your socks are always so beautiful. Your tension on your socks is so lovely. I aspire to have my socks look that smooth and even. My socks are functional, but always seem to have 1 or 2 errors in each pair. I know, I know, knit a bunch of vanilla socks!! Off to continue my current sock. Thanks again for a fun podcast. Best of luck with your book tour and I am eagerly awaiting my copy.
I actually hate musicals but I just couldn’t put my finger on why..well thank you for bringing some closure into my life 🤣🤣 I can’t stand them 🤣 you are not alone lol
Hi Summer! Love the podcast videos!! I noticed when you showed the tutorial for the mock cable that your yarn over is wrapped in the opposite direction to how you wrap for a knit stitch (I think, if I saw it right) but if that’s the case when you come to that yarn over on the next row won’t it be sorta twisted? Do you then knit through the back to orient it correctly or do you intentionally knit that way? Maybe I’m overthinking this haha but I made your original hibernal socks last year and loved them and am wondering if I accidentally did something slightly different! Thanks!
I thought the same thing. 😊
I also was surprised with the direction oft the yarn over 🤔 is it something you always do Summer ? Any particular reason? I am curious! I also love this mock cable and used it in one if my designs 😊 Your DK Hibernal socks look amazing! And your episode was great, as always!
Oh I LLOOOOVVEEE musicals, Hamilton was my second (Color Purple being the 1st) in person one and I was mesmerized…..my father on the other hand could care less for all the “hoop lop” 😂.
I agree with you on the speckled socks..I think the pattern is getting swallowed up. Beautiful color combo tho.
With you friend on the musicals- not my cup of tea. Hope to see you in Mckinney with your books tour. Enjoy your content and I am now obsessed with socks!!!!
Congratulations on your book tour! That's so exciting. If I still lived in TX, I'd come to see you.
Thank you so much for the tutorial on how to do moc cables. The yarn is stunning but I couldn't even see the cables in it. Maybe it will be magic, and the cables will stand out after knitting more, but right now, they aren't standing out.
Do you know how to knit toe socks?
Happy knitting 💚🧶💚
Also the marled yarn would be better on vanilla socks. You can't see the pretty mock cables.
I used to like musicals but as I’ve gotten older they get on my nerves!
The yarn you are holding together is beautiful, but it is hard to see the mock cables.
I’m loving your podcast♥️♥️
Im not a huge musicala fan but Oklahoma is my favorite. I hate Valentine's Day too!
I love the mock cable pattern, but the yarn is meant for something else. It hides the lovely pattern. (gently said)
Your book and podcast got a mention on knit together with Kim and jonna, episode 24
Your dog’s demo was the best! 😂❤ … I’m looking forward to knitting those dk hibernal socks
Beesly saw her moment to become famous and took it! 😂
I am maki g the thick socks from your book. No had to double the length of the heel flap but I love it! Making a pair for my sister now.
Thank you for your sock advice…I love that you said learn what you love! It can be hard to feel it out on your own with so much input from Instagram, CZcams etc. it’s so nice to hear do what you love, what colors you love.
I love love love musical theater! But it’s ok that you don’t. 😀 I am starting the new sock pattern already!
I do love musicals! And it is ok that not everyone does. For me, music in general is a big source of emotion, and even more so when I watch a musical. I FEEL the emotion of the singer and the song. I am not a crier, but I CRY at almost every musical whether happy, or sad! I tell you this not to convince you to love them, but to tell you what it does for some people.
I totally get that! I love music so much, just weirdly not the combination of music in a play 😂. But I wish I did!
The speckled yarn is gorgeous, however the mock cable is completely lost with it. Have been on the fence about trying mohair in my socks but I think I will give it a shot.
I cannot wait for my book to arrive. You have reignited my love of knitting socks and I so appreciate that. As an eighties girl myself I would suggest the musical Xanadu! Roller skating, mythology and ELO songs. It’s super fun live when people actually get up and dance like it’s a concert. Looking forward to to future episodes.
Just found your channel/podcast a few weeks ago. I got your book yesterday and plan to read thru this weekend. I saw one musical when I was younger. Musicals and 'the theater' (insert snob voice) aren't for me. The Sound of music is a good movie. Hey ya gotta sing thru the war! 😉
You have really found your niche in life, Summer! You're so good at all of this stuff. Your episodes are so enjoyable, fun, informative! I don't want your videos to end! Thanks for the spectacular content!
Thank you so much for such great feedback!!❤
hi i always enjoy watching you i am a new knitter
I live in my woolly socks! It’s so damp here that it’s so comfy! And if it’s damaged it’s ok I can treat myself with a new pattern or a new book of socks ❤
Oooo I'm loving this "couch nest" talk. I love being in a couch nest. Just glad you came up with a name for it ☺️
The Couch Nest is the best!!!
I think two speckled yarns held together isn’t working either the pattern, but holding a speckled and a neutral together would look more like a tweed and would allow the pattern to shine. Knitting the original Hibernian socks now - love the pattern!
Summer, love your podcasts so much! If you don't like musicals give Funny Girl (with Barbra Streisand) and Fiddler on the Roof a try (if you haven't already) My husband hates musicals but those two he loves. Looking forward to getting the new book next week. Thanks
Hey Summer, pretty new sock knitter here. (I’ve made 3 pairs so far, have 4 & 5 on the hook as I type). Saw your name on the video and was thrilled to see you are the author of the sock book I just bought!!!!! Watching Episode 1 of the podcast and loving it!
My question: my last pair came out in two different sizes 🙁, same set up etc, but after blocking I can see so many issues. Any hints? TIA
Fear not - you are not alone in not liking musicals!! I feel I should like them but then the singing starts and…….nope, no thank you, stop 😂😂 I took my daughter (years ago now) to see Aladdin in the West End and ina show, with all the stage distractions I don’t mind it but not my first choice. That aside, loving the podcasts and looking forward to the book being out. Congratulations 🎉
I just discovered your CZcams channel thanks to Knit Together with Kim and Jonna. I’ve been following you on Instagram for a long time. I love your sock designs.
I binge watched all of your videos and loved knitting along as you laughed and smiled your way through each episode. You sure do not act like an introvert in front of the camera. 😊
I am browsing through your delightful book on my iPad right now. It’s a snow day here in southern Lancaster County, PA - the perfect day to receive a new knitting book.
Like you, I love to read and I love to knit but I can’t do them together. I’m also a visual learner so audio books aren’t my jam. And I also get motion sickness easily so reading and knitting just won’t gel. The read vs. knit tug of war is very real. Sometimes I’ll knit a row or two (or ten) then read a chapter. Stop. Repeat.
Congratulations on your book release and happy knitting!
Love your weekly videos, thank you Summer❤.
I'm glad you brought up the ethical side of store bought socks, or lack thereof! I began my knitting journey as a hobby but now I mostly knit to cover my garment needs using ethically produced fibers 😊
It's overwhelming trying to live life in an ethical way! So much of our goods and services are produced by people we'll never see.
@summerleedesignco.6471
It sure can be! Just trying to do my fair share here and there.
Thank you so much for everything you teach us. You're very talented!
Love the new DK Hibernal pattern. I love the two yarns you are using but you definitely cannot see the pattern you are working.
If you want a subtle texture sock then go for it in the speckles. But if the stitch pattern is what you like best then stick to the solids. I really like it in your brown sample.
Normally I actually like marled or variegated yarns with texture, but I don’t know, in this case I feel like it’s just too much. I definitely think that fabric would look way better in something a little more vanilla, or stripey.
Love your podcast and your dog is so cute❤❤❤!!!
I enjoy your podcast as it is so practical and informative. Your color combinations are such an inspiration. Your color combination in the speckle didn’t do your pattern justice. Oh, and by the way, you earrings are fantastic.
Great podcast! I’ve just ordered your book ❤
