That is heartbreaking to me,cause in the end,she couldn't do it and she stayed in this horrible relationship. This song shows pretty real life relationships. It's incredibly sad but...really touching.
Actually, it’s more about the anxiety of “does he really love me?” rather than a horrible relationship. Taylor wrote this song inspired by “Rebecca” by Daphne Du Maurier, which revolves around a main character suffering from extreme anxiety and wondering every single day if she’s “enough” for the man she married. It’s a great book, one of my favorites, I recommend it. :)

I might agree with Evermore but not with Folklore. That album brought a completely new wave of fans. It became one of her most critically acclaimed and admired works she's ever done. So many people that once underestimated her realized how wrong they were. It won AOTY and it marked the beginning of Taylor's dominance on Spotify. It's also gonna be at top 5 on Billboard 200 this week. Her 3rd highest charting album right after her latest 2 albums (1989 TV+Midnights).Folklore received and keeps receiving all of its flowers by both fans and critics. Evermore, on the other hand, while a lyrical masterpiece and on par with Folklore, lived quite in Folklore's shadow. It came out just a few months after it and it was named its sister. Therefore , it didn't get its chance to shine as an independent body of work and then Fearless TV followed. For the kind of beautiful lyrics and songs it has, it should definitely be more celebrated.
I take "use my best colours for your portrait" as she makes him out to be the best she can to others the way we lie to our friends so they don't hate the person we've convinced ourselves that we love.
No one deserves to be in the relationship such as this, but theres so much people through it. They dependent to their spouse economically, and hang on the past romanticism, sad reality
@@aratayuki6238 "they dependent to their spouse economically" my mom pays all my father bills and still does it, he doesn't his food on his own plate literally. please don't say this kind of thing, it makes it sound like we are just doing it for money because we can't live without them and honestly it's pretty cruel. it's much more than that, unless you've been there don't say these things and even if you did don't generalize it.
This song sounds like a cycle of a woman's mind, she starts out feeling sad, because her love is only tolerated. She knows all too well that if she leaves, their relationship will be in ruins, but if she stays, she will be in ruins. Then she gets brave enough to say, 'I'm leaving, goodbye.' But ultimately at the end of the day, she can't do it. She goes back to sitting and watching him, hoping one day, he will realize how much she loves him. She does not want to give up just yet.
This song is painful. I was married 13 years to my high school sweetheart and I remember listening to this song the first time and it was the "theme" song to my life. Begging for attention, time, acknowledgment. Being so excited to see and spend time with him and head over heels in love after all those years regardless of how he treated me and knowing it wasnt the same for him. That he was tolerating me. I felt like I was planning and looking forward to our future while everything he planned was just him. From what he did in his free time to future plans. 13 years down the drain. He cheated, moved out, married the woman he cheated on me with, moved 12 hours away, and sees our 13 year old son a few times a year. Even though I am happier now than I have ever been, this song brings up so many emotions and bad memories. I will never let another person make me feel that way again.
As an adopted child who has lost her birth parents by abandonment and adoptive parents due to their abusive problems, this really hit me. Always felt like I took too much space and time. No matter how beautiful portrait I drew of them to others it didn't matter. I gained the weight of them and lost it. I feel unwanted and just tolerated in so many ways. 💔
AS SHE SHOULD hahaha love her so much ! 💜 btw i make videos on films! i recently made one on ‘Her’ and ‘Queens Gambit’! if you’re interested, please check it out! heart ❤️
The fact that the song begins and ends with the words "I sit and watch you" shows how the narrator is contemplating the relationship, while actually breaking free is painfully real.
While this song may be fictional, I think it hits very different now that "You're Losing Me" has come out. I feel like this song has become even sadder now.
This song has made me realise that you should NEVER settle for anything less in love. You give all because you love someone in the way that you should expect everything from someone who claims that they love you.
So true I’m just figuring this all out and have barely been away for a week. And I’m realizing he doesn’t love me the way he said and I’m not ok with it and I don’t want to settle
Maturing is realizing that some friendships can feel like this song. You give all but end up walking behind them trying to fit in and listening to their conversations
I know this song is about a woman and her husband...but I feel like it applies to everyone who loves, who loves so deeply and greatly, who love with everything they have, who give everything they have to those who they love yet watch as they receive nothing in return. It’s about the battle in our minds, the battle of wether or not we’re making it up and it’s all inside our heads or if it really is real. But we still continue to give our all, not because we’re to stubborn to belive that it’s real but because we hope one day that one person will come and celebrate our love....
i’m going through this right now, like i will listen to my friends talk about something that i’m not as interested in and still listen but if i talk about my stuff i’m ignored, or if i made a mistake i’m scolded and yelled at but if someone makes a mistake i forgive them, and i feel as tho the people who give the love and respect that they do, those people lose their own and i’m one of them
I agree, and the first time I heard it I actually pictured a father/daughter relationship. Seems like she's vying for love and attention from someone she thinks so highly of. She puts this person up on a pedestal and makes them sound very heroic, like a dad figure. She paints such a positive picture of this person, yet they merely tolerate her love and praise for them. Could be some kind of paternal relationship. Just a thought!
the way she starts the song with ''i sit and watch u'' and ends it with ''i sit and watch u'' shows how this song represents the thoughts of the narrator and what she wished she could do
@@brookealexis5262 gold rush too starts and ends with eyes like sinking ships on water, i almost jump in” meaning it is endless loop of again reminding her that she cannot be with that person but cannot resist looking away from that person’s beauty again no matter the bad consequences
Those who say this women isn’t a true artist need to listen to her songs. Not just the ones on the radio, but these songs. The lyrics hit so hard all of lyrics do.
The lyrics go on as a loop, that's very phenomenal from her to do. Sometimes you recognize that your love is being taken for granted or you are treated like shit in the relationship, but you can't break free and end it because you have nowhere else to go to. She is just so aware of her situation but at the end, she chooses to stay.
Like I feel like she somehow has a window into MY life, that’s how much I relate! But that’s really the beauty of her writing, to be able to connect so well. Ugh, I love her.
This song became therapy for me. I stayed in a relationship for way too long..... not that it was horribly bad, but more that it had become nothing. I finally had the courage to move on, and found in that time, I do have something to offer someone. That my love and time could be cherished by someone. It took me a long time to be able to sing that bridge without breaking down into tears because it hit so hard that I had done exactly what she sang.....I broke free and left us in ruins, took the dagger in me and removed, had gained the weight of him then lost it, I DID THAT. In return, I have gained a love, acceptance, someone who does cherish me and who will listen when we're having a conversation. I related so much to this woman in this song and would encourage anyone, who is feeling the way this woman is in their own relationship, to get up and move on. It will be difficult but the reward is amazing.
I just finished watching The Crown and somehow this reminded me of Prince Charles and Princess Diana's story, which we know how tragic and toxic it is like how you described it. I wonder tho 🤡🤡🤡🤡 maybe Taylor watched The Crown and write a song about it hahaha🤡🤡🤡.
Normal people: I made you my priority and you're just making me an option Taylor: "I made you my temple, my mural, my sky. Now I'm begging for footnotes in the story of your life"
This is how being with someone with a dismissive avoidant attachment will lead you to feeling; in the beginning they’re crazy about you but a year later you feel tolerated even after you’ve made every effort and loved them, they resent you for your needs. You overexert yourself emotionally, carry all of the emotional weight of conflict management, give them your best, and they just sit there stonewalling. Played this song while taking a bath at his home knowing we would be broken up soon. There’s something hauntingly beautiful about that; the person in the next room over and they have not the slightest grasp of the pain they’re inflicting with their walls up. 💔

The writing is exquisite . Taylor’s songwriting is at its peak right now . I want her to write a novel I reckon the prose would be so lyrical and stunning .
It really is quite nice and experimental of her. I've never heard her write a song in 5/4 time (though "Closure" also is), but this one could technically be in 5/8 time, but either way 5 beats in a measure is always tricky to make sound natural and she did it. The first 4 notes of the piano being dotted quarter notes and the next being on the actual beat is very misleading and creative. & it's also quite an emotional song on top of the technical side of things. I love the way the end of each verse goes perfectly back into the chorus.

This may be one the the best songs Taylor has ever written... and that’s saying something as she’s a prolific songwriter as it is. This song is so beautifully haunting. The lyrics in the bridge are just incredible
This hurts me most from a friendship perspective. Giving everything and just being tolerated instead of loved back. One of Taylor’s best in my opinion ❤
Anyone else think when she says "believe me I can do it" she's really trying to convince herself she can do it and not actually him? That's how I hear it.

This song feels like the inner thoughts of a woman who subtly wants to end her unhealthy relationship with a guy who treats her like shit, but she kinda knows that she's too weak to actually break up with him. That's why the last phrase is "I sit and watch you" because no matter how much she wants to end it, she can never bring herself to actually do it, so she just ends up tolerating it. edit: I know that the song is pretty clear with its lyrics that it is the guy tolerating the girl, I was just kinda playing with my words 😅 like maybe, they're both tolerating each other. The guy tolerates her love, while the girl tolerates the guy who is tolerating her love. And to all the people in the comment section saying that they're going through this exact same situation, I hope you all find the courage and strength to leave and free yourselves from these toxic and unhealthy relationships. I know its hard and it takes time, but I know you will all get there soon. And to the people who've gone through this situation, I hope you all heal from these toxic relationships. One day, you will all find someone who will not anymore tolerate your love, but someone who is wholeheartedly willing to celebrate your love. ❤️

Nobody should ever have to endure a relationship where they are tolerated.
currently what i feel like i’m going through. yay!

‘all too well’ saw what u did there
This song is painful.
Sending you warm hugs with consent. That must have been really tough. 😢

HAHAHA this is funny but straight fact!
The fact that the song begins and ends with the words "I sit and watch you" shows how the narrator is contemplating the relationship, while actually breaking free is painfully real.
While this song may be fictional, I think it hits very different now that "You're Losing Me" has come out. I feel like this song has become even sadder now.
And it’s way sadder than ‘you’re losing me’ I never for once believed this song was fictional. This is real life
Its not fictional
She wrote it about john mayef i guess , no ?
This song sounds like what hurt feels like. No one translates an emotion into a song better than Taylor Swift
She's literally an emotion translator. The way she knows her emotions enough to put it into lyrics.

THIS
I know this song is about a woman and her husband...but I feel like it applies to everyone who loves, who loves so deeply and greatly, who love with everything they have, who give everything they have to those who they love yet watch as they receive nothing in return. It’s about the battle in our minds, the battle of wether or not we’re making it up and it’s all inside our heads or if it really is real. But we still continue to give our all, not because we’re to stubborn to belive that it’s real but because we hope one day that one person will come and celebrate our love....
this comment hurt me so much cuz I’ve been there before :(
i’m going through this right now, like i will listen to my friends talk about something that i’m not as interested in and still listen but if i talk about my stuff i’m ignored, or if i made a mistake i’m scolded and yelled at but if someone makes a mistake i forgive them, and i feel as tho the people who give the love and respect that they do, those people lose their own and i’m one of them
Yes all that I am going through!
Describes any relationship with a toxic narcissist. Leaving is the only option.
Just a thought!
the way she starts the song with ''i sit and watch u'' and ends it with ''i sit and watch u'' shows how this song represents the thoughts of the narrator and what she wished she could do
…or that she has all of these feelings inside, but she hasn’t gone anywhere because she is still sitting there watching him.

When i heard folklore, i thought her lyricism couldn't get any better but she proved me wrong with evermore. Taylor's artistry is limitless.
