    Great video, Bryan! I already had an EXO swing base I bought for my Bronco Sport and haven't hooked it up to my Model Y yet. Appreciate the tips on flipping the threaded piece inside the swing base and buying a battery-powered right angle ratchet. Those will save me a lot of time.
    It's nice that the license plate placement is high enough on the Model Y that Yakima's optional plate and light kit isn't necessary. I've had very good experiences with this hitch mounted box and always thought it would be a good fit for the type of trips you do, so I'm glad it seems to be working well for you.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Před rokem

      Thanks so much, John! Yeah it sits low enough and has a nice low-profile too so doesn't block the license plate or too much of the camera on the Model Y. I've been loving it so far 👍🏻 Glad the tips about how to best hook it up came in handy too. Will save everyone a ton of time for sure. I'll also probably use mine with a Sprinter van as I plan to get one for more off-roading adventures and will add a little extra cargo space as well when needed.

    Just wanted to add a note that I attempted a similar install using the Milwaukee M12 ratchet and wasn't thrilled with the performance. It didn't feel like it was getting the bolt very tight, although there wasn't much slop left in the swingbase. I did see the m12 ratchet was only rated to do 35 ft lbs, where yakima recommends 100Nm of torque, or around 73 ft lbs, double that of the M12 ratchets rating. I ended up using a normal 3/8" drive ratchet and it seemed to work fine. I did use a torque wrench to get it up to 73 ft lbs and it had a lot of room to go from what the M12 could do. In the end I returned the M12 ratchet and will just use a combination of 3/8" breaker bar, ratchet, and torque wrench as needed.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Před rokem

      Thanks for the update 👍🏻 The one I use is rated for 55 ft lbs and I can assure you mine is super tight with zero wiggle and hasn't moved in months, but always good info in case someone uses the same ratchet you did and feels it's not getting quite tight enough. Appreciate the comment. 😀

    Super video. When I went to buy this exact set up for my MY, the dealer showed me why they could not install EXO accessories. They were trying to put bolt in from the left saying this was design flaw of
    Tesla hitch. Morons! Guess they didn't want the sale that bad.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Před rokem +2

      Yep. I think I commented to you about week ago I was pretty sure they were wrong even on new Model Y's. You just have to move that little piece inside the Yakima hitch to the other side which takes 30 seconds (there's directions inside) and then put the bolt in from the right side which is the one with the extra room. Btw the system comes with the lock. Glad the review was helpful 😀

    Great video as usual. If you’re considering going back to a roof box, take a look at the Inno wedge and wedge plus. They are a bit smaller than Yakima/Thule boxes, but are better made (in Japan)and more aerodynamic. I believe REI can get them as well.

      Not sure which mattress you saw me use last, but I upgraded to the EXPED MegaMat Auto. It's just as comfortable as the one I did a review on this summer which was one of the most comfortable I've used, yet it rolls up tight enough to fit even in the frunk. Mattress for Model Y: alnk.to/aLF4bo4
      I'll have a review on it up in the next couple weeks and actually compare it to the last one. Both are super comfy, but this one feels higher quality, I've talked to the team at EXPED and they offer great support, they're also in stores nationwide like REI and most importantly it stores away in a compact way.

    Thanks Bryan! I have been waiting for this review. Thanks for doing all the math for us on the weight. I was not aware that the hitch could only handle 160 lbs and only about 70 lbs once you have the EXO on. Great info! I was wondering why you did not have the 2nd level on it. Good call on the Kobalt too. Did you happen to try a socket wrench? Curious.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Před rokem +3

      No problem. Yeah I was a little disappointed that you can't put the full 350 lbs tongue weight, but I guess that's universal for vehicles. I believe it has something to do with torque as weight hanging even a little away from the vehicle creates more pressure than a trailer. Yep, and that's why I didn't put a second level. I am now working with one of the top bike/e-bike manufacturers and had planned to put the EXO bike rack up there, but won't work with the weight. For what I'm currently doing it works great.
      As for the wrench. Yes, I did try a socket wrench and because you have no room to move it, it's not possible. Just like the regular wrench, you can move it about a half an inch. It would literally take hours. I honestly would have returned it if I didn't get the Kobalt. Now it all works great for my needs 😀 Thanks for watching!

    BRYAN⁉: Recently purchased a Model X so I presume I could go much heavier at the tongue weight is 500Lbs.... What additional accessories beyond the gear-box would you recommend ⁉ that I consider, obviously a bike rack, but wondered what else ? Many thanks for all your great videos...

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Před rokem +3

      Actually less with a Model X. Towing capacity is higher, but unfortunately tongue weight isn't the same as vertical weight for things like cargo boxes and bike racks. The Model Y for instance has a tongue weight of 350lbs, but you can actually only use 160lbs of that for things like cargo boxes and bike racks as due to how the weight is distributed as there is torque (a cargo box sits higher up and away from the hitch so it creates torque).
      The Model X for instance has even less vertical weight at 120lbs limit for accessories like cargo boxes and bike racks due to its stock Bosal receiver design. You have to include the weight of the hitch, swing arm like the Yakima EXO Swingbase as well as the gearbox to get your true weight allowed: www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modelx/en_us/GUID-7A684E2F-D43E-4A0E-AD21-811B04CE53BB.html#:~:text=The%20Model%20X%20towing%20package,bikes%20on%20an%20accessory%20rack.
      On the Model X for instance if you get the same Yakima Gearbox and Swingbase like I did, you're probably only looking at 30lbs of cargo inside the box. 😳 I only have 70lbs available to me which is why I use it for things like tents, chairs, fishing poles, clothes, cooking gear... things that take up a lot of room, but aren't real heavy. I'm also unable to put the bike rack extension onto it as it would be way over the limit.
      This is definitely a weak point of Tesla's unfortunately.
      As for other accessories to recommend... what exactly are you looking to do? Camp, bike trips? Let me know and I'll try to point you in the right direction. You can also check out my Camping section and/or Reviews section of videos on my main channel page.
      Hope that helps!

    Hey Bryan, why do you say it's limited to around 70 lbs cargo weight? The Model Y tow hitch is rated at 350 lbs tongue weight capacity and the swingarm and box are only around 100 lbs. Shouldn't that mean it can handle a bit more than the Yakima rated 100 lbs per the website ("100lb gear weight limit when mounted on EXO SwingBase")?

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Hi Nate - Tongue weight for towing a trailer is completely different than vertical weight from a cargo box or bike rack. Due to the way weight is distributed with torque the limit is much less. Here's a section from Tesla's website explaining it: www.tesla.com/ownersmanual/modely/en_us/GUID-F5C80FF5-8DE3-4750-8BAF-0DCC0CFA0C5C.html#:~:text=by%20the%20warranty.-,Carrying%20Accessories,maximum%20weight%20is%20not%20exceeded.
      Carrying Accessories
      The hitch receiver is designed to support vertical loads up to 160 lbs (72 kg). When carrying bicycles, skis, or other items on the Model Y hitch, always check to ensure that the maximum weight is not exceeded. When calculating weight, remember to include the weight of the accessory carrier. For example, assuming the carrier weighs 40 lbs (18 kg), the weight threshold is sufficient for carrying two bicycles weighing approximately 60 lbs (27 kg) each, or four items weighing approximately 30 lbs (14 kg) each.
      Hope that helps clear things up 😀

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Před rokem

      Thanks 😀 Most hitch cargo boxes I've seen are a bit higher so they would block the rear-view camera. This one is pretty low-profile and sits low so as you can see at the end of the video where I show backing up into a Supercharger, you can still see well.
      That also bodes well for aerodynamics. It took me about 2-3 times to get used to backing into Superchargers with it, but now it's easy. I do still occasionally get out as I get close just to double check to make sure what objects are back there as every Supercharger landscape is slightly different. Some have bushes or signs etc, but I've been to dozens with it and no issues charging.
      Most you can back up pretty much just as far as normal so the charging cable can always reach. I do tend to use the side mirrors to help in lining things up a bit more compared to the backup camera on screen. A little practice and it's easy 👍🏻
      Oh and if you check out some of my most recent travel videos you'll see me pulling into charging stations.

      Mine hasn't leaked once. I've been through some nasty storms (a couple videos coming up soon show that) and never a drop inside. As for any tips... make sure to have the right angle power tool I show in the video if you plan to remove it and put it back on/off otherwise it's virtually impossible to do due to the recessed nature of the rear hitch on a Model Y. If you're not using it on a Tesla that won't matter as much as you'll likely have better access where the supplied wrenches would work. Otherwise, don't overload it as it'll make the car sway a bit more. With a Tesla Model Y you only have about 70 lbs to use for cargo. I've loved mine and find it very versatile. 👍🏻

      The question about supercharging is spot on. I had one situation last winter where a pull through spot wasn’t plowed so I had to back in to another nearby spot. But after a couple times, it’s pretty simple. I just get out of the car once or twice to make sure I’m not going to hit anything and it’s fairly intuitive. However, either the specs are wrong or contractors mess up when they build out because sometimes they put the red parking sign too close to the curb, making it impossible to back up close enough. So far I’ve experienced Montana to be the worst, but I’ve always been lucky with no crowds and been able to just park parallel to the curb to charge with no other cars charging nearby.
      Although lately, I’ve noticed non-Tesla‘s charging so I’m a little nervous about that going forward when I travel with the cargo box.
