Costs of Maserati ownership and fixing parking sensors Project Maserati Part 13

  • In this video I look at parking sensors again and get them fully fixed, provide an update on the Oil Accumulator (pre-oiler) and its effect on variator noise. Then I look at next jobs and try to take a full and realistic view on costs of repair, maintenance and ownership of this Italian car with its shared parts bin with Ferrari (the Ferrari badged version of shared parts are cheaper...).

    Great Honest review.
    I've been on the spanners for 46 years and they've taken me around the World from Ford to Maserati with others in between.
    It's the satisfaction of the results I achieve that keep me going ever since I was a boy working in my father's garage.

    Any idiot can buy a good well-maintained car... but it takes a complete lunatic to buy an overly complicated car that needs work... and I can respect that.. (I was able to follow along after I figured out what an "odor-meter" was.) Cheers from the shed

      Exactly and greetings fellow lunatic! I cannot pronounce odometer. Fortunately there is no odour meter on the car…

    Hello, good to see you again. Everyone always says buy the best example of what you can afford...we do...lol 😆. I think it's in some of our blood or DNA to learn and fix. Thanks for sharing your work on the Maserati. I still am going to attempt to do the oil accumulator on my QP and buy more time..lol.
    Cheers

      Thanks very much. The oil accumulator has worked well and when the car starts and revs to 1800 rpm before dropping to 12-1500 rpm, it is nice to know that it already had oil pressure. I do think the harsh cold start cycle is part of the cause of the variator wear - that and people revving the car from cold to show everyone how cool it sounds…

    When you say “I kinda enjoy it … some of the time” (re all of the effort/time involved) … I think you actually enjoy it more than that (I hope you do). But YES, the satisfaction ‘you’ must feel after you complete the job (and the pride) must be immense when you get behind the wheel and drive the car. I get that after a ‘simple’ task … like replacing a single parking sensor (with help from a friendly forum member 😉) !! MEGA impressed by yr efforts and SUCCESS. Thanks for sharing … really enjoy watching and look fwd to the next vid 👍

      Thanks very much, yes I do enjoy it mostly! There are times though… When I did that piece, I had just done a bit of welding and burnt a perfect hole in the steering gaitor. Another job on the list.

    great video series, you will never forget that Maserati, for good and for bad... i own 2008 one with 40.000km on the ODO, mint condition, and i still don't have the gut's to DIY it. BTW i managed to find non original upper control arms in Ebay, and they are very good, my friend runs his car on them. front brake pads? BMW E38 is the exact same and cost 10% from the original ones.

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Thanks very much. I am looking at those control arms, it will probably be my option if the ball joints are bad as spending £2200 on new arms, hubs etc would just be too painful! I have stuck new bushes this last week and they seem to be good, but I think next time I would use the same bushes in the front part of the arm as the rear part of the arm as those front bushes are just so weak.

  • @RR-ev3pi
    @RR-ev3pi Před 2 měsíci +1

    My lower bushings in the rear were making loud squeek noises when driving over speedbumps 😅

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream  Před 2 měsíci

      Yes, mine are okay, but I am now getting an occasional knock on the rear which must be anti roll bar tie rod. I think the hole it bolts into is enlarged. I am going to bush it with a bit of stainless tube.

    are you a genius? I'm currently in Japan trying to fix a strange noise in my variator.

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream  Před měsícem

      No genius here! Just too poor to pay anyone else and too stupid to quit! Must be nice being in Japan. If yours has an engine number earlier than 148697, then that will be the weaker variators like mine. The accumulator does get round the issue, but the proper fix is new variators and then you might as well do timing chains, solenoids etc. I will do mine in a year or two when I have time and money.

    In the intro, that either sounds like an automatic, or you do some smooth gear changes.

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream  Před 2 měsíci

      Well I would love to say it’s my gearchanges, but no automatic with flappy paddles on the steering wheel. The only other option was an F1 gearbox with clutch and robotic changes. They can cost a lot when the clutch goes…

    • @RachaelSA
      @RachaelSA Před 2 měsíci

      @@SailingSVPipedream I'm not a fan of automatics, but my brother lent me a V6 Alfa 147 GTA for a few months, and that was auto/semi-auto, with the flappy paddles or you could change gears by pushing the gear lever up and down, like a motorbike but with out a clutch, and it was nice, very very nice. I loved that car.

    I drive a Hyundai Getz, because I'm not logical, and the money I save on fuel and spares gets spent on V8's and 2 stroke 250cc bikes.

      Yes, people at work have new boring cars and look down on my trusty Volvo, then they look confused when I take Maserati or bike. Sometimes I point out to them that their new car costs more than my Volvo, Maserati, Harley and Ford Model T are all worth added together!
      I do like a 250cc 2 stroke. Always wanted a Suzuki RGV250...

    Amazing content once again! My factory rear sensors keep beeping and stay active for 1-2 minutes even after I switch to Drive and I move forward. Any easy solution to this?

    • @SailingSVPipedream
      @SailingSVPipedream  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks very much, I am wondering if there is a setting in the infotainment for configuring the run on time? I would go look in mine, but with shocks out, I would get a skyhook fault code!
      Mine stays on for a few seconds only. Fronts stay on longer, but not much.
