Michael Jordan vs Glenn Robinson / Ray Allen - 44 points, puts on a show (Jan 2, 1998)

  • The first game in the New Year between Milwaukee (14-15) and Chicago (20-10) was one of those "fun games" with lots of crowd-pleasing moments.
Michael Jordan and Glenn "Big Dawg" Robinson were on fire for the whole game, both scored 44 points apiece (Jordan 15-22, Robinson 18-30 from the field) and made a lot of great plays.
Jordan in particular was phenomenal. He brought his vintage game - fadeaways, alley-oops, reverse layups, coast-to-coast plays - you name it. He had the fans on their feet all game long with his spectacular play, only a month before his 35th birthday.
His teammates were also great, especially Longley and Rodman. Luc had almost a triple double (24 pts, 9 rbs, 8 ast) while Rodman stole the show in the last minutes. Not with his rebounding or defense, although he had 21 rebounds in this game. "The Menace" went crazy on 3-pointers.
"Taco-Dennis" hit a couple of threes, rolled the score up to 114-100 and in doing so gave the jubilant crowd a round of free tacos.

I agree. MJ's footwork was spot on with a mixture of creativity AND fundamentals.

The way MJ ran the floor was amazing. So fast and quick. He didn't need to do all the dribbles, turns etc...he just beat you with Iverson type quickness. For his size, that was amazing. It was like watching a sports car accelerate.

I saw Glenn's career from Purdue to the pros. And that's EXACTLY what he was: the Carmelo of his era.
The ONLY difference between the two is that Melo plays in an era, with rules that ALLOWS him to consistently put up the kinda' #s that he does.
Glenn played in a MUCH BETTER/TOUGHER defensive era.

Yeah but even dunking wise, MJ did a lot of different things from Dr. J. He may have taken the foul line dunk from him and the rock the cradle dunk but I've never seen Dr. J do MJ's leaner dunk, his air walk dunk, his kiss the rim dunk, his double clutch revers dunk or even a 360. MJ had his own style dunking wise as well.

Back then there was a lot of talent in the NBA and every other night was a showstopper of a game. It wasn't the current snoozefest of an NBA that is SO boring they need rigged gimmicks like a play-in tournament and stupid rule changes to try to make the game easier. The proof is in the pudding - just look how fun this Bulls Bucks game was VS. the modern lullibye NBA with its all-time low ratings.
