*Frollo is an attempted murderer and rapist who beats on Quasimodo for going outdoors!*
Quasimodo attacks Esmeralda with Frollo, and tries to drag her away.
*Esmeralda gives water to Quasimodo because she feels sorry for him!*
    Esmeralda confesses to killing Phoebus.
*Esmeralda claims she's innocent, and Phoebus isn't even dead!*
Phoebus tells Esmeralda he loves her, but is then stabbed by Frollo, leaving Esmeralda heartbroken and telling Frollo to kill her too.

A lot of those things also appear in the book, but the book has so much more room to explain the motivations of the characters. And in the book, we are meant to pity Quasimodo but that doesn't mean everything he does is good. He was abused and brainwashed his whole life in the book. No wonde he didn't turn out as the best person. Esmeralda did indeed feel pity for Quasimodo, but she still was afraid of him as well. Of course, she never fell in love with Quasi and she dies in the end, just like every other character except for Phoebus and Pierre. In the book, Esmeralda did confess to attacking Phoebus but only after being tortured. She said it so the torture would stop.

The two earlier songs are kinda good, but the third mone, which already is too bland and a copycat, outright contradicts the point of the story. The song is about how his infatuation has freed him, but in the original story, such "love" puts you in danger or makes you evil (funny that an adulterer did that point, but that's another case).

Aside from the ending and cutting out the reason why Esmeralda had confessed to killing Phoebus because she was tortured until she confessed, this was surprisingly accurate to the novel. Though I will say that this ending where Esmeralda fell in love with Quasimodo while not as good as the ending of the Disney version where the city accepted him and praised him as a hero, it was not as insulting as him either secretly being an angel, being handsome all along, or Esmeralda leaving him to rot forever in prison while she just walked away with Pierre. Also I can assure you that this opening song is never going to topple The Bells of Notre Dame as the best opening song for this story.

Really, even Quasimodo's likability could have been salvaged if he had questioned Frollo or expressed unwillingness or reluctance to capture Esmerelda, if not outright trying to stand up to Frollo, and have Arch Judge-Deacon Frollo hit him and/or threaten him. Then they would have established the abusive relationship between the two, and that Quasimodo at least has the potential to be a better person than his father.

@@andreamess5345 Right, the original character is, like you've said, basically a puppydog who will go along with anything as long as someone he loves tells him to do it., and he took psychotic glee in causing others harm, like smashing in a guard's face or pouring molten lead on the angry mob. There's a reason Quasimodo was considered part of the Universal Monsters for the longest time. To be honest, while this is going to sound like absolute sacrilege to Hugo purists, I prefer Disney's take on the character to the original novel - the original character just kinda feels like a cruel stereotype despite actually being the most heroic character in the book.

But then again in the novel they tortured her until she confessed to murdering Phoebus. Also Phoebus decided to not come forward and say that he was really alive until she was being led to her execution just because he is that much of a douche waffle and the court didn’t care anyways because they also believed her guilty of being a with.

It's just like the disney version, just with a greater level of book accuracy! All it's missing is character development/compelling characters, consistency, beautiful animation, gripping music, well-done voice acting, and well tuned atmosphere. On the bright side, though, they did get rid of those gargoyles... only to replace their role as comedic relief with Pierre. I'm suddenly missing the gargoyles more than I ever thought I would.

Except for Esmeralda surviving her mother not being there and Quasimodo not getting whipped this is one of if not the most accurate adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame a lot of the quotes are directly from the book including Esmeralda shouting murder when Pierre gets knocked down

    • @robertcorbell1006
      @robertcorbell1006 Před 6 lety +3

The 1982 live-action British version follows it almost similarly, but retaining everything from the book and following it pretty much to the letter for the most part with the main exception of the 1938 film ending where after being discovered and the gypsies come to the rescue as they battle the guard, Esmeralda escapes with Pierre (who she falls in love with in this as a shoehorned plot aside from the main one once rejected by Captain Phoebus) while Quasimodo creates a distraction and is chased to the rooftops before pulling Frollo (an archdeacon as in this and the novel) from the roof, then holding on to one of the gargoyles for a moment as he realizes he's screwed if he lets them save him, thus he lets go. They keep much of the dialogue, much of the themes, and is perhaps the one other accurate version besides this one. I personally consider it my go-to film adaptation due to the few changes not being all that bad and an homage to the few decent things from the classic black-and-white version that was almost in-name-only, i.e., the ending while having properly adjusted the love story (not compositing the two guys into an honorable swashbuckler and changing the genre as was the fault of the original while keeping the added romantic element that makes for good Hollywood). You should Google it.

That does ring a bell but i'm not too familiar with the structure of Orthodox Christianity to be honest. Tsar seems more familiar a russian title and was sort of a link back to Phelous's " Tsar of reviews" joke, but I think you may be right about the Patriarch being the most senior religious figure in Russia.

I like to think Frollo fell in love with Pierre, not Esmeralda, after seeing him balance a cat on a chair on his nose

The Hunchback of Notre Dame Hall of Fame
Disney: Best Hunchback film (it's my favorite Disney movie, so of course it's the best)
The Secret of the Hunchback: Ripped off many elements from the Disney version (ex. singing gargoyles and Frollo singing in front of a fireplace)
    Golden Films: Most ridiculous story-wise
Goodtimes: Most accurate to the original novel...surprisingly
    Dingo: Visually the worst...just...ew

When the intro kicked in I got a massive wave of nostalgia as I remembered watching this...then terror when I remembered what it was actually like.
I was going to pull a "TO BE FAIR" on myself and say that they managed to get the most from the book into this version but then it cancels itself out by having that stupid ending. I get people wishing that had happened in the Disney version, because Quasimodo was actually sweet and had chemistry with Esmerelda, but in this? I was hoping they'd pull a "Secret of the Hunchback" ending and have him fly into the sun, never to return.

So now that we have seen all these versions of Hunchback, are we finally in agreement that Disney did Hunchback BETTER?

"His heart was as thick as the sky"? So... his heart was so thin, anything could pass through it like it didn't exist?
If anything, I do like the art in the film... not the animation, but the art doesn't look too (remembers Pierre's escaping eye)... it was okay. Very okay art.

Eh, the backgrounds aren't too terrible. Kinda bland an' empty, seems like. More or less meant the characters, but eh. It's a Good Times flick, so I'm prolly giving them too much credit regardless. I mean, it's sure as Hell no Disney picture!
      Better than Dingo, though.

I've started reading the actual novel recently, and, after reading some of it, the Goodtimes version actually seems to be the most accurate adaption. Granted, it's still full of shit like the others, but this one seems to have the most similar plot points and characters. Take that as you will.

5:22 Are we just going to ignore the blatant up-skirt shot? I know Disney had their Esmeralda a bit overly sexualized but at least they didn't take it to that level, instead they hid subliminal messages in Frollo's fireplace like NORMAL perverted animators XD

  • @animasonanamericanmangaka2115

I like the art style of this movie... it has a kind of "cheap old anime" aesthetic. Kinda like... Sailor Moon '92 but with less effort? It looks kinda like they made a flip book animation out of a Manga
