Vegetable garden and starting a cut flower garden

- A blissful long bank holiday weekend spent in the vegetable garden with the sun shining and no where else to be! I make a start at weeding and planting out vegetables and Al begins works on the new raised vegetable area. I also begin my first cutflower bed looking at some of the flowers we are growing. Hope you can come and join us!

I always mulch using grass cuttings and am fortunate to have a neighbour who supplies me with all of hers. I never have any weeding to do during the summer, and moisture is kept in the soil. I can't imagine not using this in my garden. Many thanks for sharing 😊

I'd plant the squashes in the corners of the raised beds, so they move onto the gravel and can get sun and warmth from the gravel and also don't take up so much room.
Nasturtiums do this naturally too and look great.

Great idea and would save in space. I had to get them in the ground as they were outgrowing their pots and the new raised borders aren’t ready yet but I could move some into it when they are ready.

Hello from Georgia, USA zone 8. I use grass clippings (untreated) in my in ground vegetable garden (350 sq feet or so) and it works really well to suppress weeds and retain moisture in the soil. My husband cuts the grass weekly, so there are no seeds from the grass in the clippings. I also hand weed the lawn so very few if any weed seeds are present. The weeds that do come up are usually seeds that were in the garden soil (our native soil) or were tiny weed seedlings that I didn't pull prior to spreading the clippings. I spread the clippings the same day he cuts while they are still green. The layer should be around 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch at a time. Any thicker, and the grass will smell. The grass needs time to dry and become a tan color before applying another layer. I continue to apply the clippings during the growing season until I have about an inch or so on the entire garden. Weeds that do make it through the mulch layer are usually easy to pull out since the soil underneath is moist. Eventually, the clippings get tilled back in to the soil for the following years garden. Try fast composting method, grass cuttings, leaves, water and a black plastic sack. Mix and put water in, much more than you believe, close the bag and put it in a sunny spot and leave it for 14days. Open and water the mix and just get some oxygen in the mix, close again and leave it for 2-3 weeks more. Hot composted grass cuttings and weeds haven’t got seeds and is beautiful black as mulch. 😊

My favorite amaranthus is ‘hot biscuits’ and it goes surprisingly well with a lot of flower arrangement color schemes. I’m the same as you though, a lot of the varieties I’ve been skeptical of and found they’ve not been my favorite.

I can already picture your cutting garden. It will be so colourful! We have just finished our season here in New Zealand.. - 5 last week but the strawflowers and statice flowers still survived! You'll be fine with the distance between strawflower plants. I plant mine that close or even closer.. They held each other up and put on a great display. Enjoy ❤

Thank you, don’t really know how best to do it, if I’ve planted too close I won’t be able to get at anything to harvest it but space is at a premium, we will see! The nigella may end up taking over the whole veg patch, who knows, it could all go horribly wrong! 🤣

Love watching you and look forward to seeing how the flowers grow. With the direct sowing of the seed, did you water them after seeding or do you wait until shoots pop up?
I wet the soil and then set seeds on the damp soil and press down lightly to get good contact. I may water but we’ve had some lovely light rain so hopefully they will appear soon
