City of God was nominated for best director, screenplay, editing, cinematography with these nominations you would get best picture nominations but one of the best movies of the century was denied a nomimation even for best foreign film.

Unfortunately City of God was submitted by Brazil for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002 but unfortunately didn’t get nominated so it wasn’t eligible to be submitted again for 2003, but I think they recently changed the rules recently since Yak in the Classroom actually was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film back in 2020 but was disqualified, but Bhutan resubmitted the film again in 2021 and got nominated again!

I think the voting branch for Best Foreign Language Film did not like the film at all and they’re the only ones that can vote in that category. But the branches of the academy really liked the film and that’s probably the reason why City of God got 4 Oscar nominations while also getting snubbed for Best Foreign Language Film.

    • @scottof83

It's complicated. It would have been nominated the previous year, but Brazil did not submit the film back in 2002, so it was ineligible, but since it was released in the states the next year, it was considered eligible in all the other categories, therefore it got nominated for major awards, but was not eligible for Foreign Film since was released two years earlier in it's home country.

City of God wasn’t eligible in 2003 because it was submitted in 2002 but didn’t get nominated. But it did qualify for other categories when it was had a theatrical in the United States back in 2003. I guess there are different rules when it comes to Best Foreign Language Film voting branch.

I heard that academy members from the Foreign Language branch didn’t like City of God at all, but the other branches of the academy really liked the film, which explains the films 4 Oscar nominations. And it also helps that it was distributed by Miramax with Harvey Weinstein being involved in its promotion and awards campaign.

You bring up a good point, why is it that a foreign language film produced in a majority English speaking country be eligible for Best Foreign Language Film but a foreign language film produced in the United States isn’t eligible? That’s probably the reason why Letters From Iwo Jima and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly wasn’t nominated for Best Foreign Language Film despite it being critically acclaimed and nominated in other categories, but I don’t understand their reasons on why is it that way…
