    Single time swing.
Single time swing is a very fast rhythm for swing. It's when the music is so fast that you can't triple step and you can't do the double time, so all you're going to do is take a slow step. A slow step is one step for two beats of music, so you're going to go one, two, then to the other side, three, four. If you were going to go ahead and take your rock stop your rock step would be five, six. Five, six. So you're going to go one, two, three, four, five, six. You could also count that slow, slow, quick, quick. If I did it with my right foot I would go slow, slow, quick quick, slow, slow, quick quick.
For a lot of you, you might relate to this as being kind of like jitterbug, right? So we're going to go slow, slow, quick quick, slow, slow, quick quick. Starting with your left, slow, slow, quick quick, slow, slow, quick quick. And remember, a slow step is one step for two beats of music. A quick step is one step for one beat of music. So as I face you one more time, let's start left. We go slow, slow, quick quick, slow, slow, quick quick. As I start right, slow, slow, quick quick, slow, slow, quick quick. So let's go ahead and try single time swing to music. A-five, six, seven, eight. Slow, slow, quick quick. Right foot. So when you're dancing to fast swing music, single time is the way to go.

Does this only work in 6/8 time? I'm trying to imagine how a 6 count would play out in 4/4.

+Tennyson Val I am studying dance and I am a musician. I'm suffering because swing music is in 4/4 or 2/4 and the basic steps patterns of the dance goes in 6/8 or 3/4. I am trying to stay with the beats of the music and forget abou the mesures. For me it's like fighting with the natural count of the mesures but if I want to learn to dance I'll have to accept that :)

The beats of music he is referring to in this video are indeed the quarter note beats of 4/4 time. So one time through the basic step does not line up with one measure of music. A basic step takes the space of a measure and a half. However, that is OK and in fact adds interest to the dance. Two times through the basic does line up with three measures of music, so in for example a 12-bar form, the beginning of the form would also be the beginning of a new basic step if you just did the basic step continuously.
