    Fun fact her sister ship RMS Olympic heard the distress call of both the HMHS (Her Majesty's Hospital Ship) Brittanic and the RMS Titanic. Another fact Brittanic's first name was the RMS Gigantic but was changed soon after the Titanic tragedy.It's believed by many that its bad luck to change the name of a ship, and that by changing her name to Brittanic it cursed the ship, forever sealing her fate to a life under the ocean.

    Britannic had a lot of bad luck. They hit the mine in the middle of a shift change of the firemen, so many watertight doors were open during the collision. The force of the explosion warped the hull and the doors couldn't close anymore...also, they didn't deploy all lifeboats since the ship didn't have that many people on board when it sank.

    _Britannic_ 101 (for dummies :P)
    HMHS _Britannic_ was the sister ship to the infamous RMS _Titanic_ , and the final ship built of the Olympic-class ocean liners. As the third and final ship of the trio, _Britannic_ was to be the ultimate ship of the class, the accumulation of everything learnt from her sisters. In much the same way that _Titanic_ 's design was changed after Thomas Andrews, the designer, sailed on _Olympic_ , many features of _Britannic_ were changed after _Titanic_ sank. Unfortunately, as Thomas Andrews was lost in the sinking, we'll never know his insights as to what should have been changed, but Harland and Wolff had a design for her much different than either of her sisters. These plans never came to be, however, due to the fact that, in 1914, the Royal Navy commandeered the still-incomplete _Britannic_ as a hospital vessel in exchange for paying for the ship's completion. White Star Line accepted, of course, the sinking of _Titanic_ hit them hard financially and the Navy's offer seemed to be their saviour. The ship was, of course, to be returned to her usual passenger service after the war. When launched (exactly as her sisters), _Britannic_ was the largest ship in the world. Also like her sisters, she didn't hold that title for long. Though _Britannic_ was designed as a transatlantic ocean liner, her first route would be in the far more temperate Aegean sea. Unfortunately, this meant that all those features which made for an immensely comfortable trip across the frigid Atlantic also made her extraordinarily hot and humid in the warmer Mediterranean climate. On 21 November, 1916, _Britannic_ met her demise. As she sailed along her standard route, she suddenly rocked violently. She'd hit a mine. The mine tore a hole in two of _Britannic's_ watertight compartments, and shook her so vehemently that several other doors were jammed. The ship sank in just 56 minutes, taking thirty people with her of the 1,136 aboard. Everyone had gotten off in a lifeboat. Unfortunately, though, a number of lifeboats were lowered before the order was given, and were splintered by the desperately spinning propellers as they rose out of the ocean. _Britannic's_ escort, HMS _Snowdrop_ , rescued the survivors soon after. To this day, _Britannic_ remains the largest passenger shipwreck in the world.

The third sister Olympic actually survived to be scrapped. The most interesting story of all three was the woman that was on all the of the sisters. She was a baby on Titanic, a nurse on Britanic, and she was some sort of employee on Olympic. I forgot her name, but I still think she was completely out of her mind.

      @@dcsa4273 well... I'm not sure if that's the exact phrasing I would have used.. There's never anything "nice" about death in this situation. People still lost lives. But it's fortunate that it wasn't worse, which it could easily have been.
      In fact, if not for those boats that did get destroyed in the propellers, there's every chance the captain wouldn't have stopped the ship and ordered any boats ready to be lowered.. He was determined to try and beach the ship on the Island of Kea. After a few minutes of lowering boats, the captain decided to halt evacuations to resume toward the island. However, the island was too far away, and off to the starboard side. For reasons unknown, the steering gear had jammed in the explosion, and so they were running on the port-side propeller only to try and turn the ship. It wasn't until the Britannic's forecastle was submerged that the captain ordered the engines stopped, and gave the abandon ship order. It was only then that the engineers and stokers in non-flooded compartments were allowed to leave their posts and make their way topside. Honestly, it was a miracle that nobody got trapped. Within the ship, given that the abandon ship order was given less than 3 minutes before the Britannic had completely sunk.

      @@dcsa4273 I'm not denying that it was indeed fortunate that there were so few fatalities... But what I'm saying is that death in any circumstance is still something to be mourned and respected. What would have been nice is if those people hadn't died at all. However, as it stands, they still died. And it's still a loss of life.
      To put it another way, if 30 people were killed when Sully landed on the Hudson River, would it still have been "Nice" that only 30 people were killed, out of the 155 on board? Or, what if a highway pileup resulted in 30 deaths. That would be considered a tragedy.
      All I'm saying, is be mindful of your words. You can express your relief that it wasn't worse, by saying, as I have, that it was fortunate that more weren't killed, but 30 people is 30 people. People who had lives, families, hopes and dreams. There's nothing nice about 30 people dying.

    • @DownundaThunda
      @DownundaThunda Před 4 lety +2

      Correct. The reason it never saw service as an Ocean Liner, is because prior to the construction of the Olympic Class ships (Olympic, Titanic and Britannic.) the White Star Line was undergoing financial hardship, and so asked the British government for a bail out so they could take the title of largest ships from the Cunard Line with Lusitania and Mauritania.
      The British government agreed on the proviso that the ships they funded could be requesitioned for military use in wartime, to which the WSL agreed.
      Both the Britannic and Olympic served in World War 1, but due to the fact that the Britannic was still under construction when war broke out, she was to have the partially completed luxurious interiors stripped out to convert her into a hospital ship. Meanwhile, the Olympic was requesitioned as a troop transport ship. Transporting US soldiers and munitions to the European front.

      @@puddycat2325 Being a troop transport ship, the Olympic would have needed minimal modifications. As for how cabins were handed out, I honestly don't know. Probably they just put people wherever they fit, as I'm fairly certain, the Olympic carried more soldiers than she ever could regular passengers in civilian service.
      However, I would assume that higher ranking officers would have been assigned the better cabins.

    • @AlexandruCarjan
      @AlexandruCarjan Před 4 lety

      @@DownundaThunda That is completely wrong they didnt ask the British goverment for bail and that isnt the reason Britannic and Olympicgot requisitioned for war never saw service as an ocean liner. All Cunard ships also were converted to troop transports and hopsitals as well as well as other companies. She never got to be an ocean liner because Titanic's disaster made it so Britannic got a complete redesign that pushed her launch date further. She was going to be completed but WWI happened and Britannic was requisitioned as a hospital ship along side many other ships. She was then given back to WS line and she was almost being finished again for passenger transportation but then she got called back into service.

      Now, while it was a dummy funnel, and originally had no use, they did utilise it for ventilation to the Engine Room, and in an emergency, it could be used as an evacuation route from the engine room, as it was while the Britannic sank. Britannic only too 55 minutes, Titanic took 2 hours and 40 minutes. Only 30 people died on Britannic. 1,496 people died on Titanic. The portholes of Britannic were also open for ventilation when she hit the mine. And Titanic survivors Violet Jessop was on Britannic. She sailed on all three ships. The open portholes allowed for quicker flooding. If they were shut Britannic may have been able to be beached. Rescue arrived in less than two hours. It took four hours for rescue to arrive to the site where Titanic sank.

    The Olympic and her 2 sisters all had 4 funnels... though the 4th one was purely decorative (hence the soot at the tops of the first 3). The "cranes" were automatic... ie. people didn't have to stay on the deck and die to launch the life boats.
    One lady experienced the worst incidents all 3 sisters experienced. Olympic hit (or was hit by) a Naval vessel. The other 2, their worst incidents were of course, was sinking.

    • @Zairn12345
      @Zairn12345 Před 4 lety

      The people who died were members of the “black gang” who were working the boilers below and overpowered the officers on deck to lower the boat prematurely. The captain didn’t give the order to deploy the boats yet and didn’t know people were in the water or he would have cut the port side propeller.
      He was trying to push the boat towards the island with the left prop as it sunk, but all he did was wind up pushing more water in the ship while it plowed water into its mine hole.
      There are records of eyewitnesses who saw people chopped up by the propeller; body parts, heads, blood, and brains in the water. It’s visceral. There’s a special from the bbc on CZcams which makes a good recounting of this with actors speaking the written accounts of survivors.

    On 21st November 1916, on 8:12 AM, The HMHS Britannic was struck by a mine and sank in the Aegean Sea. 30 people died, and 1,035 survived, making it, a total of 1,065 people on the HMHS Britannic, before it sunk. The HMHS Britannic only sunk in 55 minutes, and was the biggest ship to sink in WW1. It was only a hospital ship, and U-73 was responsible for planting that mine there. Had it know that the HMHS Britannic had weapons, No, at first when it planted the mine, but, Yes, when a crew member on the HMHS Britannic, used a gun to shoot at the torpedo, and it worked. Lifeboats were deployed, and was the only ship in WW1, to have lost less than 100 people. Unbelievable!

      To be fair, the people in those boats launched without authorisation, and the Captain didn't know they were there. However, after the boat got smashed, the Captain ordered the engine stopped, and for any ready boats to be launched. This, however was not an abandon ship order. It was mearly a way of reducing risk, as after a while, the Captain resumed his attempt to beach the shop on the island of Kea.
