This song is about indigenous rights in Australia - Midnight Oil have always been a champion of our first peoples - and a kickass band!
I was holidaying in the Northern Territory many years ago, when a few of us saw a band filming in the distance. Had no idea who it was, until the frontman started dancing….dead giveaway….it was Peter Garrett and Midnight Oil and they were filming Beds are Burning.

Peter Garrett was 1.93m, or just a shade under 6’4”. After the success of the band he became the Minister for the Environment and Water.

I can tell you when you meet him he seems even taller. Ran into him coming out of an elevator in Sydney back in the day. I am 5' 6" And felt like I only reached his belly button lol

I saw Midnight Oil this year, 2022, and Peter Garrett still had that energy! It was a fantastic concert, along with the amazing Hoodoo Gurus and all our ex's live in Texas as well!!! Rob Hirst, the drummer is one of the best drummers on this planet too!!!
I was in South Africa on holiday in 1994. I was on a tour with some other Australians and a few Americans. It turned out Midnight Oil were staying at the same game lodge we were at (Phinda) and came over to introduce themselves to the other Australians. We had shaken hands and were having a nice chat when one of the Americans came rushing over and said "Oh we heard there were some famous people here!". (they had no idea who Midnight Oil were) Peter Garrett immediately took off. I don't blame him!
The first time I saw Midnight Oil I was 16 yo in 1979 at a place called the Crystal Ballroom in St Kilda, Melbourne, AUS and Peter Garrett came out on stage in a straight jacket and a beanie cap. He started thrashing about on stage and looked like he was having a fit but it was just the way he dances. One of the most memorable gigs I have ever seen. Absolutely love an earlier song called “no times for games”.
I remember when this came out, I was around 7-8 years old waiting for them the pop up on MTV so I could watch them again ❤ now here I am retired after 21 years as a combat medic and I can just CZcams them any time ❤

Midnight Oil are currently playing their last 4 concerts of their final tour before retiring from touring. They are as great now live as they have ever been

Just saw them on their final tour about 3 weeks ago and Peter still is a machine on stage, they still sound as perfect as they always have and LIVE they put 110% into every show. We will miss our Oils but we will always remember them as one of our finest ever. Ty for enjoying this performance.

First saw them in 1984 at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney when I was 14. I had to wag the next day of school claiming a mystery 24 hour virus but was busted 2 weeks later when I was seen with my co ecused best mate on tv jumping out of the line up Infront of the tv camera and being an idiot wanting to be on tv. Yep, got on tv, but it was the ABC, back then Wollongong only had ABC and WIN TV. Quite a few teachers and kids from class let us know the next day how famous we were and rewarded us with 4 Thursday afternoon detentions after school. I still run now when I see a camera in close proximity.
They were backed by Machinations and Coloured Stones, an all Aboriginal band. My main memory isn't of the Oils, but Coloured Stones original version of 'Black fella. White Fella'. Doesn't matter what your colour, as long as you are true fella. Those words have never left my thoughts.
Blue Sky Mine, My Country and Truganini are some other great Midnight Oil songs (all of which I think they played at that concert iirc) I'd love to see you guys react to more of their stuff sometime. Great video!
Like very few performers Peter Garrett gets so into his music he becomes the music. Like Joe Cocker he almost gets possessed by the music. It simply pours out of him. The Australian Aboriginal community loves him as he has always promoted giving back the land that was taken from them. Their sacred sites. This is good stuff

I saw them in Zurich. Great concert some 30 years ago. It will never be forgotten.
Seen them live quite a lot early on. First time 1980 I think a surf club on the northern beaches of Sydney tripping off my nut and I can still see the screws slowly falling out and the sign that said maximum capacity 250 as 1000 plus of us shook the crap out of that building. Good times
this song became a world wide consciousness anthem for indigenous peoples dispossessed of their land and treated poorly by govts

At high school on the Gold coast Australia,we had to right to choose roller skating as our sports class. Wednesday afternoon were spent at the roller skating rink speed skating to this song. Fond memories of the 80$ .
Seen them 3 times. Just finished their farewell tour. Heard they spent nearly four hours on stage in Sydney!!!
For the people pulled on stage it would have been an amazing experience.

The Oils concerts always rock hard and were so much fun!
I don't know of any other band than Midnight Oil to have been so successful with songs covering a range of social and political issues (the only other artist that comes to mind is the great Johnny Clegg with Juluka, Savuka and his solo work). The amazing Peter Garrett, musician, lawyer, political activist, politician (government minister), then back to being a musician. Just like Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil have no pretensions, they have always been a band for "ordinary" people. They passionately meant every word that they wrote and sang, walking the walk to back that up.

I arrived in Melbourne in 1995 from Ireland and was very impressed with the live music scene and especially the pub music scene. Back in Ireland now but miss the craic in Melbourne,
Peter Garrett was a member of the Australian federal parliament a few years back and was actually the minister for environment.
Peter Garrett had a shit time as a politician because he was an activist an got hung out to dry by the Murdoch press for trying to do something....insulation in roofs with an unscrupulous private sector jumping on his scheme and sending unskilled migrants into roof spaces with nailguns and some of them got electrocuted. None of it his fault, but Andrew Murdoch said it was and a lot of people believed him.
Peter Garrett is a true believer and I doubt has EVER given a less than 100% performance (including his time as a cabinet minister).
My brother in law once (1980's) littered in a street here in Melbourne...dropped a Souvlaki wrapper in Carlton. He heard a voice shouting "Hey! Hey, mate! Don't rubbish Australia! Australia's a beautiful country. Put that in a bin! If ya' can't find a bin, give it to me and I'LL find a bin!" Bro in law is even taller than Garrett, but by this stage Garrett had been recognised by passers by, and with a growing crowd, Bro in law was shrinking inches by the second. He said to me "I saw that damned bald head and picked it up and walked away." He knew that the cheers of the crowd were for Garrett, and not for him.....they were booing him.......Bro in law is an Oils fan.
I saw them at a festival in my middle sized german town in 1994, loved them before and even more after. This song was so progressive back when it came out and sadly still is

I've seen them twice in Australia on their Resist Tour. Greatest Aussie band of all time for mine and still belting out the classics like it was the 80s.
If you want to see them in their prime look up Jimmy Sharman's Boxers from the Oils on Water concert. It doesn't get much better.
I saw Oils play live nearby to where I live in Sydney about 8 years ago............Garrett was on fire live, when you are 6 feet 4 inches and move like that on stage it's electric.

I was at that concert which was put on by 5fm featuring a few bands. Went there to watch Sting and left a Midnight Oil fan🤟

Oils, Chisel, Angel's. That's some great live music. Hunter's and Collectors are great live, huge sound.
This is a very political song, Australia basically stole native lands , while I am not privy to particulars, this was athem to make this injustice right.

You have discovered what Australian pub rock is really like , the bands all more or less start in pubs ,mostly small venues and therefore necessary to be self sufficient with the backup singers being part of the group .Peter Garrett the lead singer is an environmentalist who put his energy where his mouth is and ran for parliament , winning and becoming the minister for the environment . Afterthe politics he went back to performing .I love his dancing which has been likened to a cross between a surf stomp and an aboriginal Corroboree (traditional dance), whatever it is , when a whole pub full of people start doing it, it really is something to see. Most of their songs have a message. Of course we Aussies can 'keep it up'. You have barely touched the large and diverse talent of Australian music. More, please.

I’ve loved this song since it was first released (Yes, I’m that old!), it has a really cool groove and the lyrics obviously have significant meaning. My band has done this song for a couple years and their lead singer has way more stage presence and crowd interaction than me, but I don’t hear any of the cool original horn part or ethereal keyboard sound on this live version, which I have to say are both very prominent on our version since I’m the keyboardist (and vocalist). 😆
One other thing…I was confused about your reference to his accent and where the band is from. I thought you were inferring that they were from South Africa, but they’re from Australia (maybe that’s what you meant and I’m just an idiot!). The lead singer was also an attorney who helped to advocate for indigenous Aboriginal rights (which is also what the lyrics are about).

@@scrotrot1595 It's a great performance, but as a keyboardist, the lack of the original keyboard and horn (also probably keyboards) parts was immediately obvious to me. I also have to watch the video again because I don't remember if they even had a keyboardist on this gig. If they did, maybe his playing was buried in the mix (If so...damn sound engineer!)

Seeing them live is immense. Mogine and Rotsey on guitar, both very underrated, but world class, Hursty on drums is always high energy, Bones Hillman on bass - bless his resting soul. Garrett is one unique front man. Oils rock!!

Hi guys. Another AMAZING reaction video. The Oils are an icon. Not just amazing music, but they also have a powerful message. Don't know if this is in the comments from a long time ago (I've only recently started following you), but this song is about our history in Australia... and how, historically, white man has pretty much discounted the indigenous people of so many places they settled. The lyrics are beautiful "The time has come, to face the facts. It belongs to them. We're gonna give it back".
