I think Telugu cinema was commercialized in terms of hero in the 80's and 90's because the whole industry shifted from madras to Hyderabad where they had to build new studios which required a lot of capital which required producers to make commercial films rather than artistic I think thats what drove telugu cinema for 2 to 3 decades.

Even in 80s & 90s there are wonderful mix of arthouse, social drama & commercial flicks. Some of the films worked in other states, not as frequently though. Many films were remade in bollywood. But they were not pitched to neighbour states as much as tamil cinema did. Vishwanath garu, singeetam, jandhyala, bapu, dasari made some cult classic films. Phenomenon of rgv was felt across the country. Even women centric films were really well written. I think in the late 90s & 2000s there's a bit of downfall. But then again there were few filmmakers like Sekhar Kammula, chandu Yeleti, Krish, krishnavamshi in 2000s. It's just that filmmakers never thought of pitching their stories into another language/market. Now it's definitely on top of the game.

@@bobmarty3217 actually what he said is true. There were lot of external factors that really affected producers from taking up good off beat scripts. 80s was still good because that was the time when k vishwanath and also some prominent comic and screen writters flourished. Their style of addressing social issues with light heart comedy was later became a template. But with the beginning of 90s, things went more towards commercial rather than art. One such factor is theatre pricing where govt. was very strict with regulations which hampered profits and more number screens up untill state was divided in 2014.

Being huge Chiru fan, what to comment that telugu film Industry turned in to commercial film market only because of Chiranjeevi.Literally may looks like criticizing comment on him but in other sense let's see How he ruled the industry for three decades as single top most star.Along with money generation, Audience, directors , producer, technicians and whole film industry ran after him. It's a new kind of happy and exciting entertainment to people who are already fed-up with real life's sadness .That is impact he created on TFI. Also next generation stars followed his footsteps. Renaissance in TFI film industry happened from Shekar Kamula, now it's reached the peaks and the cycle goes on
