  • Hey everyone, thank you for watching this video. Please be kind and considerate, emetophobia is a REAL fear and it's absolutely debilitating, it's not stupid or made up, it can completely cripple the sufferer, so please try to have empathy and be understanding. Emetophobia is something that has hugely impacted me and controlled so much of my life, it's an absolutely terrifying and exhausting phobia to live with - and as I explained, it links into my anxiety and panic attacks, therefore it's always a vicious circle. I know that so many people struggle with emetophobia, and that's why I wanted to make this video all about my experience with it as my first instalment of Mental Health Monday, because I want to help you to feel like you're not alone and that I seriously understand what you're going through. And I hope that my advice / summary at the end helped you also, I know that it's not going to pay off overnight but if you keep reminding yourself of all the little positive affirmations I threw in there, over time it might start to help you because I know it did for me. At least I hope it does for you too. I am so glad and so happy that I've overcome a lot of my emetophobia - or at least the anxiety that was fuelling it has gone. It makes life so much easier and I felt like I was in a good place mentally to finally film this video.
Feel free to leave a comment down below with requests for my mental health series and things you would like me to talk about next - I'm totally open and happy to talk about anything, because mental illness and self-confidence and everything like that is something I'm so passionate about and I give my whole heart to it.
If you don't have emetophobia, I'm sorry that this video is irrelevant to you - hopefully one of my upcoming videos for this series with resonate more with you and will be able to help you (hopefully).
I love you all so much and please know that it does get better.
    Mwah

I have emetophobia. I've had it since I was 4-5, It all started because I was having a sleepover with my best friend at the time. She had been eating snacks all day and wasn't feeling very well, well in the middle of the night she woke me up with four words: " I just threw up" I had to get her parents while she was over the toilet and they just told her to sleep in her sisters bed. I was afraid that it would happen again so I slept on the floor. Every time she coughed during the night I jerked awake, scared, cold and shaking, hoping she wouldn't throw up again. Ever since then, when someone else gets sick or says " I feel sick" I will start sweating, feel sick, and I will close my eyes and plug my ears so I don't hear or see anything..and worry so much that I'll almost cry. When I feel sick, I have a mini panic attack. I shake, I can't sleep, and I'm constantly checking my temperature to see if I have a fever. It's horrible 😣

      @jessica23claire Před 7 lety +14

I have emetiphobia. I have the fear of:
    -Vomiting
    -Seeing vomit
    -Hearing/saying the words
-Someone saying they don't feel well
I do the association thing too. One day Instead of sitting on the couch I sat on the floor in front of the couch, and I got sick that day. Every time I sit like like it scares me. I was in a protest that day too, and I am scared of that sign, I even didn't use one of my blankets that touched the sign. The phobia even prevents me from eating on days I don't feel good. Even writing don't feel good in this comment gave me anxiety. I literally didn't eat meat for a year because I was scared of salmonella. When I don't feel good, I feel so scared I don't tell anyone, I just sit, for hours on end, just sitting, not eating. The year I had the flu I was so scared. One time, it was so extreme, that my aunt was sick, I wouldn't even walk on the path she took. If she walked past the oven and to the garage door to the car, I go around the house and through the front door. I even held my breath near sick people. This is the most relatable video ever. I feel your pain.

This is actually very accurate! When I was 14, I hadn't thrown up in about 4 years and it made my fear of sick, a huge anxiety. It got worse over the next few years to the point of losing many many nights of sleep. I am now nearly 20 and have been ill 3 times since (2 self indulged). Right now I am in the best place I have ever been. Trust me, you just think 'oh my god that was nothing! why was i worrying' and it makes the next time easier and the next time even easier. Just yesterday, after having too much to drink I literally just woke up and tried to lay there and contain the nausea, the moment I realised it wasn't going to happen I made the decision to get up and get it over with. That is the biggest achievement for me because if you saw me those years before, I was a wreck even thinking of it. I'd rather have died. Exposure I believe is the way which nobody wants to hear- Trust me I know! Of course it is not pleasant but facing it is the only time that you will literally think to yourself, what on earth was I so scared of. (I too was one of those people who wasn't triggered by words or videos / photos. Just the experiencing it)

Alex O this is very similar to me because I don't get overly anxious when I vomit, but I just can't handle it when other people vomit around me. For me, the trigger is everything involving vomit; the noise, the smell, the actual vomit, etc. Fortunately, my family doesn't vomit very often and when they do they usually keep it quiet from me because they know I'll have a panic attack and that I'll be traumatized.

This is the first video I've ever watched about Emetophobia and it's actually very comforting to know someone else feels the exact way I do. The reason I started searching for videos on this is because I had a panic attack last night due to my mouth watering which is what happens when I get sick. I didn't feel sick at all but small symptoms like that trigger full on anxiety and cause my body to shake. I've had emetophobia for as long as I remember, I used to wake up in the middle of the night crying as a kid when my stomach would so little as make a sound or bubble because I thought I was going to get sick. I have to leave the room when others get sick, I get anxious for months and months after I get sick and it's funny cause I don't get sick often at all. My advice for people that struggle with this is go through a checklist in your mind: I have been through this before. I have survived every single time. It's going to be okay.
Anyways, thank you so much for making this video it was very helpful.

I have emetophobia myself and for a few months now it has made my life quite difficult.
This may sound quite weird, but whenever I feel anxious (sometimes I feel sick for days) I think about people who had the stomach bug or who had to throw up, but they’re still alive and they didn’t die. I know I sound like a crazy person, but I do know that it‘s just in my head and if I might have a bug - so what, I can’t change it anyways.🤷🏼‍♀️
My aim in life is to overcome emetophobia and start enjoying life more, live more and worry less. To be sick isn’t something to worry about, because it will be over sooner than you think and in the end it’s just your body protecting you.
People say the first step into the right direction is to admit that your brain is playing games with you - and that’s exactly where we all have to start.
Our body just wants the best for us and those few minutes spent vomiting won’t kill us!
I hope this comment helped a little bit, let’s just all fight together and kick emetophobia in the a**💪🏼
Do you also have those moments of absolute strength and will to fight the phobia?😃🙈

I witnessed my bff vomit twice today in my house. I walked to her and saw she had thrown up on. The floor, I ran into the corner on my living room (not the same room she threw up in) and walked back in forth crying and shaking infront of my dad, mom and my bff, I couldn’t get the image out of my mind and kept have flash backs. She went home and I was scared to touch anything that she touched so my mom cleaned almost everything... she even asked me to come to the grocery with her just to get out for a while and forget it, but people with this terrible phobia understand that it isn’t so easy to just ‘forget’. She asked me in the car, “did you see anything?” And I nod and immediately started crying my eyes out. I still can’t get rid of this fear... any advice that helps? I feel like I’ve tried everything.

It's interesting what you said about emetephobia being one of the worst because it's out of your control. Mine definitely springs from hating being out of control of situations, and especially with my own body. I've had emetephobia since I was a child. At one point I thought I wouldn't be able to have children because of my fear of not coping. I do know have three children and have had my fair share of emetephobic experiences since. I really want to vlog about it one day but at the moment I find it hard to talk about.

    Warning! Might be triggering!
I know that I'm here really late but thank you for your video.
I'm 16 and I didn't know that something like that exists before watching this. When I was younger, like 7 years old I had really strong symptoms of that phobia. It all started when I was on vacation with my parents and cousin. We were sleeping in a tent and one night I got sick and in the middle of the night and had to run out of the tent barefoot and you know... It was absolutely terrifying. I cried while throwing up, begged it to stop and tried to keep it inside. It was so traumatic that I couldn't sleep for the next few months after we got back. I was panicking every night, refusing to go to bed without having this huge plastic bowl (?) near and I was constantly swallowing saliva to the point where my tongue was dry and hurt. It was a really hard time in my life and it continued for about a year. Fear stayed for much longer. I still remember what food caused this and I can recall all of the feelings. Little me promised herself not to throw up ever again.
The "funny" thing is that the night after I got sick my cousin did exactly the same except that he had thrown up all over our place and it was so scary that after that accident I couldn't bring myself to speak to him for a long time.
All of my elementary school I was absolutely terrified of bus rides. I was getting so stressed before our class was going somewhere that the only thing that I could think about before a trip was that one of the kids could get sick. I was afraid to sit next to others and when someone actually said that they were sick I would panic so hard and shake. I was trying not to show it tho. I always thought that my fears were irrational and didn't tell anyone about it. I thought I was weak and silly. I tried to overcome it so hard that with time, after all the years I get ahold of my fear. This video reminded me of the past and I think that this still exists somewhere, maybe not even that deep in me. I haven't thrown up after that accident and I just noticed that I'm still doing everything to avoid situations like that. I control what and how I'm eating really carefully and whenever I feel a bit sick I feel anxious. Mentioning throwing up is still a bit triggering for me and I don't know how I would react if someone near me would do it. I wasn't paying attention to this so it means that it doesn't control my life anymore. These are just old habits I guess.
    Anyone else has similar experience?

For me it is only when someone else throughs up which wasn't good because 3 people have been sick in front of me.
I absolutely HATE IT when someone says they fell sick I start to feel sick and scared and I close my eyes when I can see it coming.
Luckily one of my teachers understood but the one I have now thinks I'm silly and childish.

Oh my! It's amazing how I can relate to everything you're saying! This year my emetophobia has been really high because of 4-5 vomit experiences. It's been very traumatic! And I don't know why but normally I won't really care if someone vomits silently, but if you make noise ( which most people do) that's what starts me off. The noises have always been the most triggering thing for me, I guess it's because my mum can get easily sick and she is REALLY loud when she throws up. Plus, this year she's been ill quite a lot. I get trembly and I shake and cry, I have to block out the noise with headphones or something loud. It's annoying that most adults don't understand and think it's " silly" but I just can't help it. Thanks for everything! I asked my grandma and she said she may get me therapy for it! Thanks again! Stay strong! 💕

I'm exactly the same. Babies spitting up doesn't bother me, because they're not sick or anything it just happens sometimes. I can't stand hearing, seeing, or even thinking about myself getting sick. I get so anxious and I feel trapped when people say they feel nauseous or they're sick. I just run and plug my ears and try to breathe because my heart beats so fast :(

I so appreciate you posting your story about emetophobia. Strangely enough, I am 38 years old and I've only ever vomited 4 times in my entire life. I've researched the phobia and a lot of times it's people that don't vomit often that suffer from the phobia. Not always, but a lot. This phobia has caused me severe panic and anxiety attacks many times. Sometimes I don't allow myself to go to sleep because I'm afraid I'll wake up sick, even if I don't feel sick. Also, the anxiety can cause nausea, which makes the anxiety worse, which makes the nausea worse. Vicious cycle. Sometimes I have not allowed myself to eat if I feel nauseous because my mind thinks, "what doesn't go down can't come up". Sometimes I worry all the time about catching a stomach bug or food poisoning. I'm currently going through therapy to help me address the root issues of this. I don't want it to control my life!

I had Emetophobia at least 6-9 age. I was unsettled when someone says I'M GONNA PUKE!!!. But today I overcomed it. When my cousin vomited at me because we were on a VERY DIZZY ROLLER COASTER, I screamed so hard I ran away to my friend to the CR. When we started to sleep, I heard my cousin say "Ugh I feel sick" so I got up, motionless, just so scared. Then he ran away to the restroom and puked. We got back to sleep at 4 A.M. I searched for "Fear of Vomits" I came up with Emetophobia. When I hear my cousin coughing I'm going to get up motionless and be scared for 10 seconds. This day I'm still scared of Emetophobia. This is my story of Emetophobia.

I've had it for about 2 months, I found out I had it yesterday, it kept me home sick from school 4 times, and I know I've been feeling sick in class all day everyday from this and when ever I felt slightly sick, I'd go right to the teacher and ask to go to the bathroom. It's been affecting me at home too. It's been keeping me up till times like 4 in the morning, because whenever I was about to fall asleep, I'd feel sick, and run to the bathroom, I've been crying myself to sleep every night because it's been torturing me to the point where i never want to leave, and that I want to sleep forever. On the weekends I've been sleeping till times like 1 or 2 in the afternoon and I wake up starving, and eat, and then I still feel sick, because I had just eaten, I don't know how it really started, I was just in class and I said to myself, what would I do if I threw up right now, and I felt sick all of the sudden, and it affects me constantly. It's 24-7 that I feel the affects of Emetophobia, because there's no time that I can't not think about it, even at my house. It's everywhere, its following me around, making my daily life hard to get through, it feels like each day is 50 hours long. Emetophobia also affected me in the 4th grade, but I didn't know what it was, and my guidance counselor told me it was just nerves, but I now realize what it was. It's now causing me depression because of its affects to my life. And I know this was long, but it's 2:25 in the morning, I can't sleep, and I needed to vent about my life, and thank you to anyone who took the time to read all of this. Have a nice day. 😌😞

i didn't realize i had emetophobia until very recently, but it started when i was 7. now i realize how much of a problem it was, even then. i threw up on a thursday, and a few years later, also threw up on a thursday again. after that for about a year, i would be afraid of thursdays because i was so scared of throwing up and thought i would just because of the day. i also couldn't say vomit or throw up, i would have to say "get sick" because the words themselves bothered me. if i saw anone on tv throw up, i would feel nauseous for hours after, much less someone in person. both times after i got sick in elementary school, for the rest of the school year, i would either have visible panic attacks in class or go to the nurse every. single. day. this year, for months on end, i would just be sitting in class and have an overwhelming feeling that i was going to throw up with no nausea. this would happen multiple times an hour, every day, and i am just starting to get over this now. i am so happy that now i've found other people that share this so i can learn how to overcome this fear because it's something that can have such a huge impact on someone's life.

I cry every night every day at school, today I cried for an hour in the bathroom and the left school. I have major panic attacks everyday and it makes me feel worse. The way for my to calm down is to tell myself I can kill my self before I throw up. And some how that comforts me knowing I have an out and I don’t have to feel this way anymore or be afraid I get stomach ulcers from how much I worry I’m Just tired of it

I am part of that 2% of people with emetophobia since I'm a male. For me, my emetophobia is more focused on the thought of other people vomiting around me. When I get sick, I willingly lay down and stare at the roof for entire days to avoid throwing up, but I don't get that anxious about it if I do throw up (even though I can remember every single time I've thrown up ever since I was 6). However, when people around me say they don't feel well or when I see or smell someone vomiting, I get panic attacks. I guess my fear is more about getting thrown up on or smelling vomit since I don't get that anzious if I see someone vomit through a screen. Anyway, it's absolute TORTURE because I have to take a bus and there's a person that ALWAYS throws up... The space to walk between seats is not very big either... Also, I have never drunk alcohol or gone to a party with alcohol because I really don't want people to vomit around me.

Hey dude! After your program could you tell me some tips that helped you cure emetophobia because I can't seem to find anyone who will tell tips on how to cure it for free. This fear has taken fully over my life and I can't take it no longer

+dark gamer Sure thing! I'm only halfway through the book now though, it may take awhile to finish. But I will say, positive thinking definitely helps, more than you know! Remember, it's all temporary anyway - being ill, and your anxiety.

Thank you for your post. My daughter suffers from this and I learned so much from your video. Many family members (her grandparents and some friends) don't understand her but my wife and I just try to understand her and listen to her. As a parent we felt helpless. But to know there is a name for this mental phobia helps and to hear other people suffer from this terrible phobia helps us who don't have it.
Thank you Rhiannon and everyone posting you're stories in the comments.
I pray every one of you finds peace and mental control no matter what level in controlling your Emetophobia.

I just found this video and I‘m so glad that someone is talking about this openly. You’re so brave. I can literally relate to everything you said. Thank you so so much for filming this video! It really makes me feel less alone with this issue.

I know no one will read this but I feel less weight on my shoulders once I've written it so why don't I write it in a comment of such a lovely video.
So, I'm 11, going to be 12 soon and I've always been afraid of being "s" and when you said you didn't want to say the "v" and "S" word I started to cry because I have never said them for almost my entire life, then scare me that much. And funnily enough, as I'm writing this I'm in my room because today a kid at my school was "s" and "V" everywhere and it was on the floor in the hall outside the cafeteria where I could directly see it when eating. Then I came home and my parents told me to go to my room after they heard all about it so if I had caught the illness so close to X-Mas that It wouldn't totally ruin this year's Christmas like last year. I first got emetophobia last year, 4 or 3 days before X-Mas I was "S" and "V"...... 6 times. I was crying to my parents for help but they told me I just had to let it happen just like you said. I eventually got better on the 25th but on the 23rd I had gave it to my Dad and Sister so we got Christmas Eve on the 26th and Christmas on the 27th so I honestly hate December and Christmas now (sorry if that offends anyone, just my opinion) but yeah and TYSM I love you for opening up in this video and no ones gonna read this so.... yea.... but it would be nice if I like..... maybe got like a like on this comment other than myself XD well yeah. Bai U just earned urself a new sub btw! Keep growing!
