Joy in the Morning - Pt Ulhas Kashalkar Sings Alhaiya Bilawal

  • Pt Ulhas Kashalkar is a connoisseurs' delight. A thinker and a traditionalist, his gayaki reflects immaculate ragadari with his own stamp of creative individualism. Having trained under Pt Gajananabuva Joshi he is identified as a Gwalior vocalist but considers himself to be a student of all Gharanas.
"I have had a variety of influences on my music. Even my Gurus brought a multiplicity of influences with them. I like great music from all gharanas. As a listener, I am also a student. But,my preferences are with individual musicians rather than gharanas. As such, I would be hard put to say which gharana's style dominates my own singing. I don't consciously try singing in any particular style. I am more concerned that my music should be pleasing, and communicate the mood of the raga."

Absolutely delightful Alhaiya Bilawal ! Like a blast of fresh air. One cannot but wonder at Pt Kahsalkar's effortless gayaki that wanders along higher Saptak's. A total treat indeed ! Thanks a ton for uploading " havanurmic !"

He is among the handful of exponents of this form who can unquestionably be called great. Technique and artistry perfectly matched and a voice to match. Kashalkar on song is simply mesmerizing.

Rev Sir, as said, your rendition is universal, uncategorized, easily understandable Raag and Taal wise, even to an entry level person like me.

Its rightly said by him that he has imbibed good things from various Gharanas. This is exactly was the style and attitude of the Gayaki of Ustad Azmat Hussain Khan Dilrang, who belonged to Atrauli-Jaipur and strong ties of marriage with the Agra, Khurja and Delhi Gharanas. His Gayaki was a fusion of the best of the features of these legendary Gharanas. Besides many other vocalists influenced by his Gayaki I am sure that Pt. Kashalkar follows the Gayaki of Ustad Azmat Khansahab.
