20 years ago tonight, I was one of the snowflakes in the snow storm segment and a prairie girl in the American West segment. One of the top three best nights of my life. Not enough words to describe how amazing this entire ceremony was, and what a privilege and an honor it was to be have been chosen to be part of it.
Awesome!
I bet that when you saw this again, it gave you tears to your eyes from the nostalgia and happy memories you lived through from the opening ceremony and I bet it was so much fun dancing as a snowflake and a one of those happy-go-lucky Mormons that arrived to the beautiful land of Utah. My favorite segment, aside from the five nations of Utah and the Mormon Pioneers, was the tribute to Kristi Yamaguchi.
I had a friend from my time at Utah State who had grown up in Calgary. Her younger sister got to be one of the kids in the opening ceremonies of the Calgary Winter Olympics in 1988, and then her own daughter was one of the kids in the Salt Lake City opening ceremonies.
I remember watching this, and I was moved to tears by the ceremony. I said well, the Native Anericans have finally had their day before the whole entire world.
I remember the organizing of this event was going very poorly. It was then that Mitt Romney was given the job, turning the whole thing around. It was his decision to involve the Native Americans in the ceremony, and this was the result. It couldn't have been more perfect. I will never forget how blessed I was.
This gave me chills. The national anthem, the flag, the silence when it was carried in... incredible.
Never forget 9/11. May God have mercy on America once more.
It always gives me the goosebumps every time.
Could’ve heard a pin drop
About 6 months after 9/11. This was great for the US to come together.
We need to come together now. Its too much hate, killing, sickness and pain right now. Only God can save us.
and we here in Salt Lake City watched our town become an armed bastion.. the security was just nuts... an entire segment of the City Center was in a special Olympic Zone, and you had to get throughly checked out to go in, just ot do any business in the area.
@@lisawilliams9211 bless you lisa
These games provided hope, for a country that was in dire need of it.
@@lisawilliams9211 Absolutely. God alone can help us.
The version of the USA national anthem used here was so heartfelt in the beginning and so powerful at the end! I love it!
and it was fitting America was going through grief The Towers are gone, the Pentagon is destroyed, Flight 93 has gone down, and millions of lives were lost. Here the world shared our grief and helped boost our morale as we opened the games in Salt Lake.
I know... we were all startled by what happened on that fateful September day in New York and Washington D.C in 2001 no one will ever be left to face hard times alone neither during and after 9/11 or the present day where we’re in a long and arduous fight against a global pandemic

@@adorabasilwinterpock6035 Well, technically, the consequences of 9/11 caused the loss of almost millions of people, with the Iraq and Afghanistan invasion.
That roar from the American crowd for the entrance of my Australian Team was amazing!! Goes to show the deep love and unity between our two countries!
It should be noted that your country's former Prime Minister John Howard was in Washington DC the morning of the attack, and he not only invoked the ANZUS Treaty, but was the first world leader to lend a hand to the US.
Every time I travel abroad, it is the Aussies that I have the easiest time befriending no matter where I am in the world. It's like bumping into a relative and immediately feeling at home. Much love to Australia and its incredible people from an American.
The Indian Tribes Tribute is awesome. The magnificent and beautiful adornment doesn't make their plight easy to go away and it shouldn't. God Bless ALL of them and my hopes for a wonderful better future for us all.
It doesn't get any more respectful than that.
Doesn’t it get better than this?
I love all the Native Americans of this country known as USA 🇺🇸.
I always wanted to know which Indian tribe I am from but I have a dirty blonde curly hair.
But I love the way Indians are wise and brave.
My favorite Indian hero is Pocahontas because she was the one who befriended the explorer John Smith.

A moment with a flag and a national anthem is so touching. I was watching this on TV 18 years ago, I remember it like it was yesterday.
sad all those lives lost when the towers fell this flag was on the roof of Tower 1 and came down with it when it fell.
It was very sad when that happened.
It makes me sad for those who lost their loved ones when the World Trade Center was attacked and then came crashing down.
This was by far THE best openning ceremony I've ever seen. I enjoyed from beginning to end. The presenting of the 9-11 flag made me cry in 2002 when I first saw this and again now. Loved it!
Best opening ceremony ever? George Bush, a war criminal made an appearance.
@@JohnDoe-yi9rm lmao
Waited 19 years to see this without any commentary....
This is the most heartwarming opening Ceremony in my life, and it got me into the olympic spirit!
When I saw it the first time on CZcams from either the last months of last year or the first months of this year I fell in love with this video because I started to love Robbie Robertson’s songs so much that I only got one song of his from iTunes called “Making A Noise” but I added more songs of his on my wishlist. I have the dirty blonde curly hair but my mom’s mom had a back surgery and has an Indian blood in her which makes me wonder which Indian tribe I belong to.
its interesting how as time passes the ceremony usually gets more and more extravagant. yet nothing can replace the simplistic and joyful olympic walk where all the teams enter the stadiums in a procession. classic.
This opening ceremony won seven Emmy Awards
I never knew that
That's pretty amazing. I do have to say this is my favorite as far as music and if I'm not mistaken that last for a live music accompanied parade of nations.
I did not notice that.
I love this opening ceremony very much.
Which awards?
@@gabetalks9275 Emmys is an American Award show for the best in Television.
I was lucky enough to attend this. I’d forgotten how spectacular the program was, yet nothing impacted me more than the juxtaposition of sound and silence during the flag ceremony. Quiet enough to hear a pin drop in the stadium, but above, chopper blades whirling in the dark; offering a sad reminder our world had changed forever. Airspace security for this event was unprecedented.
We are very grateful to Olympic Channel making our quarentine happier with amazing ceremonies
And even if the quarentine is lifted, we will still be very grateful to the Olympic Channel to keep up uploading videos of the past opening and closing cermonies ever recorded on TV for the Olympic games!

I appreciate them too
I'm not american, but when they carried in the flag that flew on the world trade center was such a painfully beautiful moment wow
I thought I'd be fine watching the Ground Zero flag being brought into the stadium, but as soon as it came on-camera, my breath caught in my throat and tears began to well up in my eyes. I suppose those feelings from having lived through it (even though I was a teenager in California) will never truly go away. I can't imagine how it must be for those who lived in New York City and those who lost loved ones - my heart goes out to them still.
princesskyrie I was the exact same way when the flag was brought in.
I lost one of my cousins in the south tower collapse, he was FDNY. His father died in 2016 from 9/11 cancer after spending weeks digging at Ground Zero and another cousin, brother and son to the above mentioned died this past march from 9/11 cancer.
This is self torture for me.
On September 11th of this year it will be the 20th anniversary of the time it happened around that time.
It's been 20 years now and I still remember those wonderful times. As if it were yesterday, it's a pity you can't turn back time. It was one of the best Olympic Games.
It's interesting to see the difference in the performances of the U.S. anthem pre and post-9/11. It was a unique position where the U.S. played host to a Summer and Winter Olympic Games, separated by six years and that something between drastically changed the scope of the event. Looking back on the Atlanta 1996 opening ceremony, it was the complete opposite of the word "restraint". There were red, white and blue banners, fireworks cracking between verses and the Blue Angels flying overhead. Extravagant, but most definitely the America we all know and love.
The World Trade Centre attacks effectively levelled the context of American pride for a while after. The event showed that even the lofty heights of the United States could be made vulnerable, and the nation was in dire need of healing. The presence of the flag flown at Ground Zero gave some real gravitas and context for what happened in just the months prior. The entrance of the flag to complete silence and the fact it was carried in by athletes and not military members sold the impact it had on American society. The ripped, but still whole condition of the Ground Zero flag also represented the state of America around this time too; a nation grieving and in distress, but still united and unwilling to allow victory to those who seek out deliberate harm to others and the destruction of peace for their own agenda.
Otherwise, the two ceremonies had the same variant of the anthem and the hand-over-heart salutes. So, the basic structure of the anthem was still solid. Looking back, It's pretty fascinating to see how just six years of context can change how the two ceremonies started.
I was a teen in 1996, and had just turned 20 when the 2002 Olympics aired, so I definitely remember the 'change in times'. I actually became aware of terrorist groups in 1995, and for one brief horrifying second thought, "If they hate us so much, why haven't they tried attacking here?" I was still shocked like all of America, but I did think about that one thought. For me the 2002 Olympic Opening Ceremony was all about hope and showing the World, "We're still here." I miss the feelings of unity that existed back then almost 20 years ago.
I was in that stadium and it was truly magical. The Olympics and its tradition is something the world needs now. These games I can say without a doubt changed my life!
Well I wasn’t born and raised at Utah USA. I was born and raised here in Texas USA.
I always love the Dixie Chicks because the song I love the most is Wide Open Spaces but a year ago I started to fall in love of the song called Ready To Run.

No doubt why its on the top in ranking for winter. This whole show proves that Salt Lake 2002 is the best winter olympic opening so far. The National Anthem, Tabernacle Choir and overall production are very spiritual and mesmerizing. Great job!
indeed and when you have Tab Choir here you can't go wrong they are the best group in America and the 400 strong voices are the spirit of Utah.

By far, the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics was the best Winter Olympics ever. The pageantry, choreography, and respect for ALL nations was shown. If Salt Lake City ever puts in a bid for the Olympics again, it would be the winner hands down.
as of now january 2021 they are thinking 2030 or 2034 i cant wait as a Utahn born and raised
@@Some0ne001 Since the US is hosting the 2028 Summer Olympics in LA, it would make 2034 very likely for a bid, as opposed to 2030. The IOC doesn't like countries hosting Olympics back-to-back.
@@grizzfan08 Unless no one bids and the IOC needs a cheap solution fast.
Salt Lake City is going to try and get the games again. The USOC has selected the city to bid for either the 2030 or 2034 bid.
The Salt Lake 2002's emblem consisted of a snowflake, which consisted of three separate sections. The yellow top section symbolizes the Olympic Flame, and represents the athletes' courage. The orange centre section symbolizes the ancient weaving styles of Utah's Native Americans, and represents the region's culture. The blue/purple bottom section symbolizes a snow-capped mountain, and represents the contrast of Utah's mountain and desert areas. The orange/yellow colours above the blue/purple bottom section also gave the appearance of a sun rising from behind a mountain. One of my favorite ceremonies... Salt Lake 2002 had been so much anticipated for me that year, but sadly in my country, they didn't broadcat the ceremony live and just aired some 30 minutes highlights. That was so frustrating for me!!!... Years later . Thanks CZcams, I could watch the full ceremony... And I still think that Salt Lake was for the Winter Games what Barcelona was for the Summer Games...
The closing ceremony also is one of my favorite closing ceremonies ever, for both summer and winter games (hope you to upload the closing ceremony, too)... In my country the closing ceremony was broadcasted live when it had already started... so, we missed the first 20 minutes or so... it was aired almost complete and live...
Nacholympic SLC is special as it’s the first time an Aussie win gold (thanks to all his rivals falling over) in short track
I live in Southern Utah next to Zion's national park when this all happened, when i was 10 years old we watched the Olympic torch go through Zions nation park i was next to one of the handoff areas and after the flame was passed on to the next runner the previous runner saw me who still had the torch and gave it to me to hold not sure why but i had a picture taken of me holding it and my parents tried to hold it too but the officials intervened and wouldn't let them touch it nobody but me. I had no idea how rare of an opportunity i just had that few people ever have on this earth, what a crazy thing to think about now that i am 29 almost 30.
You can hear a pin drop when the flag from the World Trade Center was being carried into the stadium.
I was there and it is my clearest memory from that night. I've been at stadiums when they call for a moment of silence and it's still nothing like what happened here. The crowd just naturally went silent as soon as it was announced, I was moved to silent tears but also brought back to that awful day (I was in DC on 9/11 and could see the the smoke and smell that awful smell from NJ when I was able to get home a few days later)

The other countries that had the most olympiads are the following:

-South Korea: 2 Olympiads (1 summer in 1988, 1 winter in 2018). South Korea will also host the 2024 Youth Olympic Winter Games.
-Russia: 2 Olympiads (1 summer in 1980, 1 winter in 2014)
-Australia: 2 Olympiads (2 summer in 1956,2000)
-China: 1 Olympiad (1 summer in 2008) and 1 Youth Olympic Game in 2014. If the 2022 Beijin Winter Games are organized, then China will have hosted 2 olympiads and 1 YOG.

This opening ceremony has it all. Solemnity, tradition, music, symbolism, brotherhood, artistic drama, patriotism, sports, culture, and fun. It was also stunning while being very simplistic. A really, really excellent job.
This brings back so many fond memories. I was living in Salt Lake and was present at Washingn Square when the IOC President opened the envelope to announce Salt Lake had won. We heard him say "Salt..." and that was it, all those emotions burst forth. I lived in SLC during the run to the Games and saw the 1996 Torch Relay come through including the overnight stop in Washington Square. I was honored to be a volunteer for Salt Lake (go Team 2002!), the first of three Olympics that I was a volunteer for. The 2002 Opening Ceremony had all everything you need for a great opener and it delivered. As a Native American, the section honoring Utah's Five Nations always brings tears. I will carry those positive vibes with me when it's my turn to pass on.
So nice to finally see the full version of the opening ceremonies!! I was at these games but was very disappointed in the US network's water downed and edited version of these ceremonies. I can finally relive the entire ceremonies as like when we were there!! thanks Olympic channel!

I feel the next ceremony might be a closing one
Impactful today just like 20 years ago. I was there with my Husband and parents. ❣️❣️❣️
I am in love of this opening ceremony because it’s like a movie to me.
I was born on 1994.
I love it so much.
I’m in Texas USA 🇺🇸
1994 is when Lillehammer hosted the Olympic Winter Game.
I always love this video so much.
I was born three days after the Lillehammer 1994 opening ceremony.

I think that was the first opening ceremony I actually watched on TV as a child.
Would love to see the olympics back in America. The Winter Olympics in Salt Lake was just a giant success.
The Olympics will be coming back to America at the 2028 Summer Olympic games in Los Angeles, California

What?!

problem with winter polemics in Utah is we don't get the snow like we used two, Also are population has increased a lot two so winter Olympics here is a real nn go
The salt lake winter games happened around my time on that exact year.
I live in Utah and remember this this was incredible
I live in Texas but I love the other states of the USA 🇺🇸.
Especially Utah.
I didn't live in Utah when this took place but I live a couple blocks from the stadium now!
I was 3 so i might have watched but not remember it too much
This is lovely thank you very much 💓
The flag and the eagle flying over a symbol of hope 🤝
This is my favorite Winter Olympics
I hope Salt lake City hosts the 2030 winter Olympics. Make it spectacular just like the one in 2002.
Me 2 ❤
I was 4 (turning 5 on June) when I watched the opening ceremony.
What an epic production!
6:20 20 years, never forget 😢
Absolutely amazing. Waiting for Seoul '88 and Lillehammer '94 Opening Cerimonies.
Me 2
Wowww... AT least!!!! Please, then the closing ceremony too!!!
One of the more emotional opening ceremonies ever. I remember the torch relay passing through my neighborhood in L.A. and I remember how many people had tears on their faces. Salt Lake City DELIVERED. Now, almost 30 years later, Los Angeles is once again Olympic host city for the 2028 Summer Games and I for one CANNOT WAIT!!!
I'm enjoying this nonstop and it still less than 2 hrs in.
2:35:52 This music is called: the Firebird Suite by Igor Stravinsky.
In 2028, after over 25 years, the Olympics will return to the United States
And Biden will open
@@MaxiRu23 i think by 2028 well have bigger issues to deal with
@@CatsRock11000 the ongoing climate crisis will be the most pressing tbh.
@@kitsunefire92 I don't care what the issue is. I will watch it. The same in Summer Game in Paris.
BTW: There's a rumor that SLC will host the Winter Olympics Game in 2030 or 2034.
2:37:50 and now ladies and gentlemen the piece of music you are hearing is Ode To Joy written by Ludwig Van Beethoven on of my favourite pieces of classical music that Beethoven wrote
One of my favorite parts of this opening ceremony.
i legit almost cry while they sing the national anthem. So solemn and beautiful that I sing along.
I always love that part.
we will always remember what happened 22 years ago. it's important to never forget.
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ very powerful goosebumps.
I love the native Americans beautiful history
Hermosa ceremonia, cohesionada y con mucho sentido!
Lake Plácid 1932
Squaw Valley 1960
Lake Plácid 1980
Salt Lake City 2002
It's wonderful to see most nations getting a loud applause from the crowd as they walk in
Spending iso watching past Ceremonies makes us feel better
2:23:54 "Song of Praise, Ode to Zeus" from "Canto Olímpico" by Mikis Theodorakis.
I love that song so much.
This has inspired me to resume training starting tomorrow morning.. here's to 2026 and 2030!
Luck My friend🍀
I just dont think anyone will ever top that LeAnn Rimes brilliant performance and the Flaming Rings on the ice to end things
I love that part so much.
I’m so happy that I finally get to watch this for the first time! I was actually born the same day the opening ceremony was happening so not much for me to remember from back then ;))
37:50- Germany's placard bearer was the famous Air Force pilot, Gail Halvorsen who is nicknamed The Candy Bomber for delivering chocolates and other sweets to East German children behind the Iron Curtain during the Blockade after World War 2.
Very interesting to watch this it was definitely a different back in 2002~
Every Four Years the World has to remind us that we are from the same Human Race. We can come together and enjoy each other in the competition. It doesn't have to be any other way.
That’s True
As was the case with the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta 1996, this opening ceremony was also notable for its use of Bugler’s Dream as part of the official ceremony. Prior to these two Games, it had become an unofficial theme of the US television network airing the Games, summer or Winter going back to 1968.
50:15 🇲🇽 También Fue México A Salt Lake City 2002
Es Verdad lo recuerdo cómo si fuera ayer!!! Tenía 8 años cuando supe que eran realmente los juegos Olímpicos de Invierno
One of my adopted Uncle's was a volunteer for Salt Lake City 2002. He was a bus driver. He was responsible for getting the tenors from the Mormon Tabernacle choir to this very ceremony.
Short track speed skater Amy Peterson carrying the US flag. She became a coach later. Really a great person to be around. I used to speed skate long track.
EDIT: I didn't notice it before, but right at 1:10:09 is an older man walking toward the bottom left of the screen waving a U.S. flag. His name was Bill Cushman and was the manager of the 1980, 1984 and 2002 U.S. Olympic Speedskating teams. He coached me when I first joined The Midway Speedskating Club in 2002.
I love the Olympic games in summer and winter.
😁🤩💘🥰😍🕊
What happened with Seoul 88 OC? Today was going to be the broadcast... We are still waiting!!!
????
bro, that ode to joy is lit! 🔥 the live orchestra makes this olympics grand. hoping that the next olympics has this.
So quiet and sober when the flag of new York entered the stage, especially when 9/11 happened a few months prior. So somber...and while I love other country's anthems watching our anthem as that flag flew makes me proud to be an American
Same.
Same here.
I am truly mesmerized by the silence!
Awesome ceremony! I loved how during the presentation of the countries, some of them were waving American flags alongside their own. Shows the unity of the world :)
I agree with you
Excelente ceremonia de inauguración 😎👍
Qual será a próxima cerimonia de abertura
I always liked the tribute to past Olympic hosts!
I’m from Utah I remember my parents were at the opening ceremony and I remembered I was 1 year old when this happened thanks for uploading
Greetings From Utah
I haven't seen the Opening Ceremony when I was about five years of age. But now that I enjoyed this for the first time, even the fireworks show was amazing.
Howdy from Texas USA 🇺🇸
2:07:11--"On behalf of a proud, determined, and grateful nation, I declare open the Games of Salt Lake City, celebrating the Olympic Winter Games."
I always love that part so much.
@@sarakeith2246 Bush actually added the first part to the official opening speech because the Salt Lake City Games took place in the wake of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
@@PCCphoenix
Oh I didn’t watch the speech about that.
Because I didn’t watch that opening ceremony on tv.
Because I was only eight years old when that happened.
But I shall look it up.
Thanx.
Thank's Olímpic Channell
