The Watergate scandal was orchestrated by a U.S. president who thought he was above the law, Richard Nixon. The actual break-in happened early in the morning on June 17, 1972. One of the burglars, G. Gordon Liddy, was arrested and sentenced to between six and twenty-six years in prison. Even though Nixon had planned the break in and was basically a criminal, he still won the election by a landslide. The only state his opponent won was Massachusetts. After Richard Nixon stepped down from the presidency, Gerald Ford became president and pardoned Nixon. Later, when Jimmy Carter got into office he pardoned G. Gordon Liddy.
In 1972, Richard Nixon was the incumbent running against his Democratic opponent, George S. McGovern. The purpose of the break-in was to place wiretaps on the phones of the Democratic campaign headquarters. According to Sonia Benson, in May 1972, G. Gordon Liddy and his team broke into the Watergate Hotel. Liddy’s team couldn’t intercept a signal, so they broke in again in June and got arrested. (Benson) Five men were arrested in the Watergate complex. (“Watergate Scandal”) The men who were arrested were charged with burglary, conspiracy, and wiretapping. G. Gordon Liddy was sentenced to between six and twenty six years in prison. (Benson) The info about the break-in didn’t make headlines until January of 1973. (Scroth)
At first, the break-in wasn’t getting much coverage, and Nixon was doing a good job of covering himself up.
Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were some of the most famous journalists between 1972 and 1976 in America. Woodward and Bernstein were young journalists for the Washington Post at the time the Watergate Scandal was happening. They were famous for breaking the biggest story in American politics, which was the Watergate Scandal. Solely because of them, forty White House officials resigned, along with Richard Nixon himself. Carl Bernstein was the first person to suspect that Nixon was involved with the Watergate Complex break-in. The work of Woodward and Bernstein was called “maybe the single greatest reporting effort of all time.” The work of Woodward and Bernstein in the Washington Post was regularly denounced by Nixon’s election campaign. In October of 1972 the White House Press Secretary said their reporting was hearsay and guilt by association. Later, in May of the next year the Press Secretary apologized and said that Woodward and Bernstein deserved the credit for what they had done.(“Full Biography”) Two years after the break-in, Carl Bernstein wrote the book All the President’s Men. One year later, Bernstein’s book was made into a movie.
On July 13,1973, Alexander Butterfield revealed that there were White House tape recordings. (“The Watergate Story”) Alexander Butterfield was the Deputy Assistant to Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1973. On July 18th, 1973, Richard Nixon had the taping system disconnected. (The Watergate Story) A few days later, Nixon refused to turn over the presidential tape recordings. Nixon eventually realized that he should turn over the tapes. When the tapes were being inspected, an 18 ½ minute gap was found in the White House tapes. The House committee voted by large margins to recommend impeachment. On April 30th, 1974, The White House released more than 1,200 pages of the Nixon tapes. On July 24th, 1974, the Supreme Court ruled that Nixon must turn the tapes in. The supreme court decided 8-0 that executive privilege did not apply to the White House tapes. On August 8th, 1974, Richard Nixon became the first U.S. President to resign. In September of 1974, Gerald ford chose to grant Nixon a full pardon for the crimes he had committed. At this point, everyone knew that what Nixon did was wrong and that he did the right thing when he resigned.
