    The Finns are a really popular army in Bolt Action but Warlord doesn’t make plastics for them. I’d love to see some kitbashes (and painting guides) for some Continuation war rifle squads, maybe using blitzkrieg infantry? And also Kaukopartio SMG squads (which can outflank into the opponents deployment) maybe using the German SS body’s with smocks painted as snow suits? Think there’s a distinct lack of tutorials for painting the Finnish infantry here on CZcams and it unfortunately makes them a hard Army for beginners to get into.

    Effectively on the Eastern front Axis'forces equipments where less omogeneous than in the Western one, after all an immense quantity of russians' materials had been captured in early months of Barbarossa, so it wasn't uncommon seeing troops with captured gears. I saw an old finnish movie (don't remember the name) about the retreat from Carelia, and most of them had PPShs, plus don't forget the great"The Cross of Iron", where James Coburn's squad had a mix of german and russian equipments.
    Great idea for a conversion of a (not so) minor army!

      Most likely KP-31 Suomi SMGs instead of PPSh-41 SMGs... Look kinda similar but since KP-31 is finnish SMG and the film is made in Finland they used KP-31s.

    Really enjoy the historical miniatures. I love all the others, especially the non GW sci-fi, but the historical minis are fun to watch especially with the little tidbits of history on the uniforms and such.

    For the Finnish summer uniform, I’ve seen medium sea grey, highlighted with sky grey recommended (both Vallejo Model Color).

    The figure looks great! I always thought the Finland/Soviet war was an interesting subject so now all you need to make is a Finnish Stug III to go along with the figures. I liked this tutorial because you went thought the entire process which is very helpful. Thanks for sharing this.

    Great job, nice bit of kitbashing there and a very interesting watch.
    I've never attempted painting fire - any flamethrowers with fire shooting out the end I find too intimidating! Think I could copy those techniques.

      Most important thing about painting fire is that the fire is the brightest on the Inside.. which is the complete opposite of how we usually paint miniatures (shading the recesses etc). I base my flame with Averland Sunset. Then try and essentially “wash” the flame with Flash Gitz Yellow. This makes all the recesses super bright yellow.. (might take 3-4 coats). Then dry brush over with several colours covering less and less area each time working your way out to the tips. Firstly, start again with a dry brush of Averland Sunset, followed by Fire Dragon Bright, followed by a light Drybrush of Mephiston Red, then lastly with Abaddon Black. I find that having a small amount of black really helps sell the look of smoke and fire. Good luck!

    Those German winter figures are ever useful. Theres a video out ther of somerone using them to do Romanians. Damn useful for many a Southern Russian game. There was a Croat formation in the thick of the Stalingrad party - fought like devils apparently. Once again a great vid.

      I've seen them used to make just about everything. One chap even used modelling putty to put gaiters around the ankles and covered the Y-strap on the back with a British pack and voila, British winter kit. 😂

    This is a great job and I am going to happily steal this, especially since Winter Soviets on Amazon are under $33/box right now. Two of them and 2 German winter boxes will get me a good Finnish Army. My question then, for the kitbash, is what is a good thing to do with all the Soviet bodies and German arms/weapons? I could almost see it being done as a Stalingrad Soviet Winter force with a bunch of stolen weapons, or even, with German helmets, winter Bulgarians or Hungarian, but the uniforms aren't quite good enough, personally. Decent if you just want to field a force, but nothing spectacular.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 2 lety +1

      If you've got Soviet bodies and German heads and weapons, could make them up as a mob of Osttruppen pressed into service on the eastern front. The greatcoats you could even paint up for Osttruppen manning the Atlantic Wall, they're not so massively different that with limited equipment and resupply it'd look out of place.

    I’ll have to do some research to confirm, but the Warlord Finnish paint guide has a number of different colors for things than you used. Any reason you made the choices you did? (Maybe you know something I don’t) 😉

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  Před 2 lety +3

      Matter of taste, I guess. I haven't seen the Warlord guide, so I couldn't really say what's different. This just seemed to most closely match Osprey colour notation and what reenactors are wearing.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio

      It'd probably not do a great amount over so much dark material. Straight Agrax Earthshade would likely give a better result.
