  • When choosing a career, there’s a lot more to it than just salary. You’ll have to consider the type of work you’ll be doing, career advancement opportunities (both vertically and laterally), the work-life balance and so much more. As I was choosing my specializing in engineering, it took me nearly a year to put together that mining engineering could be the right choice for me.

    Hi, really liked how you covered the subject! I'm first year Mining/Petroleum engineering student. So far I like all the aspects of work and nature of lifestyle, but I wonder if it is possible to commit to swimming with such a career? I know in many camps there are gyms but I wouldn't like sacrificing a sport I love because of a career if possible.
    You said in the video there is a variety of jobs that you can work in the industry. Do you have any suggestions on how could I sustain a work/life balance involving both a career in mining or petroleum engineering and hitting a pool consistently?
    Thank you in advance ☺️

    • @KwanFung
      @KwanFung  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes It's possible, but you'll need to be selective in choose your jobs. For example, you can apply to FIFO jobs and swim in your days off, since on your working days, gyms probably won't have swimming pools. Alternatively, you can work at mining towns such as Fort McMurray, where there are swimming pools.

    • @SecretSickle89
      @SecretSickle89 Před rokem +1

      A lot of mine sites (in Australia at least) have pools on camp. Only the smaller sites don’t. If you work for a larger company like Rio Tinto or BHP they are almost always guaranteed to have swimming pools.
      But mining is a serious business, you have human lives to factor into your work. I have seen plenty of engineering blunders that took the lives of hard working miners. If you’re main concern is a swimming pool maybe mining engineering isn’t for you lol

      Canada is facing a shortage of mining engineers, so your age won't likely affect your hiring outcomes. Your law degree won't matter much if you apply to mining engineering jobs, as it is usually work experience that matters. There may be certain jobs where a combination of law + mining engineering background may be useful, but i think those are rare

      It depends what kind of mine you go too, what phase the mine is currently in (at the beginning of its life cycle for example, you wouldn’t be on-site very much) and what you’re degree specialises in.
      Having said all of that mining engineers are typically very hands-on, working on-site (fly in fly out) and will very often go into the mine to inspect the work area so they can come up with realistic and most importantly, safe planning for work orders.
      It’s a mix between desk work and going into the mine to work on your plans and problem solving, which a lot of people love.
