Here we are! The War that started them all! The first ever Heat of the first ever War. Jeremy Clarkson presents, Johnathon Pearce commentates and Philippa Forrester interviews the teams.
I remember when this was on the air, Nemesis (whom everyone in our household, called "the ladybug") competed several times; and each time seemed to end up with it catching fire. For some reason, its roboteers seemed to love watching it go up in flames, as much as we did.
I loved this show when it aired, watched it every week, Roadblock and chaos (and2) were my absolute favorite robots Sgt.Bash was my fave houserobot though.. The UK version is by far the best, same goes for Top Gear.. when Jeremy and crew was still doing that, that is.
And here we see the Team Nemesis fur being punished for the first time. I think it's funny to hear Jonathan Pearce comment that "a robot could choke on a furball" considering what Diotoir would do to Tornado and THEIR vertical flywheel weapon during the 5th wars. Weird that they ruled Nemesis out just because the fur was on fire, though, considering what a running gag it would become in later wars. Unless there's a lot of stuff we didn't get to see, Nemesis should have still been mobile so that should have gone to the judges. Man, Bash's saw sucked! No surprise they eventually removed it altogether! That was ultimately a pretty good heat. I seem to recall I heard once that after shooting the whole series they decided to air this episode first because it was the best one, as well as the one that produced the ultimate series 1 champion.
@BBCRobotwarsUK Refbot was in Series 4, but the making of him started in Semi Final B of Series 3. That was only the chassis. The moving parts were actually added last, but they were made after the chassis.
Whenabouts did this first air...? I became completely obsessed by this program. I videotaped every episode and watched them constantly and saw hypondisc's first fight live, along with the grand finals of 4, 5 and 6 :)
The buzzsaw that goes flying in the second match was a few centimetres away from decapitating Clarkson, hench why he says "I need to be 500 miles away from this" in the next round lol
@seasoner13 Actually Bash's saw became pretty much redundant in later series as they instead decided to upgrade his front claws; pushing the canister used for the flamethrower back in the body meaning that there was no room for the blade's mechanics. It became basically an ornamental piece. Although it never really did any real damage anyhow.
@BBCRobotwarsUK Health and safety wasn't as much of an issue back in the late 90's. I'm guessing cease was called because enouh damage had been sustained for Nemesis to go out.
Nemesis were completely tortured in the arena! Fur shredded everywhere and their eye cut off by Sgt Bash, I remember in the 1st wars highlights VHS where unseen footage was shown is that after the semifinals Philippa checked Road Black to see a hole pierced on the side, likely came from Nemesis! Killertron was a great robot, unlucky in the final though. Shogun may have had technical failures but still fought.
Did anyone notice the Killertron vs Shogun fight was edited? At 4:41 Killertron hits Shogun with the pointed end of it's axe, but when it comes down again at 4:48 it's the flat end. That means they must have edited out some point where Killertron turns round.
Because Pussycats blade disintergrated far more violantly, and they felt that the height which some of the peices went into the air could mean that the audience was in danger despite the screens. A similar thing happened in the heavyweight rumble of Battlebots Series 5, where a tooth from Nightmares disc actually landed in the audience.
I don't know what episode the Roadblock team have been watching....Killertron were not being cocky. I mean, you can hardly mistake a pink robot for Mortis.
I always felt that Diotoir and Nemesis were at a huge disadvantage because minor damage from grazing a wall showed up much more on them... and if they ever caught fire they would get significantly penalised. :/
been watchin a later series on tv lately and you can really tell the veterans because all newbies to it have silly things like these that cant do anythin but the veterans, havin been there done that know what it takes to win eg razor and hypnodisc the 2 greatest apart from sir killalot
Different Eras, but I wonder how Mechavore would do against this lot. Or rather, how long would everyone last against that bot? Mechavore has no srimech, but it has an intensely powerful spinning disc that is capable of slicing through nearly anything like it was butter including titanium and thick lexan protective walls.
Could happen now as the BBC sold the rights to the show and the house robots to one of the UK's largest robot battle shows (who have since renamed themselves Robot Wars).

It’s amazing seeing how far robots have come since this series! Even the worst of the newest bots would dominate in series 1 easily.

No, that was in seson 3, when Pussycat's blade shattered on the arena floor.The blades of that kind were then banned for safety reasons.

the gauntlet was really boring glad they scrapped that, great to see these golden oldies from my childhood again though, loving the new series!

Jeremy didn't fit the show at all, I could however watch Top Gear and Robot Wars forever and be happy
It's amazing how weak this is compared to current Battlebots. But this is how I would expect things to start.
