Tasmania Set To Become One Giant Windfarm

  • Endemic to Tasmania, the Cider Gum, was used by Tasmanian aboriginals who distilled its sap into an alcoholic drink. By boring into its bark they drained the sticky substance into pools left to ferment, which according to Aboriginal negotiator George Augustus Robinson it tasted much like the drink apple cider.
This tree was photographed by local historian Robert Onfrey, as part of his extensive research in the Surrey Hills area, and is located in an area known as Thomsons Park.
Sadly the Tasmanian government does not recognise the significance of this tree, and plans to turn the area into a giant wind farm.
This new project is called the Renewable Energy Zone, or REZ, and if it’s the first time you’ve heard of it, you’re not alone.

Because, unfortunately we have no power anymore. The lie of the two party system, left vs right, liberal vs labor etc gives the peasant the illusion of choice. Its all two sides of the same tarnished coin
We have seen it before and will see it again, politicians get on their soap box and promise to deliver however, they (rarely) never do. The corporate oligarchy and political lobbyists are the ones who get to choose what happens, as they ensure to only push people into power who will do their bidding.
We see it on a grand scale, with countries abroad, those who do not toe the line, are simply removed.
No longer does our vote matter, no longer is our voice heard. We can protest, scream on the streets, demand change, and write all the letters to our local members that we want. The fact remains that until money is removed from politics, until our (so called) elected officials cease getting half million dollar paychecks, private cars and drivers, free business class flights around the world and a pension that is on average 200,000.00 per year for life, we are going to be stuck in this system.
The fact is, that the powers that be want us to return to a corporate feudalistic society, where there are the modern day lords and ladies, kings and queens, who take all the money through taxation at every step, and leave just enough crumbs in the pile of shit they leave behind to keep the peasants just comfortable and distracted enough not to revolt to the point where we drag these people from their homes and string them up on the closest cider tree and hang the lot of them

Don't let them do it guys. You must stand up for the fauna and flora that doesn't have a voice for itself. I grew up in the most remote part of the Eastern Scottish Borders there was. All gone. We were forced from the home and land my Father rebuilt, from four walls and thousands of acres of wild land was devastated, around us. My last and dream home in the last remaining wilderness on the West coast of the Scottish Borders, I rebuilt myself, got forcibly taken from me two years ago. There are no wild areas left. You can't remake these in 20 years. Wind, Solar, the pylons and storage and access infrastructure, have proven t be inefficient and detrimental to the upper wild lands and flooding in the lower places. Here, they completely disregarded 900 years of history and ancient settlements. Please, anyone who has half a clue about the loss of wild habitat and generational devastation that ensues, DO SOMETHING to stop this, NOW.

Everyone should be against wind turbines, solar panels and backup batteries. They are destroying the global environment. Vast areas of land are being raped because this form of energy generation is the lowest density of all energy generators. You need large numbers of renewables projects to even attempt to equate to coal, gas or nuclear and even then you don't get any energy at all if the wind isn't blowing or the sun isn't shining. The various components of this infrastructure last between ten and twenty years and at end-of-life they are typically being buried.
Renewables are not clean, green, sustainable, reliable or ethical. What they are doing across Australia with the roll-out of renewables is nothing short of criminal.

Collie was shut down because of "coal" generated pollution & green house gases & now there will be up to 10,000 acres of wind turbines at three sites in what is farmland surrounding the coal mines. Happened in 1976 when Gough Whitlam signed Australia to the UN as a state. Then in 1984 the then government implemented the Australia Act which changed the onus of our (the people) constitutional right to govern the government to the government rules the people. They replaced the red covered actual volume of our constitution into a glass case. They now use the amended version with the green cover. In fact, Whitlam committed treason punishable by death when he signed us to a foreign power. When they usurped our constitution with the Australia Act version this was treasonous as well. They also removed the teaching of our constitution from schools so future generations do not know their true rights. The green version of our constitution is unlawful. Any changes to our constitution must be brought to the people for a referendum. Back in the mid 80's there was a referendum whether to go republic and the public voted a resounding NO. But instead, the government illegally placed the Australia Act. Just like they are doing when we voted a NO to the Voice only to do it through the back door. Just like they did with the Australia Act.

I guess the main point is that none of this benefits most Tasmanians. It is entirely to supply the mainland so that they can continue burning coal but simultaneously greenwash what they are doing by bumping their supply with Tassie renewables. It also means we pay exorbitant prices for our electricity which should be dirt cheap by comparison to the mainland. But, agreed, if not hydro or wind, the what is the green energy solution. Also, I don't know why those farmers in the North are facing compulsory acquisition of their land when they could be profiting. I live in the Central Highlands. I have friends who farm on very marginal land and are only making $30K to $40K a year on their farms. They are having 6 wind turbines installed on their land and will receive $40K per turbine per year.

Nonsense. We need to develop next generation nuclear which takes up very little land, reactors last closer to 80 years and not the 20 for wind turbines. Plus nuclear does not kill threatened birds. Even around Chernobyl nature is thriving, because radiation eventually decays and the plants and animals benefit after the humans run away.

Hey Rob, I really like the investigative feel and information you've put together in the video. Considering your opposition to this wind farm, I'd really like to get your opinion on the logging of old growth forest in Tassie. Not trying to take the piss, but as an Aussie living outside Tasmania I'm curious to know why a wind farm, which will have far less impact on the environment and it's flora and fauna than the regular logging of centuries old trees is so controversial?
Don't get me wrong, wind farm developers need to be held accountable every step of the way, and in the majority of cases the landowners actually want the turbines on their land because they get paid a yearly sum per turbine. If you look at mainland Australia most farmers are lining up to get them installed because it means a steady income in a future where the weather (and rain?) is anything but. I know it's tough when it's your own backyard but what would you rather, wind turbines or a nuclear reactor / coal-fired power station?

Also the amount of nuclear waste generated in 50 years by half a dozen small modular nuclear reactors would fit into a few shipping containers. Disposal, Australia has a vast inland area that is not only geologically stable but also has scant rainfall and not subject to danger of aquifer intrusions. The current major artesian basins are well mapped. We have an advanced group of mining engineers, geologists and highly experienced hard rock miners to create a disposal 'vault'. Just a few holding the whole thing back with the 'Not in my backyard attitude'
