The bread and salt thing - they shared bread and salt with Walder Frey, thus invoking "guest rights". This means that guests are safe during their stay and under Frey protection. In the books - because of this solemn tradition, the Starks removed their arms, It was inconceivable to anyone that the Freys would carry out this atrocity. What happened was not just a massacre, it went way deeper than that. The tradtion is still with us today in some form or fashion. When you have guests today, you always offer then something to eat or drink when they enter your home. At least this is the tradition in my country and family. When I watched the I knew exactly how horrendous it was, on multiple levels.

You called it when Rob executed Lord Karstark. But he was right when he said “I believe you lost the war the day you married her (Talisa).” You could also argue the war was lost when Cat released Jaime, as that was the real beginning of the turmoil in Robb’s camp.

    • @lemonicetea2642
      @lemonicetea2642 Před 2 lety +7

Robb needed to execute Lord Karstark though, he openly belittled, disrespected and disobeyed Robb, he needed to die. If Robb hadn't executed him his sworn swords and bannermen would've viewed him as weak and most likely would've plotted to over throw him, it also would've opened the door to others thinking it was alright to walk all over him and disobey his orders. Killing Karstark had made major issues but keeping him alive also did too.

I'm gonna say this cause i know you like to know some curiosities that happens only in the book. And also cause i think its cool.
When Catlyn made that arrangement with the Freys in the books, a part from Robb marrying with one of Walder's daughters, there was also two boys that was sent to Winterfell to be raised as squires as part of the arrangement, and one of them was to marry Arya. In Bran chapters, he mentions a child game those boys played called "Lord of the Crossing" which is basically a game of betrayal. The players goal is to cross the river (can be just a puddle) and the "Lord" has to make them swear oaths and answer questions. But, if the players find a way to include the word "mayhaps" in their sentences without the "Lord" notice, you can throw the Lord in the water and be the next Lord.
When Robb is trying to forge an aliance again with the Freys by marrying Edmure, Walder says to him:
"I need to see my men across the river, my lord," Robb said.
"They shan't get lost," Lord Walder complained. "They've crossed before, haven't they? When you came down from the north. You wanted crossing and I gave it to you, and you never said 𝐦𝐚𝐲𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐬, heh. But suit yourself. Lead each man across by the hand if you like, it's naught to me."
"My lord!" Catelyn had almost forgotten. "Some food would be most welcome. We have ridden many leagues in the rain."
Walder Frey's mouth moved in and out. "Food, heh. A loaf of bread, a bite of cheese, 𝐦𝐚𝐲𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐬 a sausage."
He says "mayhaps" twice, first to Robb and second to Catlyn, already showing his intention to betray the Starks and the Tullys.

The 3 major mistakes of the Starks in this war:
    1. freeing Jaime
    2. Not marrying Walder freys daughter
    3. Killing lord Karstark
Any one of those things doesn’t happen and Robb maybe wins. Honorable mention to trusting Theon because it was the Greyjoy’s invading the north that allowed Tywin to focus on Stannis. The quote from Tyrion in season 2 “our enemies hate each other almost as much as they hate us” is really what saved the lannisters. If they could’ve just focused on beating the lannisters rather than fighting each other there would’ve been no contest

In the show you first hear the full song when Bronn and the Lannister soldiers are singing it right before Blackwater. At the end of that episode you hear the marching tune of that song as Tywin makes his legendary entrance in the throne room. Then a whole season later Cersei tells Maergery about the story of House Reyne. The foreshadowing is there in bits and pieces. But everytime so much else is going on it is designed to make those little bits of info feel trivial. Everyone always focus on Joffrey doing something terrible at the Sansa Tyrion wedding, but that one ends up being a red herring. This is the one. "And now the rains weep o'er his hall, with not a soul to hear". System of a Down's Serj Tankian has a live orchestral performance of Rains of Castamere that you can find on youtube. It's so good. It's one of my favorite piece of music from the GoT verse.

18:42 Among skin-changers north of the Wall, it is considered an abomination to take over someone else's mind.
Moreover, it is a very difficult act to do so. In the books, a powerful skin changer "Varamyr Sixskins" tries to do this and it almost kills him.
Varamyr is considered the most powerful warg among the wildlings and he fails to do so.
Bran, however, who has no real control over his abilities yet, manages to do so, which shows that Bran has so much more powerful potential than any other skin changer out there and he is more than just a warg.
In the books, by the way, all Stark children have warg abilities.
We read in the chapters of Jon and Arya when they dream at night that they then take over their direwolves. Arya even manages to do this from miles away. Unlike Bran, however, this happens unconsciously and uncontrolled.
Robb and Rickon have the abilities as well, even though we don't read about them.
Sansa probably has these abilities too, only they were never unleashed because her direwolf died so young.
The difference with Bran is that he's also a greenseer.

I always think just how dumb it would've been for Robb to survive this. Yet it gives you that one little unreasonable flicker of hope during the last scene. It's partly due to my own subconscious expectation of the protagonist McGuyvering his way out of the trickiest situation, and partly due to the sheer conviction in Cat's voice. Her high pitched acting in that scene is more reminiscent of a Shakespeare Broadway play than normal TV acting, but it works, probably cause the whole scene feels like a fever dream. But there's that one millisecond when Cat screams "LET HIM GO" and I unreasonably think it might actually happen. It's the conviction in her voice I guess. And then of course, it doesn't. It's similar to when Arya sees Greywind and everyone automatically goes "oh she's gonna free him". But it's GoT. The dog dies too lol.

Happy you and the family are better and back, bro.
Remember back when Jon got his assignment to the Stewards and he got bent about it? He said to Sam, "But, I always wanted to be a Ranger." And Sam replied, "I've always wanted to be a Wizard." And now, here's Gilly saying, "You're like, a Wizard."
Arya's a big beast in a tiny package.
Did you detect the hurt in Jorah's eyes when Daenerys showed her concern for Dario? Jorah's caught feelings for Daenerys.
The Red Wedding! That's some hard sh*t right there! George R.R. Martin don't pull no punches...no plot armor in George's storytelling. I feel your pain, bro. I think this was one of the hardest hitting scenes I've ever watched. It's impossible *not* to feel it deeply. But you've got some great instincts...they were right. About his marriage to Talisa coming back to haunt him. About not trusting Lord Bolten, but that is ginda a given. Yeah, this was a hard hit to come back for, bro. But I'm not gonna BS you, season four is the *BEST* season, hands down. So hang in there, man.

Interesting fact. Remember when I said these books were loosely based on the War of the Roses? In the mini series the White Princess, which is based on historical fact. One of Richard the 3rds war leaders was playing both sides too. He appeared to be on Richards side during a key battle. but at a key moment in the battle, he switched to Henry the 7th's side and that helped turn the tide of the battle. Sort of just like what Bolton did here.

A Storm of Swords - Catelyn VII :
"Heh," Lord Walder cackled at Robb, "the King in the North arises. Seems we killed some of your men, Your Grace. Oh, but I'll make you an apology, that will mend them all again, heh.
Catelyn grabbed a handful of Jinglebell Frey's long grey hair and dragged him out of his hiding place. "Lord Walder!" she shouted.
"LORD WALDER!" The drum beat slow and sonorous, doom boom doom. "Enough," said Catelyn. "Enough, I say. You have repaid betrayal with betrayal, let it end."
When she pressed her dagger to Jinglebell's throat, the memory of Bran's sickroom came back to her, with the feel of steel at her own throat.
The drum went boom doom boom doom boom doom.
"Please," she said. "He is my son. My first son, and my last. Let him go. Let him go and I swear we will forget this . . . forget all you've done here. I swear it by the old gods and new, we . . . we will take no vengeance . . ."
Lord Walder peered at her in mistrust. "Only a fool would believe such blather. D'you take me for a fool, my lady?"
"I take you for a father. Keep me for a hostage, Edmure as well if you haven't killed him. But let Robb go."
"No." Robb's voice was whisper faint. "Mother, no . . ."
"Yes. Robb, get up. Get up and walk out, please, please. Save yourself . . . if not for me, for Jeyne."
"Jeyne?" Robb grabbed the edge of the table and forced himself to stand. "Mother," he said, "Grey Wind . . ."
"Go to him. Now. Robb, walk out of here."
Lord Walder snorted. "And why would I let him do that?"
She pressed the blade deeper into Jinglebell's throat. The lackwit rolled his eyes at her in mute appeal. A foul stench assailed her nose, but she paid it no more mind than she did the sullen ceaseless pounding of that drum, boom doom boom doom boom doom. Ser Ryman and Black Walder were circling round her back, but Catelyn did not care.
They could do as they wished with her; imprison her, rape her, kill her, it made no matter. She had lived too long, and Ned was waiting. It was Robb she feared for.
"On my honor as a Tully," she told Lord Walder, "on my honor as a Stark, I will trade your boy's life for Robb's. A son for a son." Her hand shook so badly she was ringing Jinglebell's head.
Boom, the drum sounded, boom doom boom doom. The old man's lips went in and out. The knife trembled in Catelyn's hand, slippery with sweat. "A son for a son, heh," he repeated. "But that's a grandson . . . and he never was much use."
A man in dark armor and a pale pink cloak spotted with blood stepped up to Robb. "Jaime Lannister sends his regards." He thrust his longsword through her son's heart, and twisted.
Robb had broken his word, but Catelyn kept hers. She tugged hard on Aegon's hair and sawed at his neck until the blade grated on bone. Blood ran hot over her fingers. His little bells were ringing, ringing, ringing, and the drum went boom doom boom.
Finally someone took the knife away from her. The tears burned like vinegar as they ran down her cheeks. Ten fierce ravens were raking her face with sharp talons and tearing off strips of flesh, leaving deep furrows that ran red with blood. She could taste it on her lips.
It hurts so much, she thought. Our children, Ned, all our sweet babes. Rickon, Bran, Arya, Sansa, Robb . . . Robb . . . please, Ned, please, make it stop, make it stop hurting . . . The white tears and the red ones ran together until her face was torn and tattered, the face that Ned had loved.
Catelyn Stark raised her hands and watched the blood run down her long fingers, over her wrists, beneath the sleeves of her gown. Slow red worms crawled along her arms and under her clothes. It tickles. That made her laugh until she screamed. "Mad," someone said, "she's lost her wits," and someone else said, "Make an end," and a hand grabbed her scalp just as she'd done with Jinglebell, and she thought, [ No, don't, don't cut my hair, Ned loves my hair. ]
Then the steel was at her throat, and its bite was red and cold.
