  • “Street art truly transforms the perception of a place,” stated Yash Bhandari, a contributing artist. In Malleshwaram, one of Bengaluru, India's oldest planned neighborhoods, a captivating street art initiative aims to make the area more pedestrian-friendly. This project, named Malleshwaram Hogona (“Let’s go to Malleshwaram”), was initiated by Bengaluru Moving, which promotes sustainable mobility throughout the city. The project was executed in collaboration with the local artist collective Geechugalu, the urban planning organization Sensing Local, the Residents Welfare Association Malleshwaram Social, and volunteers.
Street art is a rare sight in a traditional area like Bangalore, and what is remarkable about this art tour is how seamlessly local stories are incorporated into the site-specific artworks: local sampige flowers decorating a wall; "Malleshwaram" boldly written in both English and Kannada, filled with familiar local imagery; a depiction of a Malleshwaram woman enjoying filter coffee. Some artworks were integrated directly into homes, rejuvenating their facades, while others appeared on the walls of institutions and within the lively flower market.
