Can get a big plastic tank like used for soaps, clorine and such things has a lid on top spout with a tap on the bottom and a aluminium cage around it :) most have a plast pallet under them with holes for forks so when you finally get a tractor for your saw mill you can use that to move tha tank ;)

For your door. You can always cut your door in half horizontally. That way if you get a lot of snow you can still open the top part of the door and get in or out. We do that with our cabins up in the mountains in Norway ;)

  • @TomWood60
    @TomWood60 Před měsícem +10

Just a suggestion. You should mortise your hinges, locks and strike plates. The squeaking from your door is the hinges over compressing the on themselves. Clear finish is nice but has less UV protection than a colored stain and will gray more quickly. For the door stop they have both peel and stick as well as stops that are nail on. I would buy stock windows so if something fails you have a source or replacement parts. A window store should be able to sell you Andersen or other top brands. Spending money on custom windows in a cabin is a complete waste of money, especially when you do not need a specific size. In fact when we were looking for windows for a cabin addition we bought leftover Andersen windows from a window store. This is a guest cabin not your forever home. With the money you save rent a skid steer and improve the ATV trail to the cabin of buy materials for your sawmill shed.

Don't change the tilt on the door sill. The door will still swing in and the water will run off the sill, When we made our own sills we used to make them from Oak and they were cut and planned with the slope in them so water would run away from the house. The sills we made did have a flat spot right at the door to floor part of the sill.

If considering building a new door. Consider getting a router to ship lap boards. On the interior side run 2x’s horizontal over the vertical lumber & trim out to the z brace. This will not only increase the strength of the door but will help seal air paths into cabin.
I’d keep the sill sloped but cut a flat top where door lands/resides.

I had a cabin in Alaska and was told that exterior cabin doors "should" swing out. The reason for this, at least in Alaska is that it can deter a bear from pushing the door open and go into the cabin. Now that is a generalization, but makes sense and I never had a bear break into my cabin. I'm sure this comment has opposing opinions, but I would leave it as is and you can always climb out a window in an emergency.

Build yourself a raft for the lake, and consider making a rain catcher/collector for whenever it rains. The amount of rain you've already gotten, it'd be smart to capitalize on the opportunity to catch, store and use that free water. For cleaning dishes, clearing your little tent patio, cooling off, watering a garden/plants, etc it's perfect.
Also as others have noted, the best thing to do for your door is to split it in half in the middle horizontally, so that the top half or third of the door opens as well so if you end up with a heap of snow, you can still get in and out without much issue.

Clearing an area all around your cabin has many benefits, two important ones are it gives you a fire brake you don’t really want trees within falling distance of the cabin and it helps with spotting bears and other predators around your cabin you don’t want any surprise attacks as you step out the cabin. 👍👍👍👍👍

I didn't read through all the comments to see if it was already suggested, but instead of replacing the end 2x8 on your door and re-milling your latch holes in a new wider board, couldn't you just replace one of the innner 2x8s with a larger one to move the end board out to the desired width. This would save yourself a lot of work and less wear and tear on your drill bits.

One way to make your ATV path more stable (without investing pretty much investing any money) could be that you would rent a branch shredder and make woodchips and then put those woodchips on the holes to balance the path. Cheap and ecologic way to consume (entire tree) those treebranches and same time cleaning the area a bit more. If you have extra gravel, you could mix woodchips and gravel as well. Slightly moist woodchips are easier to "install".

You will also need a wood shed for your firewood, gotta dry it and store it for the long cold winters, build it before you start knocking down more trees so you firewood goes directly into the shed saving you from moving it multiple times

Boiled linseed oil is indeed a bit dubious but as long as you take proper care it's fine to use.
    Just remember a few things.
    1. Its not just pure linseed oil that can make rags etc. spontaneously combust. Any wood oil containing boiled linseed oil can have the same effect.
    2. It's not just rags, brushes etc. that can S.C. Saw dust drenched in wood oil can also S.C.
    3. Leaving the stuff in sunlight is just speeding up the process but you could leave rags in a dark room and it might S.C anyway. The heat process comes from fibres in close proximity to one another when the oil dries. The many surface areas is what produces the heat.
When disposing of rags, cloth, brushes etc. Do one of the following:
    1. Drench the equipment in water for a few days. Then place them soaked in a closed plastic bag and throw it away acc. to local jurisdiction.
    2. My personal favorite. Burn the equipment in a controlled way. Sure it's not environmentally friendly but it ensures that it can never S.C.

Great Video! The homestead is coming along nicely!
Fun fact: In the mythology it's Loki and Odin who are brothers (blood brothers in some versions), Thor and Loki are brothers in the Marvel Universe and other modern interpretations of the sagas.

The oak looks fantastic! If you don't know the story of Loki's wager (with the dwarves) and how and why Sif got her golden hair, then please find it and read it. Epic story with the coolest trinkets, some you may know, some not. It's also one of those stories where we get to see Loki's intricate pesonality and relationship with the gods. Do note that Odin and Loki are bloodbrothers, and it is Odin who protects Loki among the gods, and in the end decides Loki's, shall we say fate. Odin being quite the rascal himself, enjoys Loki's antics and the gods do use this to their advantage against their foes the jötunn, Loki partly being one himself. Like when the walls of Valhalla was built - that's a good one too.
I love all your historical references and to me you serve the memory of the northern mythology well. It is after all not written in stone (could you imagine), so we do get to be a bit romantic about it. This just ads to the layer of awesomeness which is Wild Homestead 😁 Love from Denmark

If you end up needing to do another log cleaning cycle you should invest in a drill brush attachment. Would significantly cut down your time spent hand brushing and potentially do a better job. They are usually used for cleaning carpets in vehicles, but I do not see why they would not work for this application. Love the videos!

My grandmothers cabin had one worked well just with a padlock on it and only used it once. Just put it on any wall. Love what you are doing. Take care and stay safe and well. Love Vicki♥️♥️

You should look up how Biltong is made and set up a drying room one side for curing meat and you’ll be pretty shocked. Biltong can just be kept in a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
You want a meat snack and you don’t have a fridge? No problem.

Here's an idea for your next homemade exterior door frame. Exterior door frames have the 5/32" slot you mentioned. Next time either cut a rabbit on your door stop with a table saw or just squeeze the weather strip between your stop and the frame while you are screwing the stop to the frame.

I think you should just build your front porch as a screened in room (with shutters possibly) so that the snow won't come in as much. That way, you can leave your main door swinging out, and have a screen door to the porch that can swing in. This would give you a nice "mud room" style area that's bug free, and you'll keep a lot of them out of the main cabin as well.

I just got back from vacation and this is my first watch. It’s looking great.
Something I noticed, and I can’t see too well in the video, is that your hinge pins are on the outside of the door. You can lock it on the left, but someone can take your door off with a nail and a rock.
It’ll solve that if you move it to swing inside. The hinge pins will be inside the house at that point.
Just wanted to mention it, since they did the same on our house. We have full glass doors, though. Wasn’t much point in fixing it when they can break in with a rock from the driveway. Locks only keep out honest people.😊

James, I had the exact same thing happen to me with windows from HD. we redid our kitchen and had an order for a new French door and a window. wait time was supposed to be 16 weeks, door showed up ahead of time but the door was shipped after 20 weeks, said in transit for like 8 days (said it was coming from Winnipeg) after 8 days it said it delivered, called HD right away to let them know that I didn't receive it, just to be told that the window was smashed during transport. a new one had to be done, they didn't even rush it or anything, had to wait another 16 weeks to get it. our kitchen was almost completed before it showed up, had to frame the window and put plastic until it showed up, can't say I was very impressed by how it was handled. I agree with you, these standard size should be stock. keep up the good work !
