    ----------
A global phenomenon that has wowed audiences for over 40 years, Jesus Christ Superstar is a timeless work set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.
It was the first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage and first came to major theatres when it debuted on Broadway in October 1971 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York.
Less than 12 months after the Broadway show opened, the rock spectacle went to London, exploding onto the West End at the Palace Theatre in August 1972 in a hugely successful production. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Jesus Christ Superstar had become the longest running musical in West End history at the time and grossed $12.3 million.
In all, Jesus Christ Superstar has grossed over $205 million and has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world!

Also, the other apostles had to leave the women in their lives to be here. Peter, for example, had a wife he abandoned. Nothing makes you realize you're in a cult quicker than seeing the cult leader enjoy pleasures and privileges that the followers aren't allowed to have.

Well yeah. If you interpret the story in the Bible to be true. Then this was a guy that knew the leading days to his demise was going to filled with pain and anguish. And knowing that Judas would turn on him and not being able to stop any of this from happening because it was God's plan to reopen the gates of heaven to humanity, then its easier to understand that Jesus wasn't exactly himself at this point.

In the Bible there's different interpretations, the most anti-Judas ones are that he's greedy and would want to keep the money for himself, others are that it's Jesus knowing that he's not got long and just wants to make the most of the time he has left before Passion week and a horrible death,

@@aclark903 Judas is the point of view character in the musical. He gets the opening number and the finale. His choices drive the plot forward and his emotional state sets the tone for the show-even when he’s not on stage. The information the audience is given always lines up with what Judas knows-even to the point of the show using the Sanhedrin to reiterate Judas’s worries and confirm that he’s right to think Jesus and his followers are inviting danger upon themselves. He’s the character who has the most developed arc. Judas is the main character of JCS. He’s the protagonist. It makes sense that JCS is gonna show Judas in a more positive light than the Bible.

What kind of "bothers" me is that in the '73 version, Jesus seems conflicted, and sounded like he really loved Judas, like a brother, and was worried about him (all the movie, not only in this scene), and tried to teach him. Even Mary Magdalene seems worried about him too.
Here looks like Jesus is obsessed with her, and kind of bored about Judas and his actitud, like they were strangers or tired of each other.
For me, you have to give a chance to the '73 version too.

I don't think the word "sexualized" is the right word. It's obvious that Mary loves Jesus. But that was also established in "I Don't Know How To Love Him." I think it's because Mary is more touchy in this song. So, more intimate maybe, but not necessarily sexualized. At least, not in a vulgar way. Just my opinion.

What I love about this version (among many things) is the costume choices. Judas is always wearing red; he's the villain. At least in the Biblical sense. But this story always makes Judas to be sympathetic. Mary, at least in this version (in the 1973 version, she wear orange), wears red. She has turned Jesus away from what he was preaching; away from what Judas wants him to do. She is not the villain, but she is certainly not a hero in this story

What I don’t like about this version is that it makes it look as if Mary loved Jesus, and not in the “loving god” kind of way. Honestly it’s kind of creepy

Then look again at "I Don't Know How To Love Him" in any version. It's always been a part of this musical, in any version, that Mary loved Jesus in a romantic way. It also reminds us that Jesus was all God and all man. He faced every temptation, including sexual ones.

Judas Iscariot did complain about the oil that Mary Magdalene was using was so expensive and that he said in the book of Luke " Why are you wasting money on this expensive oil , that should be used to be given to the poor " but Jesus did replied to Judas " why do you bother her , the poor will always have you , but i won't always be here with you " he meant that Mary Magdalene anointed Jesus's head and feet with oil to prepare him for burial . which meant that Jesus Christ was going to die not only for their sins but for the sins of mankind

Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him,
Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein.
Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this.
For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always. JOHN 12
