  • Sawing a large Pecan log into flooring for a customer. I do encounter some problems along the way. Pecan is an exceptionally hard wood, so a blade change was necessary along the way. Thanks for watching. Check me out at: southernindianasawmill.com or on Facebook

      @@genobeano999
      We have forests, just not mature forests. Mature trees lie only within state and national forest. It is unfortunate. For example difficult to imagine, since 1750, every tree in Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, Alabama, etc have been cut down 4-5 times over. Regrowth for 30-40 years, then cut again. The oldest trees in national forests are only 300-400 years old.
      Also, American Chestnut trees dominated the landscape when Europeans first landed here. Ancient, huge, some over 1000 years old. Over 4 billion of them. 4 billion trees. Then, in the late 1800’s early 1900’s, a beetle from China was introduced. That beetle is responsible for killing the forests here in the US. Within 50 years of introduction, every single American Chestnut tree was killed. Every single one. The only Chestnut trees in the US today, are of Chinese origin, and have resilience to the beetle. So very sad. Google it. It is quite a story very few have knowledge of.

      I was painting a house for a woman one time and another crew came in an cut down a perfectly healthy pecan tree about that size and cut it up and hauled if off to dump in a ditch in a pasture, didn't even make barbeque firewood out it. Then they cut down two big red cedar trees and hauled them off as well. I didn't have the time or the equipment or I would have tried to step in and take care of that for her. Plus; she paid them to do it. Broke my heart.

    • @mickymidnight1
      @mickymidnight1 Před 5 lety

      Just guessing but I think there were only about 34 good lengths there say 6 inches wide ( but probably narrower) × say average length 11 foot ( could well be shorter though) so maximum 187 square foot

    • @mickymidnight1
      @mickymidnight1 Před 5 lety

      Say they boards were 5 inches wide & the average length of the 34 GOOD boards was only 8 & a half foot lonh, then square footage = 120 square foot :-)

Oh yeah that log is very appropriate to mill for some Beautiful wood floors. I guess when you get off your butt and work till you can afford a 30k mill and learn the trade.
