(Gen/GU bow info) Since coatings use an exclusive place in the bag, using paint coatings instead of paint balls means that you can have an extra slot on your bag for other things. Also since each bow limits the type of coatings you can use, you can always count on having space on your coating bag for paint coatings (I think there are a couple of exceptions though).
This things are not relevant on current generation since painting monsters is a dead mechanic xD, but that at least is my perspective when playing Gen/GU as a bow user.

    • @tonyngo1885
      @tonyngo1885 Před 3 lety +3

    Some things to note...
    - Close Range Coating, prior to Gen 5 (World), did not reduce your Critical Distance range. Your Shot Type's original Critical Distance is retained, but also has the added benefit of point-blank shots now being treated as being within Critical Distance. Think of it as extending your Critical Distance range. Close Range Coatings also gave your melee swing White Sharpness. You would, of course, almost never use this, but prior to Generations, which saw a change in how drops work so that tails could still be obtained without actually severing them, this was the only real option dedicated Bow Mains had for cutting tails, of which many were needed in forging armor.
    - Starting with Gen 5, Close Range Coatings became more important, not just for the changes done to themselves, but also the changes done to Power Coatings. In prior generations, CRC never gave a damage boost beyond White Sharpness for the melee swing. You needed to use Seregios' Bow in order to have Close Range Coatings behave like Power Coatings. Power Coatings used to give a 1.5x damage modifier; for World, both were changed. Power Coatings now only yield 1.35x while Close Range yields 1.17x and has infinite use. As SuperRAD mentioned, Gen 5's version of CRC does, in fact, reduce your original Critical Distance to point blank, meaning adjustment is mandatory.
The observed changes effectively made it so that a Bow no longer needs to have Power Coatings to be worth looking at unless you're speedrunning. In turn, a Bow user no longer becomes instant dead weight upon running out of Power Coatings before the target is slayed or captured. You can, of course, return to the tent and refill all your ammo anyway, but I prefer to recommend options that don't waste your time.
    - The Bushido/Adept Dodge did not grant you full charge; it only puts you at Level 3. If you had Load Up on a Bow, like the Teo Bow, which wanted to make use of its Level 4, you would need to wait half a second - quarter of a second with Haste Rain III - after beginning your charge to get to Level 4.
    - Our host got nothing wrong about the Great Kelbi Deershot, but I do want to point out that there was something even stronger - the Brachydios Bow. The reason why you never see people talk about that when bringing up the GKD is due to how the GKD is free power for literally no effort. The Brachy Bow, while a significantly better Slime Bow, actually requires you to play the game properly.
    - If you changed your coating during the animation for Absolute Readiness, the game automatically switches you to the newly highlighted coating. This was pretty cool even though you'd always take Haste Rain. Gen 5 changed things by just making the animation for loading coatings super quick, which we all appreciated.

The bow melee attack once gave me the idea for a monster that could have incomplete weapons, but crazy stats. For instance, its "Bow" would only be an arrow and you could only do melee attacks, but it would have the highest damage of all the bows of identical ranking and that by a significant amount. Or a charge blade that only has the sword and is thus unable to use phials or turn into axe form.

  • @Shadowslash1
    @Shadowslash1 Před 3 lety +6

Well, the idea behind the melee attack was 'to push small monsters away from you' and more importantly in the bow's case to cut off tails. But the damage from it was so small you would actively be checking to see if the tail is ready to be cut by running up and trying to cut it. I don't think I need to explain the problem there.
I actually gave the Bow a try in Freedom Unite since unlike the bowguns, the bow didn't run out of ammo. I just played around with it a bit really.
With Rise coming out next week (at time of writing this) I think it would be a good idea to take a moment and -tease the audience- talk about the 15th weapon type from Generations. A whole history on the evolution of the buddy system and how the palicos system has grown up into Rise where we now have palamutes, you could even throw in the guys from 3rd gen (I missed that gen due to personal issues). Because first off, I don't see there being 'that' big a change come Mar. 26 for the buddy system. Second, it means your next weapons can have the added info from the new game. In fact, the release of Rise Friday (at time of writing) might mean you would need to go back and add something to the other weapons since every weapon has one base weapon ability that can be swapped out.
If not the buddy system (with a history of Prowler would most likely entail) I think either Lance or Light Bowgun should be next. I really want IG to be last BECAUSE I enjoy it alot and think it would make a wonderful conclusion to this weapon history series.

Bow as a gunner weapon is easy for blademaster users to get into because the complexity is within the move set itself, much like any other weapon and skill wish is fairly easy to build for. Where as light and heavy bowguns have ammo types and what ammo type you want to use dictates your skills/attachments and even then you have deviation and recoil per ammo type, and ammo match ups/hit zone charts(something that requires a 3rd party) and that's not even touching elemental ammos lmao

Bow is the one weapon I never used well and actually actively avoided it in Gen and GenU. Compared to LBG (which is my prefered ranged option) I don't understand its camera setup, wildly swinging about as you move. Luckily, that was changed in World and Rise.
Other than the camera issues, I actually really want to try using bow, because it's such a mechanically interesting weapon. It's way more complicated than bowguns in my opinion, especially with the amount of multipliers it relies on for damage. We have critical distance, coating boosts AND charge boosts all of which have to be optimal, all while keeping an eye out for stamina AND having chosen a weapon with shot types that actually behave as you want (World was kinder in that regard).
Speaking of Hunting Horn, while most people say they can't remember their songs, I had that exact problem with shot types in older games.

Paint coating instead of paint balls for two reasons
1.- you don't need to pull out the bow and throw the paint ball

Back in Freedom 2 using a ranged weapon was nearly broken so much so that the "Gunner Master Race" meme was born.
Monsters did not know how to climb ledges and were at the mercy of being pelted by a merciless rain bullets and arrows while they hopelessly charged at you. Standing on ledges was helpful in quests that had 2 target monsters at the same time. It was relief on quests with 2 Diablos.
Then in Freedom Unite they nerfed the ledges. In arena quests they would put in those indestructible black rocks to block off the ledges and increased the size of entrances of some zones making a lot of ledges smaller or non existing. Many of the ledges in the Jungle and all of them in the Swamp disappeared in FU.
Then in 3rd Gen ledges became destructible. They were a still bit sturdy so you could get in a few free attacks.
Then in Gen 4 the Gunner Master Race died and were brought to the mortal level of Blademasters. Monsters could climb and jump ledges now to reach Hunters and the taller platforms were made fragile.

I always wanted the bow to switch between Rapid/Pierce/Spread at will and still keep the charge shots. Not a fan of the new spam bow, it’s good but not what i wanted.

Valor Mode with Bow also gave you "Focus" when standing still. And it even stacks with the actual Focus armor skill. With a bow with strong level 2 shots, you can basically rapid fire on monsters without needing too much stamina. If you can do hits super consistently (like when fighting slow targets like Gravios, and especially Lao), you can be in Valor Mode FOREVER because you gain valor gauge faster than it depletes. And that's even before using Haste Rain. :D

Very cool video, I really enjoyed it. I've played some bow in Freedom Unite and portable 3rd, before World launched and mained it in world. I gotta admit that I actually somewhat miss gunner armor, since I really enjoyed the look of it in older gens. I believe pretty much the only thing you might have missed are specific armor skills, mainly mighty bow (+1 maximum Bow Charge) comes to mind. Especially the World bow benefits insanely from the additional charge level, since it allows the player to have longer and stronger combos. For example you're able to open with a Quickshot, Rapidshot, Powershot, Rapidshot into Powershot.
I'm really hope that bow has access to the quickshot through the use of switch skills. I don't know how I feel abouth the different shottypes to be honest, since those could make or break otherwise really good bows and historically there often were maybe 1 or 2 viable endgame bows from what I heared. As the release draws closer I'm on the fence if I should use bow for the campaign, or try out the hunting horn which I really enjoyed in the demo so far.

Whereas the gun's's melee attacks can help stagger and knock over big monsters, the arrows melee is probably only useful for small and endemic creatures. Like the little rock lizards, touch it and it drops one thing, but hit it and you can get up to three, but knocking and aiming the bow would be kinda tedious

As a bow user from freedom unite on, I personally did not like the changes in world. It felt like it lost a lot of the strategy it had before and became more spammy. Using the dodges to charge, or the shots to charge, just didn't feel like the bow anymore. I hope that they have made a nice middle ground in rise for the bow, otherwise I will regrettably be switching weapons like I did in world (Hammer main for world). One thing, the light bowgun seems to be quite cool with its few additional moves in rise.

I wouldn’t count what I’m about to say as anything too notable, but in rise the 2 hit melee combo of bow actually has some use now for 2 reasons, 1. It has become bow’s most reliable source of cutting damage and 2. With the close range coating equipped, melee attacks have a 55% damage boost, making the 2 hit combo’s damage similar to some long sword hits, or maybe even stronger than some long sword hits as the damage numbers in the rise demo average out from 66 damage per hit to 73 damage per hit with the close range 2 hit melee combo.

You mention "restoring the backdive" in the GU Valor section, but don't really mention what it *is* despite being introduced in Generations; it's the ability to backhop twice in Guild Style (the 'default' style) in order to travel further back and also instantly go to maximum charge. ((Personally I tended to use Guild because I liked the amount of distance the backdive gave me - it usually let me put myself at a good critical distance while also baiting monster attacks - not to mention that I was a cheeky bugger who really liked to use the arrow melee to save on coatings so I would go in, slap them, then backhop>dive to pot shot them in the face when they turned around. Very fun, if perhaps not exactly meta.))
Additionally, in 4U, MANY new things were added the massively benefited gunners, Bow especially.
~ Camera controls were massively improved; camera was no longer shackled to the 'tiered' camera system, and could be freely and smoothly moved up and down. This is notable for multiple reasons relating to new functions added with this entry.
~ A toggleable Aim Mode was introduced that allowed you to keep aim mode on even when moving around without forcing your camera to look in the direction your hunter was moving or stop your hunter to a crawl to point directly forward, without having to hold the button; your camera would promptly snap back into aiming the moment you stopped.
~ Another function was added where some controls adjustable in the menus allowed for the hunter, as long as they were in Aim Mode, to automatically fire at a vertical angle relative to where your (newly-unshackled) camera was pointed even if you hadn't stopped to go into Aim Mode 'proper'. In practice this meant that, in previous entries where you had to stop in place to aim, high level hunters could simply have their camera pre-adjusted at the preferred angle and turn the hunter while releasing the nocked arrow, seriously cutting down on precious, precious time that would have otherwise been wasted.
~ A new control style was introduced that allowed for the hunter to hold R to charge the bow instead of the classic hold X to charge the bow, thus freeing up their thumb to move the camera around,
Some of these functions may have existed in some limited, lesser form in prior entries, but it wasn't until 4U that some new extra options and the unshackled camera made it all come together. From 4U onward, controlling the bow had become a very different beast to tackle, but with significantly greater benefits.
Granted World came along and overhauled everything again, but it all started with 4U.

On the topic of bow's melee attack.
In 2nd and 3rd gen it was used mainly as described in the video, but should only be done so when the monster is toppled or in a trap, and to dispatch small monsters. It would come in handy against Vespoids and Bnahabra when somehow evading was not an option or they were too close.
4U was when bow melee was at its best in my opinion. With the jumping attacks and mounting being introduced it made tail cutting easy when solo or in a group with cutting weapon users. Only really becoming ineffective in G-Rank and against Apex monsters.
    Edit:
In Generations it became fairly useless. The melee attacks honestly felt they were severely weakened. Jumping attacks were nerfed because of Aerial style and the jumping shooting attack from ledges did mounting damage as well and were more damaging as well.
In W:I its best to use the the Jumping Lunge attack when the monster is toppled and attack the head once or another part that is susceptible to mounting build up, then when the monster stands back up do it again and it nearly always results in a mount.

Love your documentaries man, btw, in MHRise, the switch skills for BOW gives hunters more reason to become even more aggressive.
The first Switch skill turns your aim dash into a melee hit aim dash that has a decent Invisibility frame that when timed with a monster attack, it can essentially negate incoming damage(can also be used against roars) and raises your next shot into the next level charge.
The second switch skill replaces the R+X backhop silkbind move into a vertical aerial maneuver that let's you fire 3 power shots downwards(and can be aimed).
The third switch skill transforms your power shots into absolute power shots, these power shots now deal KO damage and partners well with the Aerial Vault Bow Silkbind Move.
When used right, the Bow in the Rise Generation might just be the most interactive playstyle yet.
