  • My large male African Spurred Sulcata spur thigh tortoise is having fun in high definition HD. He is too big to fit though the door of the female's house. A big fat turtle! Be sure to but lots of sand on bottom of home because they love to dig a 3" deep hole to sleep in.

I have 2 sulcatas. eewee is 16" and my baby Mini is 21/2 inches. I love them. They are amazingly intelligent. In the Spring and Summer Eewee goes to the door to be let out. I keep his food bowl in a certain spot in the kitchen and when he hears me out in the kitchen he comes flying out there so I'll feed him. Ihave dogs and cats and he isn't the least bit afraid of them. he's very friendly exactly as you said. I bring him to my son's on Tuesdays when it's nice out and my 3 year old granddaughters love him. They put stickers on his shell, get down on the ground to look him in the eyesand pat him. He loves it. Can't wait for Mini to catch up,

What state do you live in?

Good setup, but they do need moisture. The sand in their houses should be kept damp (not wet) for sleeping. Less damp when cold. At least hose them down a little when it's hot. Just because they evolved in the Sahara region of Africa, doesn't mean they like to live in the desert. I do recognize your intentions are noble. Thanks for caring for the big boy.

Their beds should be dry, but they should have access to water. A dish big enough to crawl into is good, but make sure it is shallow so they don't drown.

A 20" Sulcata is probably between 10-12 years old depending on what you feed them. Mine was about 18" in the spring and he is about 12 years old now. He is a little smaller than average. In the winter he eats very little, but in the summer he is a lawnmower. Some people feed them certain foods to make them grow faster, but I try to keep his diet balanced. Fast growth is not healthy.

I feed him every other day but what is a balance diet lol... I feed mine carrots, lettuce, cactus, collard greens n cucumbers... I don't want him growing too fast so I give him about two hand full of food but he begs for more lol

They will always beg for more food, but it's possible that he is still hungry. Use your best judgement. Many years ago I read that it is better to feed a little less than to OVER feed them. However, my "little guy" would tear the house apart if I skipped a day of food. If you over feed them, they can actually grow faster than their shell & then they have trouble breathing. It sounds like you are already giving him a variety, but there are a lot of other foods they can eat too. I hope the lettuce you feed him is not iceberg. No nutrients...just filler. In the summer, get him outside in the yard. Don't treat your lawn & you will have a tortoise buffet in no time. Dandelion, clover and a weed we call Pig Ears (not sure what it actually is) are common in my area. There are also websites that sell seeds for Sulcata food. I planted a garden for him and it grew really well, but only for one season. You have to replant every year. Some local grocery stores carry organic dandelion too. He really likes that. My guy likes chicory/endive too (found in grocery store). This helps clean out their digestive system if they get constipated, so don't feed him too much of this or you will have a mess. I hope your little one is doing well. Keep them warm.
