Bunny Hops | MTB Skills: Practice Like a Pro #23
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 13. 02. 2021
- In this episode, Simon helps @linnearooke get on the right track for Bunny Hops! It's a very unique skill in mountain biking that requires the rider to actually push the bike around a bit by pulling up on the handlebars, and also pushing them forward to complete the arc.

ABOUT SIMON LAWTON
Following his own Pro Downhill mountain bike racing career, Simon Lawton (Owner and Founder) has spent the last 25 years analyzing the top riders in the world to understand the tiniest details that contribute to their greatest successes, and also any weaknesses that are holding them back. With an exceptional understanding of kinesiology, Simon has developed his own teaching curriculum that explains the incredible relationship between human and machine. He has trained top pro mountain bike racers across the world, and his foundational techniques apply equally to beginner riders. His on-bike drills allow you to break down complex skills on the bike and develop correct techniques.

ABOUT LINNEA ROOKE
Linnea has been racing locally in the pro category, but until this year she had almost no formal training and was held back by major gaps in her technique. While she was able to carry speed well on straight downhills and high-bermed turns, she lacked foundational cornering skills and was timid in the air. In Feb 2020, she met up with Fluidride to help with a filming trip in Baja, and was fascinated by Simon's teaching methods. Wanting to be part of this mission, she left her career in healthcare in July 2020 to officially join the Fluidride team as COO. We started filming this series to document her journey of cleaning up bad habits, adding new skills to her toolkit, and chasing her dream of riding with style.

I've struck gold coming across this channel.
Thank You! We are happy you found us! -Simon
100% agree.
Despite being very comfortable bunny hopping on a BMX bike (and up to 36" last time I could really try, when I didn't have wrist injuries), a long 29er is a different animal, so I went out practicing yesterday using some things in here, and improved a bunch!
He mentioned filming yourself, which I second. I did and saw I was shifting my weight much farther back (like for a manual) than I thought I was.
The other thing I realized is that with the length and height of a mountain bike, it's almost like you have to wait half a second after pulling the front up to push forward, or else you have a low quick hop instead of a higher, more leisurely one, so also give that a try; it's more like pull-pull-pull-then-push rather than just a quick pull-push.
I truly love how many different approaches there are to this technique, literally everyone who can hop has something different and new to share. Great addition to the collective of killer hopping videos!
My favorite channel on CZcams. Simon , your the easiest guy to listen too on all of CZcams. Not just MTB. One thing , that high speed hop looked more English than American,
13 minutes well invested. Thanks Simon (and Linnea)! :)
I hope I age healthy as this man
His final jump... daym..đđđđ
New to the channel over in the UK, watched the manual video, went and practiced and made the most progress that I have in years, the tip on pulling shoulder blades together and down really helped. Really keen to get out and practice bunny hops after this video.
Great video working with Linnea on hopping technique. Thanks for creating this. Legit hop at the end too Simon!
Load, pull, push. Iâve just taught a fellow fifty+ rider by using this as a spoken mantra. She liked how speaking it out loud at normal talking speed helped her lock on & time doing the three driving elements, she wasnât worrying about peripheral things. Finally sheâs feeling confident to go on one of our local flowing blue/red downhill trails where thereâs a need to either bunny hop a dozen water-bars (fun) or crawl over them at slow speed (a drag). Result; thank youđ.
I've been trying to do the bunny hop, but I've been stuck at not been able to lift the back wheel. I think this new combo of steps load, pull and push may actually help. Can't wait to try it.
Literally subbed for the bronco!
We'll be searching for the bronco again! Must have it -Linnea
This is the first video I've seen on this channel and my first reaction before the camera focused on Simon's face was like "Damn this young dude has a deep voice for his age and ripped arms for a mountain biker". I totally like the idea that you don't need to perform a complete manual for the bunny hop. Great video and channel btw!
Excellent tutorial, looks like lovely place to practice too. đ
Very good tutorial! Thank you!
Brilliant practical tips to improve technique, thanks đđ
Subscribed - for the bronco!!!
Oh my gosh the Bronco. Hoping to see it again. -Linnea
Learnt this as a teenager riding Footups. So much fun now in 50s.
I learn something every video. Really great teaching style!
Thank you very much! Glad you're enjoying and learning! - Coach Kagen
Best bunny hop explanation video
Simon got some veins pumping in his arms. Wtf 0:28 ! ;-) Great video, as always. Thanks!
Hah yes he is super fit!! And makes this stuff look easy
I love the bronco. nice video thanks.
Another great video, great to meet you at Duthie last week!
The best explained you are the best teacher respect to your teachings and yes shes a dam good rider as well đ
Ngl the "pressure under the handlebar" helped me a ton, thanks!
Man, Lee McCormack and Alex Bogusky put out the best bunny hop tutorial last week...but this might be even better! mtb coach wars! đ great job as always guys super helpful
Thanks. Those guys are awesome coaches, so I really appreciate the kind words. -Simon
this tutorial is more of the classic american bunny hop and it can go really really high.
Lee puts out a video that gets the job done to hop small things (and easy to learn), but according to him if you want to do big hops, its basically back to this technique
When did Cobra Kai start riding MTB? Kidding- love this channel. Great chemistry and clear instruction!!
instant LIKE for intro!!!!
đ really helping!!!
Whoa!.. nice jump out there..
Hey man you HAVE the best videos for tutorial ever! I mean this is so well explained
Thanks for the awesome feedback - we appreciate it!
Great video! Thanks for the insight.
Baja... I figured it had to be someplace in Mexico. Nice!
Thanks for watching, Rex!
i really appreciate the smaller digestable chunks of video here in CZcams, i really appreciate your Website fluidride, its really great stuff, but i often fall asleep watching those videos on the site :D.
Cool how you explained it , i still use the hop all the time on the trails but i rear wheel hop too , just depends on the obstacle
great episode guys , loved it
Thanks so much for watching, Davee! -Linnea
Awesome guys..hehe
Cheers Linnea, I am happy to see that you have apparently no issues with the aftermath of your accident.
All the best to you
Thanks for all your support! Wheelies / manuals / bunny hops were definitely the last motion to feel good, but now it's like it never happened. đ -Linnea
NEW SUB! NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN THIS TRICKS! THANKS!
Thanks for joining the party!
Learn a lot watching those tricks..i rang the bell and connect..
Great channel! đŹđ§
Thanks for watching! đ„ł
Watching from Qatar! Very clear explanation.
Wow this is so cool! We're honored to have you watching from Qatar -Linnea
we need another more in depth video on this. Especially focusing on centered body position and how to lift the wheel with the arms, and the third part about shoving the bike forward. And how this approach contrats with the manual approach where movement of lower body moves farther back for a manual initiation
The way they are hopping in this video is how I naturally do it. I felt like I was wrong because other videos emphasized shifting your weight way back into position for a manual.
You guys are good instructors!
We appreciate you watching! -Linnea
Nice video. ÂĄViva MĂ©xico!
Thank you Fernando! We're looking forward to being back in Mexico for a few months this winter! :)
-Kagen, Fluidride Coach
Damn good tutorial and that Send was đđ
You are a very good instructor!
Thank You! -Simon
you're an amazing instructor
Thanks so much!! -Simon
This was the first time that I've bridged the gap between Manual lift and proper Bunny hop lift. My mind couldn't figure out how to shoot back, and then up somehow. Can't wait to try this out.
That's awesome!!! Can't wait to hear about it! đ€đŒ - Coach Kagen
First off dude gives me hope that not only can you ride for a long time, but you can also continue to shred into our later year's. Secondly I need a woman like Linnea! Beautiful and obsessed with Mountain Biking.
Super interesting as always. As you probably know, you are proposing a different technique with less steps in it from the 'normal' pre-manual to explosive stand and tuck/scoop back with feet. Looking forward to trying this to see if it gets me higher by pulling up on the bars instead of trying to raise the front with the manual technique first
Surprisingly I've never watched any tutorials online or taken any classes on coaching technique. I prefer to just relay to riders what it feels like to me to ride after years of wanting to be the best rider I can. I actually started coaching before anyone I know of (1996) so there were no classes to take or CZcams videos to watch. I do the same with yoga and other things I teach. Teaching is easier for me without any memorization of how to do things, or even without knowing how others teach it. Teaching is very personal and internal for me, even though I do share it with a lot of folks. I am often asked about manuals and hops, which you might have noticed I addressed in the video. Thanks for continuing to watch Oliver!
I mean, this is a late answer, so you probably know it already. "Pre-manual" gets you higher. Since you can pull up the front wheel higher.
Wow awesome I doing Bunny Hops great video đđđ
Damn that distant hop!! đłđł
Its good to see Rachel Green learning the hops!
Iv always done it way differently. The half manual way.. I must try this method đ
Let us know how it goes!
Nice video and riding :)
In the old bmx days..70's & 80s we called the modern day bunny hop a Bronco..because it resembled a bucking bronco. The bunny hop was the English bunny hop of today. Made it a lot easier to distinguish the too.
two
I love that name. Does really fit it well. Good stuff.
Those bikes đźđ€€đ€€đ
Good tutorial đ„
Thanks Nekad Channel đ„ Glad you liked it!
-Kagen, Fluidride Coach
Linnea I love you!
Looks like Simon has the new Evil Offering.
He does! And I got to ride one for a bit... dreamy. -Linnea
Man there are so many opinions on this topic. I like this approach the best
Her bike looks so dialed. The suspension looks literally perfect. đ€ Makes me so excited for my bike that Iâm getting in about a month, as when I tried it the suspension felt much better than the bike I have now.
On a hardtail?
@@yengsabio5315 Nope, on a 2016 stumpjumper. Worked well but started to break down lately.
Riding bmx in the 80's we actually called this hop a "bronco".
And bunnyhop was Getting both wheels off the ground at the same time
Subscribed for the bronco.
Do it for the bronco!!! We're glad to have you Daniel :) - Coach Kagen
Nice informative video...I need to go back to practice bunny hops...I managed about 12â two years ago but now Iâm having hard time clearing 6â for some reason đ€·đ»ââïž
Oh wow 12" is a lot! Is this on the same bike? Good luck with your practicing! -Linnea
@@Fluidride yup specialized Fuse hard tail
Wow, I never heard it that way. Load-pull-push.
I'm going to have to break down and take some lessons this spring.
Great videos and instruction.
You should check your links in the description, for some reason they're not working for me.
Thank you for telling us! Hopefully they're fixed now... can't quite understand why they work in some places and not others đ€Ł. We'd love to have you join for in-person lessons! -Linnea
Nice so nice I subbed
Thanks so much for watching! -Linnea
I am going to get back to do some bunnyhops. I was trying them a year ago but failed, will try with your method.
Would love to see one video like this for endos, especially around a switchback.
Just bunny hop every sidewalk around the neighborhood, it took me months, but thats how i mastered the bunny hop, it is my favorite trick tbh.
@@ChuyR. I tried months but I can't wheelie nor bunnyhop.
@@v1d300 ok, this video should work for you, good luck my friend
If you want to learn how to turn on the front wheel for a switchback, we teach that on our website at www.fluidrideonline.com. It's free for 2 weeks so you could see that at on charge. That is the most advanced way to do REALLY tight switchbacks, but is not the fastest in most instances. Linnea and I demonstrated proper switchback form earlier in this series which you can find on this page. hope that helps! -Simon
Thanks for an awesome tutorial!đ„
Quick question, is bunny hops possible or harder to do on a hardtail?? Compared to full suspension?
"OOOOOOOHHH YEAHHH!" - Kool Aid Man đ

This guy is mixture between Mr. Bean, Rob Halford and the voice of the guy that sings Chocolate Rain.
Great tips! Probably the best I've seen. Is this place in SoCal?
Thanks! This is Todos Santos, BCS in Mexico. -Simon
Tight
Sent!
So is the under grip to forward arc like a reverse rowing motion?
question on initial move: it looks like you are initiating the sequence by compressing, then shoving the bars forward ever so slightly before the leg extension. Is this accurate?
Finally someone explains how to lift the bars after the pre-load.
Nice video thank you!
Thanks for watching, Bill! -Linnea
Very informative video. What are those gloves you're using?
I'm wearing TLD Air gloves . -Simon
this is gold. best instructions on youtube.
TODOS SANTOS BAJA MEXICO đČđœ MTB
Iâve been riding bikes for 40 years and never learned to bunny hop. Just took up mountain biking and decided I should learn. After watching only this video I was hopping the next time out on my bike!!!
Thanks
Tips on learning this on a fat bike?
where in Mexico is this? that Huck at the end was epic!!!
Todos Santos, BCS. (An hour north of Cabo). Yeah, I was pretty nervous to send that last one! Glad it worked out - whew!! -Simon
Are you hitting itđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ€Łđ
Can you do that with a dry bike?
Iâve been a fan since the 90s. Where in Mexico did you film this? Come visit us in MC....
Ah so cool! Thank you for your long-time support of Fluidride! This was filmed in Todos Santos đ„ł
nice! wich part of Mexico are you guys?
In Todos Santos! Wonderful town, about an hour north of Cabo
Where are you filming this and thanks for the tips!!
This is in Todos Santos, Mexico!

Bienvenidos a MĂ©xico!
Gracias!

MTBs were designed to climb mountains and yet you have to push the bike up a little hill :), BTW great video, I just turned 61 and I'm still trying to learn new tricks.
Sometimes it's all about conserving energy, especially filming all day in the sun. :) Glad you're liking the videos and you're never too old to learn new tricks, awesome to see you still riding Stephen!

Hi is mastering bunnyhop will help on jumping or it's a different thing thanks!!
It helps!
Similar but not the same. Iâm better at bunny hops than jumps.
Very different. With hopping, there is no jump to do the work for us. Jumping should be MUCH less physical. We have a bunch of tutorials on jumping, so be sure to check those out!
Great video!!..., it looks that you are in a Mexican Town..., where was you film this video???
Thats' correct, good eye Efren! We were in Todos Santos, Baja, Mexico, where we have guided tours in the winter time! You can check the tour out here: fluidride.com/baja-mexico - Coach Kagen

How I wish that I can do bunny hop also dude.
Oh man, you should've made Linnea practice hopping over the "bs" at 2:15! Another great video nonetheless..you guys really make such a good team. Excellent coaching and a grade A student..well, aside from the sex on wheels distraction đ
OH such a missed opportunity! đ€Ł. Manny you need to be our new director! -Linnea
