  • A one-on-one conversation with Sayoc Kali Martial Artist, Master Harley.
Master Harley Elmore reflects on his upbringing in a challenging environment, his realization of the importance of combat skills for personal safety, and the profound impact of iconic martial arts pop culture figures like Bruce Lee on his life.
This series provides a rare and exclusive glimpse into the world of the Sayoc tribe. Normally shrouded in secrecy and spread only through word of mouth, the Sayoc masters seldom grant interviews or public demonstrations. However, The Ready Room has been granted this very rare opportunity to sit down for an interview and get some hands on demonstrations, guided by Harley Elmore, a prominent leader within the tribe.

An amazing martial artist, instructor and a nice guy. In my short time in Sayoc , I am glad I had the chance to attend a seminar of his and it was one the best I ever attended.

I miss Sayoc training. The other Kali systems are great, but they don't have the same tribal/family feel to them. I visit my old class whenever I travel to the East coast.

Thank you for doing this. It's nice to see Sayoc coming to the surface a little bit. Incredible system and strong tribe of amazing people. I fell on financial hardships so I wasn't able to stay in the system but I will forever keep training the 10+ years of knowledge I have. It's all I know. It's all about mindset and that will never leave me. Forever grateful to the Sayoc tribe. Rest In Power Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc.

As a knife maker I love learning the history of the blade martial arts. A knife is one of the oldest and most useful tools humans have.

Kali was really blade-based because everyday Filipinos in rural areas carried long blades everyday. That is how we grew up. fo work. Farmers normally carried "panabas" and "gulok" everyday. For social occasions, the "balisong" was normally carried in the Tagalog regions. Blades were normal. Sticks/cudgels were not.

Fantastic video! I've trained with Guro Harley Elmore back in the day here in Denver! I'm also a full instructor under both Guro Dan Inosanto and Sifu Paul Vunak as well, and still very active in Uncle Vus company these days. Being a prior bouncer, security head, LEO, and now currently a LEO DTAC/firearms instructor... I 100 percent teach these methods and ideologies to this day. Its the Kali mindset and the JKD (Insosanto/vunak lineages) that saved my ass so many times out there!

As you mentioned, the old tools/weapons have not become less effective with age but instead we have become lazy and believe there is some new magical talisman or Way that doesn't require practice, skill or the proper mindset.

Thank you for putting together such a great interview stories from the old days and the development of the arts are fascinating to hear from someone like Master Harley.
Respectfully the music is so distracting, particularly over the top of such an organic conversation. Please consider removing it 🙏, Kind regards.

Do you have any recommendations for how you would approach resettling in a new area without the ability to tap into your network? I'm sure you could write a book on it. The various circumstances that could lead up to it, various circumstances that could have a substantial impact on your approach and how you might approach a long-haul? If that isn't up your alley, could you bring on a guest or recommend someone?

It's mandatory in some PH high schools to learn Arnis in PE class. We did it back in 1997 during freshman year. I'm not sure if they abolished it since society is getting softer and softer now. 😂.

The hands-on demos are nothing more than very short and incomplete video clips overlayed with normal interview conversation. Interesting to some degree for general history, but not revealing much with actual examples with specific instruction.
