Will Jimmy Haslam really ask the city's residents to pay for half of a new Cleveland Browns Stadium?

  • The Brook Park Browns may become a reality in the near future.
    Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and his group bought 176 acres of land in Brook Park by Hopkins Airport, which could be a leverage play against the city to help with funding.
    The Haslam's are rich. Really rich. Is it fair to ask the city's residents to front half the bill for a new stadium?
    Last week, the Haslams bought 176 acres of land in Brook Park out by the airport, so the question is will they use that land to build a new stadium for the Cleveland Browns and move them to the suburbs? Are the Cleveland tax payers willing to put up some of the money for a new stadium downtown or will the Haslams have to do it on their own outside the city limits?

      I don’t live in Cleveland anymore, but I still have a home there. I spend most of my time in Atlanta. The Georgia Dome and now the Mercedes Benz Stadium host so many major concerts and events outside of Football and has energized surrounding businesses due to the constant traffic in the area. The City should only split the cost if it’s a roofed stadium, because the City will benefit from it throughout the entire year. It’s time for the region to enter the 21st Century economy, and stop the blue-collar nonsense. That’s not how modern economies work anymore.

    • @rpippen3455
      @rpippen3455 Před 3 měsíci

      @@VigilantHawk I understand your point, but there is an indoor roofed venue. Rocket Mortgage Field house (Cavs) seats approx. 20,000 fans. Most concerts are not going to be Taylor Swift or Beyonce, so there is plenty room for most events and concerts. They just have to utilize the available resources.

    • @VigilantHawk
      @VigilantHawk Před 3 měsíci

      @@rpippen3455 They’re plenty of other artists that generate crowds of that size. And what I know about those type of events is that people from the surrounding states who cannot get those concerts will travel to see those type of Artists. So you all of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, possibly areas of Ontario as well. That’s hotel stays, restaurant and local businesses patronage, rock and roll hall of fame visitors, etc. Not being able to accommodate those type of crowds makes negatively reflects on the cities global image. It’s a cute City that’s not ready to compete with the big boys.

    • @rpippen3455
      @rpippen3455 Před 3 měsíci

      @@VigilantHawk Well, the stadium can still accommodate Concerts,etc , with excessive crowds during the summer. Billy Joel and Rod Stewart's Concert will be at the Stadium this September. In addition, Cleveland has accommodated very large events, NBA All-Star weekends, Political conventions, tournaments, etc. as they currently continue to expand those accommodations today. But, it does not appear that is the number one goal for the Haslams or the community. If the billionaire wants to pay for this, then fine. But. this is not an urgent need for the people of Cleveland, whereas the city has more important and urgent needs .

    Not one single comment about what a new stadium WITH A ROOF (key detail) would do for the Cleveland economy. You have to spend money to make money. All the crosshairs are pointed at Jimmy & Dee. Why not point them at political leadership in Cleveland? How are we one of the most impoverished cities in the country? What have they done to improve the city even the slightest bit? Crime is way up, but we're focused on Haslem because he's the "big bad rich guy". The city f'd up in the first place by hastily rushing the current Browns stadium. However it needs to be done, get me a new stadium WITH A ROOF, and then we'll talk in 10, 20, 30 years when we've seen the benefit of year-round income because of that stadium. The discussion I just watched was a roundtable of one-sided "talking points".

      Finally someone who isn't economically illiterate that gets it. People act like only 1 guy will benefit from this is the same stupid way of thinking that has cleveland poor in the first place. Last years superbowl brought in a economic impact of over 1.1 billion dollars to the host city. Thats 1 event over the stadiums life. How much tax payer money will the city make off that stadium ? Nobody is talking about that just the immediate cost right now . That stadium will pay for itself in no time and will benefit EVERYONE. Not just Jimmy Haslam. Football stadiums aren't cost efficient for cities even domes. 8 games. Only a couple musicians do stadium tours (plus the sound is terrible). You might get a Wrestlemania every dozen years or so. You will never get a Super Bowl. Same reason Minnesota hasn't in 30 years despite having a dome.
    Meanwhile the Gateway stadiums are going to last 50 years and get great ROI because the teams are well run, they get 5-10x more home games, allstar games, actually host playoff games, and are the perfect size for 99% of large touring musical acts.

    Cities should not be on the hook for commercial investments by private individuals regardless of how many local residents would be hired or how much business would be attracted. The city of Cleveland and or Brookpark could put it to a taxpayer referendum. If the Haslams are impatient with this process, they could assume complete responsibility and risk for this property development. “Caveat emptor”

    • @Firebird1968
      @Firebird1968 Před 3 měsíci

      Then cities shouldn't collect any taxes on any of the revenue. The last host city got 1.1 billion in economic impact to host the superbowl. Everyone wins with a dome the economic impact over 30 years will be massive. If you want the tax money to go towards schools, police , etc then that's on your politicians for them not to squander it, not Jimmy Haslam. Everyone should help pay for the stadium because its impact on the community will be felt by everyone not just Jimmy Haslam.

      The government be it federal, state and or local has the legal right to tax revenue whether it be income, property and or assets. Just because a new stadium will have economic impact on a community, does not justify everyone paying for it through taxes. If you don’t support that, then don’t vote for elected officials who do. That’s the way a republic governs. Though we have democratic values, we are a constitutional republic. We vote for individuals to represent us.

    It is dumb saying that billionaires don’t pay taxes. They might have lower tax percentages due to not having ordinary income, but they paid plenty. It is about total revenue not tax rates. Tax cut might lower tax rates, but most of the time it will increase tax revenue. However It is difficult to find optimal spot for rate and revenue. I hope browns move to suburbs, since Cleveland is full of people think rich people owe them. People are being richer than you don’t stop you from being rich.
