Hello. For some reason, I'm not even sure why but I am becoming addicted to these lanterns. I got a collection of them now and I swear it just snuck up on me. I even like the ones made in China. And that says allot...
I had no idea of different burning styles (hot, cold, dead etc. ) and just now learning how to take them apart. I know things become collectable and what you say about them rusting out and being tossed makes good sense. But I get the strangest notion there is something deeper about them, something more significant.
I'm not a gloom and doom type, but almost want to say that they may have significant future value as in shtf or some survival imperative.
They are soo well thought out too, that it brings to mind the acronym kiss (keep it simple stupid). I don't imagine civilization will decline to the point of where we could not produce our own oil and wicks (animal fat and fur). So basically these lamps have the possibility of functioning for the entire span of human existence.
There is some sort of spiritual sentiment about them too. I guess I am being a kook, but I just get this sense of importance about them.
Maybe man's best friends should be redefined, as the dog and the lamp. The dog with it's great senses protecting our families from the intruders and the lamp to shine light of the darkness they hide in.
Imagine a time before the acquisition of fire. Huddling in darkness, surrounded by predators, the futility of stabbing into empty darkness at creatures a hundred times more equipped for survival than us. Fire must have surely been humanities first blessing.
It's that good ol primordial fascination. I wonder if in secret every human who ever stares at a fire truly sees the depth of it's blessing upon man. "Let there be light" is just too deep.

I enjoyed your comment "it just snuck up on me". That's the same way I feel. I had a V&O out in my garage for years. I used it camping many moons ago. Got it going again after a power outage. Did some research on the history of it and started seeing all of these other lanterns that were out there and who was collecting them. Well that was 2 years and a hundred lanterns ago. I have hot & cold blast, dead flame, wagon and miners lanterns now.🤯

I’ve found that WD 40 works wonders too. It helps to lubricate and protect the lamp.

Cool! I wondered what the best way too drop the cold blast chimney was. I figured you had to disconnect the springs. I usually just spray some WD or PB up there too keep them from rusting, as mine live outside 24/7/365. Thanks!

Hi Doug. I'm not a collector, but bought an old Dietz Little Wizard on EBay to use. The burner doesn't look like any of your's and I'm trying to figure out how to get it off so I can put in a new wick. It's not rusted, but has two tiny wings holding it in place. The latest date I can find on it is 1918. Any thoughts?? Thanks!

Hi, an older video I know, but I have a comment. I would defend your right to do whatever you want to your lanterns, but why oh why would you use JB Weld instead of soldering? I use to be apprehensive about soldering, but it is easy and for about $20 you can get the equipment you need. It's not difficult and it makes for a much more original looking restore job.
