  • The spiritual sequel to Super Meat Boy is much more than just an improvement. The End is Nigh is a brilliantly-designed title that makes completing a game fun for everyone.
We also discuss evaluation-focused design, player-established completion metrics, and some other fun game design stuff.
tl;dr: I love this game and you should too :)

    Points of disclosure...
-I'm playing this game on a MacBook Pro, and it doesn't always handle games particularly well. Any frame skips which may appear in this video aren't representative of how the game will run on your computer.
-A few clips in this video may appear slightly discolored. This is due to a recording error and is not representative of the product itself.
I'm expecting to get this question, so here's my answer...
Q: Hey Matt, why do you use the words "execution" and "evaluation" when you could just use words like "skill" and "strategy"?
A: My first draft of this script actually used those terms, but I chose to find better words which (hopefully) made the argument easier to digest. I'd argue that evaluation is a sort of skill and that the terms "skill" and "execution" don't exactly refer to the same ideas. Hopefully this explains why I used these terms.

I found this video under a Steam review of "The End is Nigh".
As a Game Design student who is working on a 2D-Platformer right now this is highly informative!

Kerdon91 Wait someone plugged this video on Steam? I’m thrilled, thanks for letting me know!
More importantly, thank you for watching and subscribing! Hope you enjoy what I make next. And good luck with your platformer, be sure to tell me when it’s out and playable!

Your video was pinned under a negative review on steam: steamcommunity.com/id/EVA-Pilot/recommended/583470/
Thanks, for your good wishes, but the platformer is only a first approach to work with Unreal Blueprints and to dive into 2D Level Design. It will never leave whiteboxing, nor be published. It will be fun to build nethertheless!
Can't wait for your next video!

6 years old, still peak essay. The only thing I wished you would have touched more on was the symbolism behind the game, and what motivated it's creation, but I guess that just inspires me to do my own video about this amazing game regardless, so thanks actually.

I like how the game is so frustrating it makes you grind your teeth and tear up in anger and sometimes defeat, but after so many attempts you finally reach your goal and you get a euphoric feeling. This game is absolutely brilliant! So rewarding!

Super Meat Boy used to be my favourite platformer of all time, but, after completing The End is Nigh, I realize that the latter surpasses it in every way. Your incredible essay is an awesome explanation of why exactly I felt this way. Great job, man. You earned a new subscriber and a member of notification squad.
PS: Also props for drawing such imaginative parallels with music. As a pianist with a 10 year skill, I always appreciate some love towards the nerdy terminology and timeless pieces.

MML's Commentaries It’s just that I’m feeling really passionate towards the emerging trend of video essays on CZcams. Most of the creators in that niche are really underappreciated, so I want to do my best to support them.
The essays could be on whatever topics the authors find interesting, which makes them incredibly well thought out, extremely educational and very fun to watch. The reason I subscribed to you is because I think that’s what you aim to do as well.
      If you are interested, here are some other creators with (in a way) similar content to this video that are really cool, too: Karsten Runquist, Haedox (especially with his latest video on Odyssey), SomecallmeJohnny, Videogamedunkey (he has his own format, but I think you’ll notice some parallels. especially with dunkviews), Vox (!!!), Colossal is Crazy, Nerdwriter1, Entertain The Elk, Austinmcconneell, Downward Thrust, Lessons from the Screenplay, Every Frame a Painting;
      Enjoy!

    • @MMLCommentaries
      @MMLCommentaries  Před 6 lety +2

timrtabor123 Odyssey’s definitely the best of the sandbox-y Mario games but it has a lot of problems. I made a video on my second channel with some of my thoughts: m.czcams.com/video/8O0T9Tc5-Dk/video.html
It mainly comes down to a few things:
-The rewards you get don’t always match the effort required, which sort of bugged me.
-Some of the locations are a bit too cryptic in my opinion.
-Amiibo are stupid and shouldn’t exist.
-The reward for 100% completion isn’t at all worth.
-Some capture targets control like garbage

Good video but I’m gonna be honest
The lives system ruined this game for me, which I was absolutely loving up until then, I get what you mean with “evaluation difficulty” but in reality, it doesn’t always work that way, frequently I’d die in a place I’d done 10 times before
Making me replay the level doesn’t make the game harder, it just makes it frustrating
And I think it’s the fact that it decided to spring this idea on me so late, it feels like a dirty trick, like if they went with the original concept then fine, but this to me feels like something I didn’t sign up for yknow?
As someone who’s favorite genre tends to be puzzle games, evaluation to me REQUIRES experimentation, which works great early on but, during the future that’s gone
Even if I get literally 400 tumors, it still takes away what makes a game like meat boy or the first half of TEIN so good, it’s hard, but not punishing or frustrating
To me punishing is making me do something I’ve done already successfully again for no reason
It’s sad because I really WAS enjoying this game and at the time planned to do everything and get all the tumors after finishing but, to me the sheer concept of having lives outside of say a retro cart breaks it
I understand where completion comes in but I never think it’s worth rewarding completion by taking away something that feels so fundamental to the game yknow?
Great video though, keep making shit

TheIncredibleSonia It’s a super tiny detail but in the internet age where people can look shit up so easily and spoil themselves anything less subtle probably wouldn’t have worked as well. That may have been one of the most fun times I’ve had with a game in a long time, and I didn’t even own the game at that point!
