- Welcome to part 2 of the new total beginners course to FreeCAD 0.20. In this lesson we will teach you a basic part design workflow and go through the fundamentals of using the sketcher to create sketches that are fully constrained. We will then use these sketches to pad and pocket the model to create our object. We will then learn how to export this out in STL format for 3D Printing or loading into another application such as blender.
In this course we teach the fundamentals of freeCAD using the basics but delivering via teaching you different workflows.
In one lesson you may be learning how to sketch and build a model but will also be following a workflow that will take through the part design workbench all the way to exporting it out in STL format. In another lesson you may be learning how to model in the part workbench to see the differences between it and the part workbench but you will be following a workflow that will allow you to create 2D plans of your model to laser / paper cut.
We aim to teach you freeCAD in a practical way.

Thank goodness someone can explain FreeCAD so clearly. Your time and effort are very much appreciated. Thank you.
Thank you so much. It was my mission to set out and make a comprehensive set up tutorials. What I didn't realises is how supportive the community would be. I have so much more to share. Thank you for the kind comments.
@@MangoJellySolutions dude for real this is great
A new-user tip for the "Select" tool: If you create the box from left to right, you'll only select the items that completely fit inside your selection box. But if you go right-to-left, you'll select every item that touches/intersects with the selection box. (This is common in CAD software, and FreeCAD is no exception).
Definitely THE BEST tutorial. He speaks loud, slow and clear. He tells you EVERY single movement he makes. I'm going to be busy watching these tutorials for a while after I get through them!!!!
Thank you for your kind words.
@@MangoJellySolutions , You earned it. I really appreciate the tutorial and am learning so much!
Loud, slow, clear etc. Absolutely and it is slightly unusual for an expert to recognise that beginners need these attributes.
Super helpful. I was getting very frustrated with FreeCAD and trying to manage all the bodies, pads, and sketches I was creating and trying to merge through boolean operations and this tutorial was exactly what I needed: clearly explained and demonstrated. Perfect!
Thank you so much for the donation and kind feedback. Glad the video has helped get you off the ground and running.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I made my FIRST 3D PART I could have NEVER done this with YOU!!! keep up the AMAZING work!!!
Well done :) Welcome to the journey and thank you so much for the kind words :)
very good. I have used many CAD systems dating from the 80s till now (CADAM, ProEngineer, Solidworks, SurfaceCAM, MasterCAM, etc). It has been about 15 years since I've done any CAD work at all and boy have things progressed! What FreeCAD offers for free used to cost $60K a license in the 90s. I'm getting back into it because my wife bought me a 3D printer :) . However, I didn't find FreeCad all that intuitive to use because of the jumping back and forth between "workbenches". Your videos are extremely helpful.
Nice to see your coming back to CAD, I know what it feels like coming back to 3D after a long break, have been through the same myself. The workbenches can be very confusing but once you have got used to them then they come second nature. I personally customize them in my day-to-day use but use the defaults for the videos. Tools can be moved from one workbench to another so I have a number of commonly used tools that I use the most on my toolbar. Glad your enjoying the videos.
Best FreeCAD tutorial on CZcams, +1 subscriber
Its been a while since I did Freecad, so I had to refresh my understanding. Thanks to Mango Jelly, I can do that. Really great beginning videos. Really like how he showed exporting to stl file two different ways. Helps me with my 3d printing. Just got a Prusa 4**, and love it.
Thank you for the kind words so happy the videos are helping. Enjoy your new toy :)
Mango. thank you sir. your ability to simplify the processes so much makes it so easy for idiots like me. i struggled so much with understanding constraints and design and you have helped. you sir are a legend. thank you.
You are most welcome and thank you for the kind words. It's only easy when you know how. Glad to hear your progressing.
As an "old man" getting back into modeling, these videos have become essential for me to grasp the power of FreeCad. A well done instruction and makes it easy to follow. I like the examples of the many "underlying" tools and methods that FreeCad has to help simplify in creating things from Sketcher to Part Design. Thank you!!
So happy that people like yourself have benefited from these videos, thank you for feeding back. Really appreciated.
I'm not even finished the video but already (as a newbie) I can say what a fantastic tutorial this is. While I pause the vid and let the info sink in, it's time to say "thanks" in these comments. Well done.
Thank you for the kind comments and great to hear your enjoying, welcome to the journey
Keep up the great work. You are truly an asset to the FreeCAD community.
I appreciate that! Thank you
These tutorials are great!
As a machinist I'll say one thing though: Only apply fillets and chamfers to the model if they're functional or cosmetic. If you only want sharp edges broken by, say, a 0.2mm chamfer, just call it out in the drawing :) Some CAM programs deal best with deburring on sharp model edges.
Glad you enjoyed. And thank you for adding your knowledge from your experience. It all helps with enriching the content.
Also, adding chamfers or fillets to a CAD model all over just uses computing power 👍. As a time served draughtsman, , who started out on drawing board with Rotring pencils and pens, design it and draw it as if you were making it on a manual bridgeport, a Colchester lathe, and a surface grinder. I have seen too many uni grad designers causing too many unneeded probs for toolmakers. 😂
Thanks for making this, it was helpful! One constructive criticism, as a first-time FreeCAD user I found the parts where you would do the same thing multiple ways, going back and forth, doing something and then undoing it, to be hard to follow. For my personal learning style, I would prefer just following along a single forward-moving path, once I have become comfortable with one way to do it, then I am more able to absorb multiple ways... I am not able to easily absorb a lot of info without having a context to place it in.
Thank you, all constructive criticism I take on board. You may enjoy the CAD thinking pilot episode which is taught a little differently from the other episodes and is split up into more manageable and direct tasks.
Thank you so much, I took a 3d cad class twenty-plus years ago, but we learned Microstation. I received a new laptop and 3d printer from my wife for my birthday and started playing around with FreeCAD, but I was lost until I found your channel, you are a natural teacher, and I feel I will now get the most out of my printer by watching all of your tutorials. Thanks again.
That's is great to hear. Thank you so much for such a kind comment.
I've avoided CAD for years and this tutorial has completely changed my mind. This would've took some work making this hard surface shape in software packages like Maya and Blender. And with exact measurements? forget about it. It would be a nightmare. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world.
So pleased this has helped with your possible adoption of CAD. The first steps are always the hardest. Thank you so much for the comment.
Great video and very clear narration, spoken at the right speed. I got caught out following this a few times with the precise steps that must be followed for External Geometry to apply to the top surface as the default is the bottom surface. Only until I realised the surface has to be selected first before starting a new sketch, so the sketch then applies only to that surface. Making a new save after every step saved a lot of time, when things stopped working, which they constantly do.
Mango, you are a legend! Thank you for doing these videos. Just the consideration of communicating basic mouse commands is very helpful. Thank you mate!
Glad you enjoying and thank you for the feedback
You rock dude. I figured I was going to hate switching from mesh modeling to CAD since the programs look a bit dry but I'm really liking how clean the work flow is. Thank you!
Love your tutorials! You make it so easy to follow along, thank you.
Thank you, great to hear
Thank you for this great step-by-step tutorial! You make freecad look like it actually makes real sense! Think I've found a turning point in my struggles with freecad from here, while there are still many things to get grasp of, but this helped incredibly much after some very frustration filled attempts in the past.
This tutorial has helped me gather some essential concepts of the basic workflow and how to benefit from advanced CAD functionality compared to Tinkercad, which is more like an old school 3D-modeling software with just a tad more CAD bias. I master Tinkercad fairly well, but it's always so restricted.
Thank you. This video, along with the part 1 video, has been a great help. The model view "Hierarchy" had me stumped for a few other tutorial videos out there, but I now understand it shows a liner progression of the 2D object. Will watch Part 3 after printing the model. Cheers. (Followed along with version 0.21.1)
I had to run this three times having got rather lost. I found it was due to missing a mouse click or clicking off the workpiece. However it was worth the effort and it cemented some of the methods in my mind. You explain it very comprehensively and clearly. Many thanks.
Thanks so much for this information, I am a total NOOB with CAD and after watching this video I managed to print this exact model. Cant wait to finish the rest of your tutorials.
It was worth taking the time to revisit the basics of Freecad, THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I have been using Freecad for more than a year now, but I have just discovered that I was multiplying the constraints and other actions in an almost abusive way.
Glad your liking the beginner freecad series. Always found that going back to the basics you always pick up something new. Thank you for all your support.
Very professional Just watched for a quick refresh but picked up a coupe of useful tips again too!
Just started using 3d applications this month for 3d printing purposes, I'm so happy I found your tutorials, it will save me so much time learning. thank you so much.
Just wanted to say thanks for this tutorial! I took a technical drawing class probably around 20+ years ago (where we also used some CAD software) and I thought I'd never use that stuff ever again. I am really thinking about getting a 3D printer, and I wanted to use FOSS software all the way to model something, ultimately to see and prove to myself if I can do this. Lots of people said FreeCAD is a pain (they also said that about Blender a long time ago if I recall), but just after even watching up to this tutorial, I feel like I understand what you're showing us and I can see the potential control and power it gives! Really amazing tutorial! And really appreciate how you communicate everything!
I'm only on Lesson 2, which has already enabled me to create a simple part of my design and 3D print it. Using the principles shown here. This course is addictive, and I intend to watch (and 'like') them all. Thanks man.
Glad your enjoying them :)
I love your unique style of making tutorials, where you anticipate a natural reaction of an intelligent learner. He would often have a "second track" running in his mind, asking if this is the only way to do it, or what if he did it in a different way, or why he should be doing this step at all, etc.
Most people make tutorial with a linear narration, where a model is created without any trouble.
But when the learner tries it himself, even with a small variation, he gets stuck.
But in your way of teaching, many of the _"what if-"_ scenarios are covered, so the learner becomes more confident in trying out different things, and yet he is able to predict what will happen.
Even the *Comments* section is full of learning, where many learners have raised pertinent doubts and you have provided solutions.
That's what makes it my favorite channel!
Please keep up the good work! 👍
Thank you so much for the kind feedback, it's always great to hear how people are finding these tutorials. My pet hate is to go through a tutorial and not be aware of some of the possible things that can go wrong and how to correct or work around them. Believe it or not there is no script, well, for the larger builds or an idea for something I want to teach I tend to do a step by step quick run through as a series of written steps with screenshots but very very high level (I release these for certain levels of patreonage on patreon) all the rest is freestyle with a little thought ahead as I will add 'mistakes' which I will show how to fix. Even if a mistake is made I don't edit it out as these are valuable to understand how to correct. Really glad that people like yourself are appreciating these videos. Thanks once again.
@@MangoJellySolutions Extempore style suits you well: You are always in the flow, and never fumble for words or dawdle. 👌
Very rarely have I observed actions that were not needed. Such "spurious" moves can throw off even a thinking learner, because he would be looking for deeper meaning for that unintended action!
This is my first CAD experience, I cant believe that I created hinge-like part in FreeCAD right now. Thank You so much!
Great job! It's a great first start to your journey :)
Best Cad tutor ever..
He can explain this to a 5 year old child and he'll grasp easily 🎉
Thank you
Thank you so much 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Well Done, thanks for the share. The External Body reveal is a great help. I was creating multiple parts, some as tools to use in Boolean operations. The External Body plus Void is clean.
truly amazing tutorial. excellence at its finest.... much appreciated
This video really thought me all basics to get started with freecad, thank you so much!!
This is incredible content. Thank you for taking the time to create.
Thank you it's been a pleasure 😊
First time user of FreeCAD but you made it simple to follow. I look forward to your next video.
You have the best Freecad videos! Thanks for all the excellent guidance. I still end up with a mess of bodies, copies, Part vs Part Design dysfunction, and a quasi parametric chaos in my models. Designing 'organically', modifying and changing things as I go, it gets frustrating trying to backtrack. I preferred when Freecad didn't have the body/Part declaration requirements..
Fantastic tutorial! I just finished watching this second part, and (just because I wanted to) I then printed out the model. Good learning experience and will be watching the rest of this series. Thanks for taking the time to create these videos, really appreciate it!
Thanks for the feedback, so glad you enjoyed it. 3d printing your end model just gives you that extra bit of satisfaction I find. Thanks once again
Very helpful instruction. I was proficient with AutoCAD decades ago, and I've done a lot of isometric drafting, but am now learning about resolving geometrical constraints among other things - I presume this is a more "grown up" way of doing 3-D modelling - at first it seemed a bit confusing/restrictive, but now I'm starting to see the logic of it.
Thank you for all the time/effort you put into producing these videos. And by the way, I appreciate your narrative style with good English enunciation that is easily understandable to my ears. (I'm in Kansas, USA.)
Thank you, I really appreciate the feedback. I created these videos for one of the reasons you have described. Like yourself I used CAD before and made the move to freecad and realised how hard it was especially with very little to guide at the time so decided that I would make these tutorials and try to find a middle ground between complete beginner and "enough knowledge to be dangerous" lol. So please that these videos are helping people like yourself.
Well presented and excellent delivery for beginners, with just the right amount of technical terms.
Because of you I’m learning how to use this software without feeling overwhelmed. Much appreciated!Thank you 🙏🏽
Great to hear, thanks for the kind words and feedback. Glad it's easing the journey
THANK YOU MY BROTHER FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY AND ANOTHER FAMILY!!!
Fantastic tutorial Sir, thank you very much!
You're very welcome!
Best FreeCad tutorial to date. Thank you!
These tutorials are great. By the second video I already understand how to create basic parts that I can print. So amazing!
Great to hear 😊😊😊
Thank you. You're tutorial style is just right for me. I was very proficient with Autocad 2000 but never made the transition to parametric modeling. I am proficient with LibreCad/Qcad. I look forward to completing the rest of your tutorials. Your accent is pleasant and understandable for my ears that are accustomed to the Southern US.
Thank you so much for your kind comments, it's great to hear your history with cad and finding these videos useful in you journey. Your not the first to comment on my accident, thank you, it's my tool for teaching and I have been working on delivery so it's great to hear that what I am doing is working 😊
You are a fantastic teacher. Thank You for taking the time to teach freecad. For those having issues with the final two fillets, reduce the size of the top fillets from the instructed 24mm to something around 15mm, then re-create your last fillets
Thank you very much, glad they are helpful :)
Before this tutorial, and after using blender I initially thought of freecad as rather confusing, but...
After I've seen your tutorial all actually makes a lot of sense - thank you !
You're very welcome!
Thanks for this tutorial, very informative and clear! :)
You're very welcome! 😊
Great teaching style, thank you very much for this tutorial series.
Thank you very much, I'm enjoying your work on FreeCAD!
Best tutorial I've come a crossed! Thank you, Sir.
Best tutorial on freecad
Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this series. You are a saint. I'm 67 and have suffered with ADHD all my life. It's taken me three days to get through this video but I've done it and I'm really excited for the rest of the course. I've been in tech all my life and I've always learned by experience. You are one of the few teachers that I've encountered where my brain can settle long enough to take in the information. Absolutely brilliant presentation. Once again thank you so much.
Thank you for such a kind comment. I am so glad that this has helped you with your journey. I am so glad that the teaching style that I have developed over these years have helped people like yourself. Having certain neurodiversity conditions myself I set out to make tutorials that are inclusive to this nature of learning. I applaud people who comment and are open about there conditions no matter how old they are :)
Once again my appreciation for such a comprehensive tutorial looking forward to time permitting to continue with the rest of your tutorials in version FreeCad 0.20. Top Man
Great to hear 😁. Glad your liking them and thank you
i'm excited for 1.0 version of freecad and this tutorial will be my foundation learning freecad.
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly with the previous comments, the best tutorial on the tube! As a field Engineer training operators of highly technical machines not everyone is on the same level of absorption. I found that explaining the step of each process builds a foundation that simplifies the understanding of why each step has it's importance. People always want to take shortcuts! Of course that is what you did but it was as tutorial went along with the build. I feel I would have been bit easier if it was stated how each step was explained in progression first and why the it has to be that way, also showing each icon. Very good tutorial, just my thoughts!
Thank you for your kind words and for your thoughts. I always take these on board to enhance future videos. Without comments like these I wouldn't be able to continuously improve.
ty so much ! i try to switch from f 360 to freecad and watched since 3 dayes some videos of ppl who explain this cad programm but no one explained how to make a sketch on an existing sketch so i cant make models...you did that what the others cant .... truely a great teacher !
Thank you so much, I do try to cover everything trying not to leave stones unturned. If I do I come back and add more to the collection. I glad your finding these videos useful and thank you for the kind words.
Brilliant tutorial, thank you! First time using FreeCAD and I followed it without a problem. 👍
Great to hear, thank you for the comment and sharing your progress. 👍👍
Spot on teaching!!! Thanks so much.
Great video. A super quality tutorial with very clear English audio. This was so easy to follow along. I´m so grateful for all your effort and this enormous contribution to the community. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for such a kind comment. It's been a honour and still is. The community has been so supportive.
this tutorial was awesome!!!!!!!
Glad you think so :) :)
Thank you! I've never used CAD software in my life but these tutorials are helping!
Before these tutorials I was only able to make a rectangle with an image of a bean mapped to it lol
Great to hear they are helping you. 😊👍
From what I have seen of this software so far, and with the help of these excellent tutorials, I reckon you might actually be lucky this is your first CAD package 😂 👍.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge 🙏❤
Always a pleasure :)
I just cannot say how thankful I am for your incredible generosity... I am moving along slowly and not sure I understand everything being done, like, when we were creating the first vertical piece, mine kept putting the rectangle underneath until I realized if i clicked on "body" then it was on top - just a newbie error :)
I also noticed some interface differences (I did go through the first video). I am using Version: 0.21.2.33771 (Git)..
And lastly, I found in my version, sometimes the icons didn't work and the menu option for the same action did work.. and other times both ways worked - strange ..but, nothing that is related to your incredible work!
Thank you so much again
Nice video, I'm a noob at this type of CAD software, and its been a game changer to get use to the controls and how to do things
Great to hear and welcome to the journey 😁
I'm switching Fusion 360 to FreeCad, so your lessons are very good and detailed for me to do it fast :) very well made content. Thanks.
Great to hear, thank you for the feedback and kind comment
Great video! Thank you!
You are welcome!
Great Job......Thank You
Merci beaucoup; the frustration is diminishing; and the enthusiasm has increased greatly. Maybe it isn't so hard...
Great to hear your getting past that barrier. I experienced exactly the same in my early days worth freecad.
awesome i made this part within 3 minutes after watching this tutorial. great job. need watch another parts
That's fantastic news 😊😊😊😊
An excellent introduction 👍. I have tried Freecad before but gave up in fustration. Tried other vids, but they seem to skip the really basic stuff. As a pro user of Solidworks for over a decade I want to learn an alternate package, and your simple clear instruction helped me overcome my set in stone muscle memory 👍
Really pleased that you are finding these videos useful. Like yourself I have come from other CAD packages and it was one of the reasons for building this course as I know what the learning curves is like and going on that journey without a guide for me was not a peasant ride. Thank you for the feedback and welcome to the channel.
Thank you so much. This is well explained, easy to follow, and assimilate, this is the best free cad Tutorial I've watched so far.
You're very welcome and thank your for sharing that. Much appreciated 😊
This is helpful for a beginner like me. Thank you
Wow thanks for a great video 😀 Now Im getting forward on my drawings
Awesome series! I really appreciate the pacing of the videos! Keep up the great work!
Great to hear, thank you.
You are so amazing in your teaching style! I LOVE IT! I learned so much more even if I've already learned FreeCAD in other tutorials. Yours is totally amazing! When I create videos for my LINUX tutorials, I will teach the way you do! You have inspired me so much!
Thank you for such kind comments 😊😊😊😊
Great video! Helping me a lot. This is the best Free Cad tutorial ever! Hope you can keeping doing this series!
Thank you for the kind words, really great to see your enjoying. I have lots of plans and ideas going forward so even if this series ends there will always be these kind of tutorials for beginners relate to a subject/project being released regularly. An example of this is the cad thinking mini series I tested the waters with. Concentrating on a concept / subject area over of a small number of videos. Whilst building something practical. In other words, no it's not going away lol. I try to mix up beginner and intermediate tutorials to keep everyone happy 😁
I'm new to FreeCAD, so this series is helping me a lot. I've had some experience with SolidEdge, so it feels very much like home in terms of general look, layout and work environment, but the user interface will take some figuring out and getting used to. Can't wait to get into Surfaces, that's always been my favorite in SE. Keep up the great work!
Welcome to the journey :) It's great to hear that you are enjoying this videos and finding likenesses across the two.
@@MangoJellySolutions Having fun indeed. I went ahead with extrusions through profiles, because I need those for a hobby project of mine - but otherwise I'm going through the tutorials in order. The one thing I'm struggling with is placing sketches on inclined planes. Planes parallel to the XYZ planes I've figured out, just modifying the coordinate parameter. The biggest difference so far is that in SE you tend to do a lot of things via clicking and dragging, and here it's more about menus and ticking items in lists.
Great video!!! I learned a lot, thanks. Freecad is much more different then Blender or Sketchup.
Thank you for this comprehensive video. I watched it and managed to create my own detail for 3d printing.
Fantastic! Glad you enjoyed and great to hear you have started on your journey.
Excellent tutorial. Thanks
You are welcome!
Thank you for this awesome tutorial on FreeCAD!
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed
I started to use FreeCAD from 0.18 up to 0.19 now. I still have lot of messy to understand FC systematically. Your video (part 1 and part 2) is a MUST WATCH VIDEO for anyone like me who wants to self-learning FC deeply from beginning again. This video is the first one I watched with proper demonstration speed in detail and clear sound. Not only demonstration but also with step-by-step explanation of what you are doing and what will be happen next. I like this video very much. I am areadly subsribed the channel and will keep on following. Very expecting part 3 comming.
Thatch you for the kind feedback it's great to hear how people are finding following these videos. FC has such a learning curve and looks like I'm getting the right balance. Thank you so much. I hope you continue to find the series useful.
Hey Man, I like your style. It took me a while to complete tutorial #2 and it was just the way I learn. Thank you very much for putting this on CZcams..
Thank you, glad you enjoyed. Best to take your time rather than miss important steps. 😊
Thanks. Now I can begin designing my own starship.
I used to use autodesk inventor and fusion360 but in case I couldn't get a free license in the future, I plan to learn freecad. Your video is very well produced and explained. Great work and thank you, Sir.
Thank you for your kind feedback. Sorry to hear that the software that you invested all your time in to learning is no longer available. It's one of the reasons why I started this channel. Welcome to the journey.
Man this was thorough and really well done. I struggled at times because my impatient brain kept trying to guess ahead, but when I think about it, you really didn't have any redundant explanations in there.
Many thanks 🙏
Thanks for the comment and feedback, really appreciate that. I know what you mean about wanting to jump ahead, CAD is hard and it takes time and when I was learning (still am) I wanted to do the same.
@@MangoJellySolutions it's been over 20 years since I last dabbled with 3D graphics, modelling etc. CAD is so totally different though. Both easier and more difficult, depending on what you're trying to do.
I never thought I'd be trying to learn CAD at this stage so I can 3D print an adapter for my vacuum 😅
Another one down, thank-you, EXCELLENT TUTOR 🌞
Glad your enjoying 😊
Awesome tutorial! Very easy to follow.
Amazing job. Made CAD so accessible!
Great to hear! Thank you 😊
You're a phenomenal teacher Mr Mango. Excellent work👍
Ah thanks 😊😊😊😊😊
I love to listen the words by words, without any annoying back-sound ...
Super video. Thanks.
Very useful tutorial, thank you so much
great tuto, thanks!
enjoying learning this course, thank you!
Great to hear 😁👍
Precicely what I was looking for. Excellent presenteation.
Great to hear! Thank you
Thank you so much for time.
Thank You. Great explamation and thank you for the work 😀
Thank you for the kind comment 😁👍
