I’m a liberal. But I can clearly see that they barely covered Trump when he was exiting the stage. His head was still completely visible. My dad and I were shocked at how badly they handled it. Can’t stand the guy but would not want anyone to harm him.

The press needs to adhere to some kind of standard (like they used to 20 years ago) instead of sensationalizing everything. Their job is to report and let the viewers decide, not tell the viewers what they think it means. Is there any screening before publishing anymore? This didn't happen overnight, it began with the perfect Republican candidate in 1980, Ronald Reagan, a grade B movie actor, who could read a script, find his mark and follow directions. Reagan eagerly signed legislation doing away with the fairness doctrine which said that if you were going to broadcast a statement as fact (without any demonstrable evidence) on any media operating under the FCC rules, then you, by law, had to provide an equal amount of airtime in the same time slot for an opposition response. If the law had still been in effect when election fraud and a conspiracy by the "deep state" was being spread on the right wing channels, they would have to provide equal time to the opposition. The same would be true for the left wing channels in providing the right wing opposition equal time to respond to left comments. It was less than 3 years after the dissolution of the fairness doctrine, that Rush Limbaugh began the right wing lies, unanswered on the talk radio format...and that is called propaganda. This continued unchecked by the fairness doctrine and lead to the division we have today. IMO, if the fairness doctrine had remained in place we would have a much better informed electorate today. Also, IMO if Reagan (an actor and puppet of the oil companies) had not removed the Solar Panels from the White House (that Carter, a nuclear engineer, had installed) ,instead leaving them in place and supporting the development of renewable sources of energy, we would be 100% sustainable energy self sufficient, and without the effects, and costs, that a fossil fuel based energy system has on the environment.

As I understand it, they use 3 tiers of security: A Secret Service "body detail"
( those who stay close to the protectee ) ; A perimeter detail ( rangers & snipers) and a local law enforcement detail to cover areas just outside the perimeter. It appears that somebody dropped the ball in that hierarchy.

A LEO who claimed to have taken part in several such political events explained how the security zones are manned by SS and local law enforcement. The SS does tier 1 and tier 2 security and local law is assigned to tier 3. He said that the building where the shooter was was in the tier 3 zone and that they should have had personnel around those other buildings. Based on his experience he said that the locals screwed the pooch.
The crowd saw the “bad guy” *minutes* before the secret service acted. IMO they let this happen.

The building was 150 yards from the stage with a perfect line of site. that is not outside the perimeter.
The Atlantic is being a little hyperbolic. I think this was a security failure and 100% preventable. There's a 150 ft tall water tower just a few meters off the line between the podium and the shooter's position. Why was the secret service's sniper at one of the lowest points on the field? This was a failure in creative ideation. You have to think like the bad guy. Caveat, practically all my experience is military and old. So I may be missing something.
Someone reported to Polices, Secret Services that someone was on the roof at least half an hour before the incident occurred but nothing was done. There was something fishy.

What still baffles me about this is the part where someone in the crowd was shot and killed yet the crowd doesn't seem to react behind Trump like someone was injured. No one runs and everyone gets up and then reacts to Trump's response. The report is 1 killed and two injured; I wonder where these victims were in the crowd?
It's very normal for people in a situation like this to not understand what's going on at the time. Most people don't have a lot of experience with this sort of thing, they often don't even know it was a gun (they often think it was fireworks), and maybe the person was just ducking? Hard to tell in the heat of the moment.
