    FAQ:
Q: Weren't the new caves added in 1.18, not 1.17?
A: Yeah, ima be honest, I kinda fumbled on that one, instead of "Best of 1.17 and 1.18", it was more like "Best of Caves" and "Best of Cliffs". The snapshots in between the two updates made it hard to determine which addition belonged to which update.
Q: What factors are being considered to choose the best "thing"?
A: Depends honestly, some of them are chosen because they have a lot of relevance in speedrunning/beating the game, others are just iconic features that make Minecraft what it is, and some of them are just because "I like it". There's really no ranking here, it's just that out of the features added in each of these updates, I think that these are the ones that stand out to me in a good way

Hi Omicron! I noticed that you really seemed to hate 1.15, but imo, it was a neccesary update because of the PERFORMANCE issues. 1.13 is infamous of being laggy on low-end devices without Optifine, and not only did 1.15 fix that, it also fixed several bugs, like the Alt+F4 dupe. This is something that only a little part of the community knows about, and I hope you change your view on The Buzzy Bees update.

Tbh, there are only few choices that I would pick differently.
First would be Parrots. If we have to keep ourself to one single feature (so no just colour) - Concrete for me is the more significant thing out of that whole update, because of how it makes builds even more unique and personal, without additional wool texture; it expands use for gravel and sand and it's also not as extreme looking as Glazed Terracotta.
I would also consider to maybe pick Scaffolding over Raids, due to its utility. Having a quickly destructable climbable block changes a lot of how the building in Survival looks like, not to mention it's simpler to use than ladders and allows for vertical movement as well. And it also expands use for strings.
Its also hard to not pick one of the new utility blocks as well. Stone-cutter is so good. Barrels, Composers are all super significant additions here. But then again Raids do add immersion to Villages.
For Nether Update - I would just go for Biomes. Making Nether look good and unique was the most impactful thing that makes you want to go back to it. But I can live with Pigstep representing the whole update. Because almost every element of this whole update has been super significant.
For Caves and Cliffs - aside Cave Generation, for me the changes to Ore and Gems generation has been the biggest change. It sounds insignificant - but it made me actually explore the world more to find the places where some ores are more easily to find. Going super high, but also mining extremely low made my gameplay change a lot and it affected how my bases has looked as well, due to how my mines are planned. It's also one of the most beautiful updates we had in the whole game. Mountains and broad unique caves really changed how this game has been looking. It's not a flat game with dirt-blocks and trees. It's extremely vertical game (I know it was always like that, but it feels like it finally - it created the immersion level I needed to see this game as proper representation of real world).
For 1.20 at the moment I am more into Customisation changes (Trims, changes to Netherite and so and so). But also new Ruins looks so fun.

As someone who played since before Minecraft had its name, I can say with assurance that out of everything, the most memorable update for me was the 1.5 hopper. Many survival servers had just basic protection of doors and chests, disallowing certain building radiuses to be destroyed by anyone who wasn't the host. But one KEY feature went so overlooked when the hopper dropped. every single chest that was locked for me, could have a hopper placed under it and drained entirely. I went to every single server I frequented as a kid, and drained EVERYONE of their resources that I could find. All the way till I drained an admin on my main server, while he was online. So many good memories, and being the richest person on one of the biggest servers at the time, was phenomenal.

1.18 Removed high-limit for datapacks and mods and larger high-limit (-64-320... +128), but New Generation is rly great too. BTW they split it bcs is much easier add new things then adjust old things.

The bees polinating crops and the honey blocks functions in contraptions makes it a very good update imo. But outside of the farming benefits the honey block stuff is failry niche but powerful
As a person who builds very aesthetically, can't remember which update. Could have been 1.16, adding having regular chest next to regular chests was a game changer. More compact storage and not having to have a block gap was nice.

I felt so nostalgic watching this video (the soundtrack probably helped a little) I don't play minecraft since its release, but still, I feel that I'm kinda old for seeing so many of these versions in their apex... The oldest I remember is 1.4... but, I kinda miss times like when 1.7.10 was the version everyone would play with mods in and how many mods were there. Watching videos of different perspectives from the same minecraft server from the times of the version 1.5... those were the good times... nowadays I find so little people doing these things and... I feel kinda overwhelmed by what minecraft is today... maybe the reason for that is because I am in fact a bit older, but, I still love this game even with its flaws

I genuinely don't understand why people don't like the 1.9 combat update's Attack Delay. That mechanic is just SO much more interesting than just mindless spamming of left click! The fact that a stone axe does as much damage as a diamond sword doesn't even bother me since the delay is so damn long! Swords STILL have an advantage at the same material level, and shields only make that nuance deeper. I love the combat update, no exceptions

    • @sabenator2770
      @sabenator2770 Před rokem +3

This should give you a general idea of why people love 1.8 combat, if you actually want to understand the other sides point of view.
this is not meant to start an argument, i play 1.19 for all my SMPs, and 1.8.9 for chill fun pvp.
People primarily don't like the attack delay because it made multiplayer pvp gamemodes less fun.
The appeal of 1.8 combat was that it was simple enough that anyone could pick it up quickly, but skilled players could still decimate their opponents. part of the magic was that you could get on with friends of varying skill levels and all have fun. as long as a new player could sprint towards a target and click, they could deal damage and contribute to a team effort, and let the more skilled player take on 2 opponents, with one already weakened. With current combat mechanics, a new player will be unable to deal damage to an opponent that is more skilled, if they simply have a shield. And now the only way for a skilled player to win against 2 players with basic game knowledge is for the skilled player to run away, occasionally trying to surprise their opponents by turning around and landing a single hit, which is needless to say, not very fun to play against. This made 1.8 combat more fun in team minigames, because you could play with anyone who owned the game, and still be competent.
This is why there are few popular 1.9+ minigame servers in java edition (bedrock edition has no hit delay, and has many large popular minigame servers).
Mojang made 1.9 combat for survival worlds, and fighting mobs. and it does that much better than anything else we have seen. And this explains the rise of many large public SMPs (lifesteal). also, both versions have respectable 1v1 pvp servers.
Also, a major difference is the playstyle that each version promotes. 1.8 combat was much faster paced, because if your opponent misses a swing, you only have a fraction of a second until they can attack again, which means you have to constantly be on your toes, never letting your guard down. In contrast, in 1.9 combat, if your oppenent misses a swing, you know you have a 0.625-1 second pause in combat, which makes the combat much slower paced. Also, with the addition of shields, a player can stand still and not take damage, allowing for a much slower playstyle. In 1.8, if you stand still, you WILL die. the combat was just much faster paced.
Additionally, 1.8 combat was not just spam click based. it was very much movement based. a player clicking 2 cps can do the same damage as a player clicking 20, if they have good movement. 1.8 skill was based much more on how you moved, and how you gave knockback. To be successful, you needed to actively strafe and sprint reset, and know when to jump crit safely when they wont hit you, move backwards to dodge their hits, or use a rod/egg/bow to neutralize the opponents momentum and gain the initiative. The timing in 1.8 combat was much more fluid and dynamic over the course of a fight. In contrast, 1.9 combat is much more based on a rigid timing, and watching for gaps in your opponents defense. both require immense amounts of skill to master, but 1.8 combat is much more fluid and fast paced.
Overall, people liked 1.8 combat because it was more fun in a multiplayer minigame scenario, much faster paced, and easy to learn but difficult to master.
And that is why i play newer versions for SMPs, but whenever i want to play with my friends and have fun, i hop on hypixel.
now PERSONALLY i just think it should be a gamerule to toggle between. /gamerule doAttackCooldown (why can't we just have this mojang?!!!)

For someone who doesn't like 1.8 PVP, they would say it's just mindless spam clicking. And for people who don't like the 1.9 combat system, they would just say that it's just slow and boring. But even though I like the 1.9+ combat system more, here is my unbiased POV and I'll list both the PROs and CONs of both.
      1.8 PVP - Pros
      - It's fast paced
      - You can block
      - It's simpler
      1.8 PVP CONs
      - It's less open to casuals
      - If you're not a fast enough clicker then you won't do as well
      - You can't hold items in your other hand
      1.9 PROs
      - Cooldown makes hits more satisfying
      - It makes PVE actually fun
      - You can hold things like food and buckets in your off hand
      1.9 CONs
      - Tipped arrows are stupid
      - Shields can be seen as OP due to them deflecting all damage
(I'll finish this later, I have to reboot my pc)

I would love if they did some more comprehensive archeology e.g. fossile items ranging from single special bones to whole fossiles (like an archeopteryx or sthg.), also with some other method to progress with these and use them (apart from being decoration, which could also be extended with new containers for displaying items etc). That would be awesome

Beacons are great and all but I'm surprised they were chosen over command blocks, which were also introduced in 1.4. Command blocks were revolutionary for mapmaking and huge for the game in general.
Also, for 1.13, arguably a bigger feature for the game overall would be either the new swimming mechanics or bubble columns.
