I grew up in Te Awamutu, where Neil Finn and his fellow musician brother Tim are from. It was a huge deal for us when this song went global and the band had international success. Please keep in mind that this is a small, rural town with only a few thousand people. Folks would come from all over the place to steal the street signs for Teasdale Street, where they grew up, and Brotherhood Road, just because it was fitting given how massively successful Neil and Tim were together in Split Enz, prior to the formation of Crowded House. As a side note, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam is a long-time fan if Split Enz and PJ would occasionally perform covers of their songs at gigs. He has become a friend of the Finns over the years and performed with them both a few times. Neil's son, Liam, has also worked with Eddie.

There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
    While you're traveling with me
    Hey now, hey now
    Don't dream it's over
    Hey now, hey now
    When the world comes in
    They come, they come
To build a wall between us
    We know they won't win
Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page
    Hey now, hey now
    Don't dream it's over
    Hey now, hey now
    When the world comes in
    They come, they come
To build a wall between us
    We know they won't win
Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and release
    Hey now, hey now
    Don't dream it's over
    Hey now, hey now
    When the world comes in
    They come, they come
To build a wall between us
    We know they won't win
Don't let them win (hey now, hey now, hey now, hey now)
    Hey now, hey now
Don't let them win (they come, they come)

    R.I.P. Paul Hester.
Hessie was one of the funniest, most charismatic drummers of all time. He was the quintessential sad clown. A hilarious, gregarious presence on stage and off; but burdened by a lot of darkness in his personal life. Unfortunately that darkness eventually won out and he took his own life.

    Yeah, 1986
I was a Sophomore in HS. Sweet 16 (almost 17)
Like I've said...Mom let me drive home from grocery shopping and I heard this song and lost it. That's how my folks knew I was sincere about something, couldn't hide the tears when something touches me.
I ran inside and called the radio station in Knoxville (which back then was a toll call cause it was long distance! and you had to pay extra even though it was 50 miles away).
Oh man...what a magic time. Wished kids today knew that kind of time.
We wore our best clothes to school. Took pride in our appearance. But we weren't patsys...we had walk outs and "stand ins". We even started the whole "meet at the flag pole" for morning prayer because they 80s started kicking in that whole church/state stuff.

A few friends and I were waiting for the teachers and thought would go watch tv to kill time. We ended up watching MTV all day, eating food and drinking soda , whilst everyone else was in the snow outside on the slopes.... totally missed our first skiing lesson and got yelled at by teachers on the trip with us lol. Well worth it though, as discovered this band and few more too that day. Really good times.

"Don't Dream it's Over" came out late in 1986 and was one of the finest pop songs of the decade. Crowded House was spearheaded by Neil and Tim Finn and was formed after the split of their earlier band Split Enz. They followed this hit up with "Something So Strong," but were unable to keep their momentum going. Neil Finn has been very busy in the past year; he joined supergroup Fleetwood Mac and has spent the majority of 2019 touring with the band.

Crowded House once gave a free concert in a small square amongst office buildings in Manukau City, Auckland back in the early 90's. My mate heard the announcement on the radio so we raced there figuring it was a joke, but a few people had begun to gather and there was a stage set up. We got sat on a transformer box just meters from the stage. Sure enough, out they came and played a blinder of a concert. So many people squeezed into such a small area, but what an experience. Probably wouldn't be allowed to do such a thing these days.

This song reminds me so much of the time it came out. I had just graduated high school. That big transition. The city I grew up in is small town. So, it was a big change coming up. Everyone going their separate ways, out to find our next adventure. U don’t hear from ppl that you knew for most of your life. But, how did we know that there would a social media, a Facebook, Twitter, etc that would give us the ability to reconnect with our dear friends. This song will always be my playlist & sometimes on repeat.

Now this song was one of my favorites!! Listen to that sound...I miss the 80s and 90s music..it reminds me of being young and I'm still with my good friends...some have left us way to young...I know they're listening every time I hear it...miss them up there in Heaven!! Great reaction video...❤

What I read about was Tim Finn was living in a shared house and others in the house wouldn't leave him alone to write his songs so he wanted to build a wall between them. The song also has other ramifications about what was going on at the time many years ago.

Ercilia Hannah I The video made a lot more sense to the NZ audience as it sort of showed glimpses of life in NZ in the 70’s, especially the style of the houses and the gaudy decor we all used to have.

One of my all-time favorites. It was during a time when I did A LOT of driving back and forth to gigs.
Another track that's in the same genre, same year is "No Promises" by Icehouse; the studio version is a piece of art.

The Meaning of Don’t Dream It’s Over
Neil discusses the double entendre meaning of Don’t Dream It’s Over. While the song has a blissful melancholy, it encourages us to stand by our dreams and to stand by each other. Too often, to this very day, we are divided by walls or the imaginary concerns of the world.
    A Cutting-Edge Music Video
The music video for Don’t Dream It’s Over was cutting edge at the time. The tour through the house was surreal. And words scrawled across the bottom of the film added new layers of meaning. Not to mention the abstract objects floating through the air and smashing on the screen. The music video captured the inner workings of our distracted minds.

Crowded House was actually my favorite Band of the 90's! I was 14 or 15 when this song was popular! It instantly brought back memories of watching MTV and being so excited when your favorite video came on. I kind of miss those days! This band is from Austrailia and is actually very popular still to this very day due to the fact that in the very early to mid 80's the singer was in another huge Australian band with his brother called Split Enz.

The other, for those who wonder, is Brian Setzer.
