Yeah, that’s really about all you can do with it. I always take it a step further and run ice and water shield under the skylight, then strip it all in sandwiching the skylight completely. Then after I put my base flashing on, I add two more pieces over the sides of that just in case. Overkill I’m sure, but definitely makes it bulletproof. Wouldn’t be too hard just to throw in two hooks and a board to set all your material on and stand on if the roof is that steep. Definitely saves on the scuffs. Also, if your waterline ends up on the edge of the tin, you should be adding a flat stock piece of metal under that waterline. This would mostly pertain to snow and ice back up because the edge of the tin is basically exposed in that waterline. Again probably overkill, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to make the install better.
Good thing you're watching the installers with the instruction booklet in your hand! Like previous post stated, they need the Velux training class to be confident in what they're doing. The Ice and water shield needs to be tight up to the gasket flap and tucked underneath and follow down to the tight corner so the aluminum flashing doesn't perforate it when installed. Too bad you couldn't do the install before the roof was put on. Yes, those shingles are a P.I.T.A! Thanks for the video!
"Expert" installers wouldn't need a coach like in this video. These skylights and their kits have been out for many years now. Velux have been the best skylight we have used. Good job though.
this video is not for expert installers, more for DIY home owners, and for educational purposes to show home owners what it takes to install skylight right. We have seen few videos where roofers didnt do minimum requirement flashing work when replacing roofs, or justify it as "not important"
I am one for redundancy and this is just bare minimum moisture protection. When you install ice and water (non granulated) under the skylight, the fasteners are sealed helping to prevent any moisture built up under the roofing from following the fasteners and potentially causing damage. I like to see more than what you should ever need for protection, because sometimes life just happens. Usually agree with your install suggestions and I'm not saying this is incorrect, just stating that heavy winds and ice can creep in ways that this stand alone method may fail. Thanks 🙈🙉🙊
If you look, the ice and water is installed on the decking and over the felt. That is verbatim what Velux requires per spec worldwide. If you built up more layers of ice and water, you could run into issues where the cladding won’t fit because what you installed is now so thick. That would cause bigger problems. I trust Velux, but I see where you could be concerned
Crazy, just got off a 395 bundle house with camelot 2's. My crews first time installing them took us 5 days but looks beautiful now that its all said and done. Also, great way to learn how to properly install a Velux skylight is to attend their training. They hold them every year usually the start of the season all my installers have Velux training.
I like how this is promoted to have this one guy teach the way of installing a skylight. Instead he sits back and reads the manual while others do all the work.
Very cool skylights but people or (roofers) need to know the kit velux provides it's good for shingles but alot of times the dont have the right kit for tile roofs, specifically high profile tiles, I came across a few jobs where I HAD TO MODIFY THE flashing around the curve.
If anybody wants to see a couple of pictures from a previous job leave your email. That was an S concrete tile. Velux kit came exactly like im this video but there was no way this kit would have worked.
It’s extra work to go back and flash the skylight if it’s newcon. That way you don’t have to use a rack pattern around a skylight. Too bad it wasn’t deck mounted... much more reliable and changing it in the future is as easy as changing a lid on a jar.
Velux is the best. I prefer to build my own curbs and flashings. This way I change from shingles to metal or flat, raising the skylight as high as I want.. Just using their hood.
Roofing Insights Dimitri, what’s a good address to mail your Russian Medal. I will mail it to you. It’s a word war 2 hat medal. Not worth a lot but very cool. We have had them for like 76 years. I know you are history guy. James
I can't imagine if you weren't standing there giving direction what your installers would have done. You shouldn't have needed to tell them how to install things, let along to take of the red tape. At least in the end these two skylights were done correctly. You need to have everyone trained long before allowing them to do things on their own without direct supervision.
What about the insulation board on the underside of the decking? Does that not void shingle manufacture warranty? This is a genuine question because a manufacturer rep once told me it does
Not impressed guys you should build a curb 2×6 the proper flashing around it after peel and stick call me in tha rain season I'll be glad to fixed for $500 cash
Not impressed with the video. Not impressed with the management style. I’m curious if these installers are his employees? Didn’t really feel on brand for Roofing Insights.
That is definitely going too leak trust me and too tell a good roofer look at his hands if there clean and he is showing the video for a how too do not trust him, also roofing is like pokemon now a days a good roofer works with his crew all day and not films, too be a good roofer you must do it yourself, roofing is like pokemon nowadays, mexican I choose you, white man I choose you! ... disgusting...

Thank God you were there to tell them how to do it right
They work while u talk and u get the credit....what a world
I charged costumer 2600$ for this sky light. Exact same 10/12 pitch. Gave my helper 450$ took us a good full day. Nice work fellas. Stay safe.
"Expert" installers wouldn't need a coach like in this video. These skylights and their kits have been out for many years now. Velux have been the best skylight we have used. Good job though.
I had one of my 5-star installers and a new guy in the video. A little bit of on the site training here

@@roofingtips which guy is 5star installer and which is the new guy ??lol
I like the place you choose to shoot really step roof 👌🤙🤙🤙mostly non-Hispanic roofer choose Walkable roof to made videos to how install skylights
Dont forget to tar shingles back down after breaking the seal great install video

That’s what Brent says, everyone I talked to praise their training.
The training is so straight forward and practical!
They do a great job
Can't wait to ice and snow damning
Good job

I thought he was a VELUX installer. You show the logo and now I see VALUX lol
Now I see it is VELUX and you were just trolling. Lol I noticed 😂
Yep, our videographer googled wrong logo 🤦♂️ good eye

Correct, we had to double up some of the step flashing to keep the lap consistent.
Velux people, hope you are reading this and taking notes form roofers who have been trying to give you this feedback for years...
If anybody wants to see a couple of pictures from a previous job leave your email. That was an S concrete tile. Velux kit came exactly like im this video but there was no way this kit would have worked.

Yes but more ways for water to get in once you start adding pices water will get in. A unified body is key
exactly mebrane under ,on curb and over ,counter flash
Velux is the best. I prefer to build my own curbs and flashings. This way I change from shingles to metal or flat, raising the skylight as high as I want.. Just using their hood.
Agreed. Great practice. Velux is the best and have good program for contractors

RE saddle flashing -you wnat the ice and water shield UNDER the shingle but OVER the underlayment correct ?
I can't imagine if you weren't standing there giving direction what your installers would have done. You shouldn't have needed to tell them how to install things, let along to take of the red tape. At least in the end these two skylights were done correctly. You need to have everyone trained long before allowing them to do things on their own without direct supervision.
You only can imagine you won't be standing on a 10×12 pitch buddy 😂😂😂
Also would screws be better so you don’t damage the window with a hammer?
Ring shank nails are what’s included in the kit. That is what Velux recommends
I think Brent is playing safe and follows instructions
What about the insulation board on the underside of the decking? Does that not void shingle manufacture warranty? This is a genuine question because a manufacturer rep once told me it does
That’s not an insulation board. It’s a radiant barrier. All new homes in this area are being installed with radiant decking.
These are great questions! I didn’t install the roof. But I will be asking my atlas rep about this!
1. Whats the turn key cost you charge a HO for this size and style velux material and labor?
2. What if shingle is disco like chalet or old tamko?
Carefully remove the shingles and dont tear them. Prices vary by area
A mature!!!!
ice shield not high enough under rubber
As usual the guy that says he can install it does not install it till somebody else how to do
Ok 👍🌶️
Gaf grand Sequoia??
Doesn’t look like them
Uno mass!
Yikes so maybe I’m overkill, 3’ of high temp ice and water around the opening, wet set the skylight in geocel, then Wrap with their tape they provide
I wonder how they install them when you’re not on the roof watching them the entire time. 🤔
Not impressed guys you should build a curb 2×6 the proper flashing around it after peel and stick call me in tha rain season I'll be glad to fixed for $500 cash
Nice job but you need to make sure your guys are tied on a safe bro13:20 in all I can see is a guy staring at deaths door.
Hard to huge safety when you don’t see everything
Not impressed with the video. Not impressed with the management style. I’m curious if these installers are his employees? Didn’t really feel on brand for Roofing Insights.
It's going to leak I've seen problems already I fix leaks for a lot of different people and use all make the same
stepflashing should be nailed through the shingle not directly on flashing.
Guy with the purple shirt ..covid19
not thee waay I do it lame
Why dont you try doing it yourself instead of bossing some Mexican around that probably forgot more than you know!
3 tab garbage
I agree 🤣.
I’m not a fan of those shingles at all.
They are imitation grand manor
That is definitely going too leak trust me and too tell a good roofer look at his hands if there clean and he is showing the video for a how too do not trust him, also roofing is like pokemon now a days a good roofer works with his crew all day and not films, too be a good roofer you must do it yourself, roofing is like pokemon nowadays, mexican I choose you, white man I choose you! ... disgusting...
Pokémon’s? What are you 16?
