From i what I got from the cutscenes John gets upset with garf and kicks him out. He regrets the decision and goes to find Garfield. He finds Garfield but accidentally strikes him with his car. I'm assuming this may be Garfields soul or maybe him fused with the car
Someone else said Jon Crashes the Car and it Upset Cryfield.

from the cutscene, jon kicks garfield out and regrets the decision but crashes the car accidentally, it's either garfields soul or he fused with said car, or as someone else said, garfield got upset because of the crash
