Wolfgang Paalen - Leben und Tod

Er war der einzige Österreicher im Kreis der Pariser Surrealisten, ging auf Einladung von Frida Kahlo nach Mexiko und beeinflusste US-Künstler wie Jackson Pollock oder Mark Rothko: Wolfgang Paalen war einer der wichtigsten Impulsgeber der Kunst um die Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts weltweit. Lange Zeit wurde er dennoch wenig beachtet, nun ist ihm im Unteren Belvedere eine umfassende Ausstellung gewidmet.

He was the only Austrian in the circle of Parisian Surrealists, at Frida Kahlo’s invitation he moved to Mexico, and he influenced American artists Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko: Wolfgang Paalen was truly a world-wide trailblazer of art in the mid-twentieth century. Scant attention has been paid to him in recent years, but now the time has come for the Belvedere to dedicate a comprehensive exhibition to his oeuvre.

Clairvoyantly, based on liberal humanism he defended through the twists and turns of the twentieth century, Paalen laid the groundwork for a new humanism: the wholehearted exploration of the edges of our human spectrum of consciousness, the infinite depths of the possible states of mind of our species. Genuinely foreseeing that this will probably remain the only human, when the technocracy of the artificial intelligence will gain the upper hand over our ego, over our free will, over our unconscious desires. This exhibition marks another initial stage in the exploration of this genius with its utopias that are only now becoming actual.
