What a kick ass song----a REAL country song!!! Love its style---hard to describe---Jay Farrar between his writing, his voice he uses like an instrument itself and the skills of those who have played in Son Volt over the years----just top quality music making..

I stand corrected this song is about Times Beach Mo. when the roads were sprayed with Contaminated oil to keep the dust down. Later their was a flood and the water was also contained. They had to evacuate. People were getting cancer. I saw this in a Documentary about about Rt. 66

You're a very lucky man. I've seen Jay and Son Volt but UT was a little before my time. Would've loved to see them live.

Such a great song. Farrar puts it all out there, the song just drips with emotion. The slide guitar is almost haunting. Thanks for the post!

I miss the 90s. I played this album non-stop when it came out. . . for many years. Still so incredible. I saw these guys at Liberty Lunch in Austin and Doug Sahm showed up for the encore to sing Give Back the Key to My Heart. People were freaking out lol. Incredible show.

So I'm not the only one who thinks like this. I stopped buying their more recent albums. It just doesn't compare to the 1st 3 Son Volt albums. Same with Lucinda Williams; she changed her style (she has that right, but I don't have to listen to it).

I've listened to this song dozens if not hundreds of times but strangely enough this vocal performance by Farrar reminds me of Johnny Cash. Not close enough that you'd confuse the two.

Current 20-year anniversary "Trace" tour includes dueling slide-pedal guitars with Gary Hunt and Eric Heywood (who plays slide-pedal at this concert) and it i's like.....amazing for "Ten Second News." Saw them in Dallas one week ago. Timeless....

Tear Stained Song is a great piece. That said the guitars are painfully tuned, if they’re tuned at all.
